Dark Fate by Eve Newton Summary: A Paranormal Reverse Harem

TL;DR: One Queen, Three Knights, Endless Enemies

Isolde Morvoren discovers she is a Sanguimonarch, a unique being who can control blood, life, and death.

Her power surge at SilverGate Academy temporarily resurrects William Harrington, a ghost who becomes one of her three bound protectors.

The others are CJ, a vampire-dragon hybrid prince, and Cassiel, a fallen angel. Together they form her court.

Three threats converge: The Collectors want to perform a ritual on her, Damadere wants her dead, and Headmaster Blackridge reveals he has manipulated events for centuries.

The book ends with Isolde accepting Blackridge’s offer to share guardianship of SilverGate’s magical nexus, leaving her court battling above while she binds herself to an eternal duty.

Dark Fate Summary: The Full Story

Warning: Full spoilers ahead.

The story begins with William Harrington’s perspective. He has been a ghost for one hundred years, murdered and tethered to SilverGate Academy. A magical explosion changes everything.

For thirty seconds, he is alive again, breathing and bleeding. He recognizes the power signature immediately. Isolde Morvoren is a Sanguinarch like him, capable of manipulating life essence through blood.

Isolde awakens underground. Headmaster Blackridge tells her he anticipated the explosion. He pushes her to name what she has become. She creates a new word: Sanguimonarch.

A monarch of blood. Something beyond a Sanguinarch.

Blackridge is satisfied. He returns her to the surface, where her twin brother Isaac waits. She lies to him, deciding to protect him from the truth.

CJ senses the change in her blood. The group discusses what this means.

The Collectors, ancient beings who hunt Sanguinarchs, will want more than Isolde’s power.

They will want to dissect her soul. William theorizes that The Collectors are Sanguinarchs themselves. CJ declares Isolde a queen, and the three men her knights.

Isolde’s hunger becomes insatiable. Regular blood cannot sustain her. She craves power and magical essence. Cassiel offers his fallen angel blood.

William discovers he can absorb her excess power through physical contact. They create a feeding circle, each man offering something unique. Ancient texts later reveal this is how a Sanguinarch’s court forms.

Blackridge summons Isolde to an Evaluation Chamber. He drives seven barbs into her spine at the seven chakra points. The pain is excruciating.

Each barb reveals more of her capabilities: ancient bloodline magic, creative and destructive potential, perception across realms and time. The seventh barb connects her consciousness to the universe itself. Blackridge leaves monitoring runes embedded in her spine.

CJ rescues her from the chamber.

The group researches in the library and discovers that a Sovereign Sanguinarch requires three conditions: ancient bloodline heritage, exposure to a dimensional nexus, and extreme trauma.

The text warns that the Sovereign will gather others of significant power, binding them through blood and desire.

The group plans to remove Blackridge’s runes from Isolde and implant them into William. This could make him permanently corporeal. They travel to a forest blood altar, a circle of seven ancient stones.

CJ performs the extraction and implantation. Each rune is pulled from Isolde’s spine and driven into William’s. When the seventh rune enters, William becomes fully alive.

He kisses Isolde and vanishes to confront Blackridge.

Blackridge reveals that William’s death was anticipated but not orchestrated. The Collectors would have found William eventually. Blackridge kept him as a ghost to save him. He wants William and Isolde as a matched set, powerful enough to destroy The Collectors.

The runes in William’s spine can be deactivated at any moment.

Isolde kills a werewolf student named Benz during Defensive Combat Training. She drains him completely in under thirty seconds. Blackridge tells her she is above reproach, outside conventional rules. This terrifies her more than punishment would.

During training, William teaches Isolde to perceive through blood across distances. She senses seven Collectors approaching from the north.

CJ reveals his secret: he is half-dragon, a prince from another realm. His mother is the Dragon Queen. Cassiel finds forbidden celestial texts revealing that Sanguinarchs descend from fallen angels.

The Blood Crown ritual requires seven supernatural bloods: fallen angel, dragon, vampire, ghost ectoplasm, werewolf, witch, and Sanguinarch. Only Damadere, Isolde’s ancestor, ever completed it successfully. She became neither alive nor dead, losing her morality in the process.

Isolde and William discover a Sanctuary beneath the Bell Tower. It contains carvings about the first Sanguinarchs and the Blood Crown ritual.

Through blood memories, Isolde learns her parents made a deal with Blackridge to protect her from The Collectors. Her great-grandmother failed the Blood Crown ritual in 1897 and became a display piece in The Collectors’ collection. Damadere is coming to kill Isolde to prevent being replaced.

Hunters from CJ’s realm breach SilverGate’s boundaries. The three men kill three Hunters, but more are expected. Threats converge from all directions.

Isolde’s power surges become uncontrollable. She experiences agonizing withdrawal symptoms. William syphons her excess power to stabilize her, but it is temporary.

Isolde submits to Blackridge’s evaluation. He separates her from the others and offers his blood. She resists for hours, but eventually drinks.

His ancient blood carries memories of civilizations rising and falling. Black sigils manifest beneath her skin, connecting her to SilverGate’s magical foundation. She can now see Collector agents disguised as students.

A Crimson Moon appears. The Collectors are attacking. The group forms a plan: CJ will shift into his dragon form to create chaos and draw Blackridge away. Isolde will infiltrate the control chamber beneath his office.

CJ’s transformation is brutal. His bones shatter and reform. He rises fifty feet tall as a dragon. The courtyard erupts into chaos. William transforms into the Butcher of SilverGate, monstrous and terrifying.

Cassiel fights from the air. The Collectors pour through the breached wards.

Isolde descends beneath Blackridge’s office and finds the nexus chamber. Multiple ley lines converge there. She places her hands on the platform and becomes a conduit for the nexus power.

Blackridge appears. He reveals his true nature: he is an eternal being, defender of this realm’s nexus point. He has held SilverGate’s defenses for longer than recorded history.

He deliberately dropped the wards to draw all threats at once. He needs Isolde as his co-guardian, the first true immortal like himself.

He offers her a choice: take his hand and end all threats together, or refuse and watch her court be destroyed. The blood whispers guide her: this is the only way.

Isolde places her hand in Blackridge’s. She accepts her fate as co-guardian of the nexus.

The book ends on this cliffhanger, with the battle raging above and Isolde bound to an eternity she does not yet understand.
