Spoiler Warning: This section reveals major plot points and the ending.
In July 1980, Rue Larsen, her sister Lily, and neighbor Amber Kind enter the woods near Leech Lake. Rue hears a strange voice say, “I’ll get another one prettier than you.” She blacks out and is found hours later with severely burned feet and no memory of what happened.
The other two girls vanish. The case goes cold after a botched investigation. Local police blame a convicted pedophile named Donald Tucker, but he has a solid alibi.
Forty-two years later, BCA Cold Case Agent Evangeline “Van” Reed investigates a disturbing crime scene in Minneapolis. A woman has been buried alive in a shallow grave. Near her body, detectives find a red half-heart friendship necklace. It matches the necklaces worn by the missing girls from 1980.
Van partners with forensic scientist Harry Steinbeck. Autopsy results confirm the victim is Amber Kind. She had been held captive for decades and gave birth at least once. The discovery means Lily Larsen might still be alive.
Van and Harry re-interview Rue, who now lives a guarded life. Under hypnosis, Rue remembers the “Bendy Man.” He seemed to pour out of a tree hollow like water.
Harry connects this description to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a condition causing extreme joint flexibility. Someone with severe EDS could squeeze into impossibly small spaces.
Van makes a costly mistake. She arrests Amber’s father, Dr. Charles Kind, after discovering a lie about his alibi. The arrest backfires when his real alibi is confirmed. Detective David Comstock uses the failure to pressure Van’s supervisor.
With only twenty-four hours left on the case, Van’s team traces a construction worker named Garrick McCormick. He worked near both crime scenes.
His medical history shows joint dislocations and broken bones. He now lives under the alias Jack Davis in rural New Berlin.
Van visits Jack’s elderly mother, Nadya. She mentions her son’s quiet blonde wife wore a half-heart necklace. Van realizes Jack Davis is the Bendy Man. He abducted Amber and Lily, renamed them Iris and Violet, and kept them in his basement for over four decades.
At Jack’s farmhouse, Van fights him after he attacks her with a claw hammer. She knocks him unconscious. Van and Harry rescue Amber’s newborn baby from beneath the floorboards. They then race to a fresh dirt mound and dig up Lily, who is still alive.
In the aftermath, Lily is reunited with Rue and their mother. Comstock confesses his affair with Amber’s mother and his role in covering up the investigation.
Van is cleared of misconduct. Harry drives her home, both keeping secrets but finding trust in each other.
Jess Lourey’s novel spans forty-two years, moving between the 1980 investigation and the present-day forensic breakthrough.
The story is a procedural with dual timelines, alternating between past failures and present urgency.
