Mother Is Watching Summary: A Chilling Tale of Art and Motherhood
TL;DR: When a Painting Watches Back
Tilly Crewson is a conservator in Savannah, pregnant after years of infertility. She receives a painting called The Mother by Charlotte Leclerc, an artist who died in a 1984 fire.
As Tilly cleans the canvas, the painting reveals biological horrors: human nerve tissue in the paint, a heartbeat inside a painted cavity, and a entity that speaks to her.
Meanwhile, Tilly lives under MotherWise, a government program that tracks pregnancies through biometric watches and sub-dermal tattoos.
The painting and the state both want control of her body. Tilly’s late mother, Margot, made a dark pact with the entity inside the painting. That pact now threatens Tilly, her unborn child, and her seven-year-old daughter Clementine.
The novel ends in Paris, where the painting is installed in a collector’s gallery. The entity steps off the canvas. Tilly does not survive.

Mother Is Watching Summary (Spoilers Ahead)
Warning: This section contains spoilers for the entire book, including the ending.
The novel opens in 1984. Charlotte Leclerc, a former surgeon turned painter, sits in her attic studio. She has painted a face using oil mixed with blood, sand, and cockroach wings.
The painted eyes stare back at her. She tries to cover the face with black paint, but the paint slides away. She hears her dead daughter Marigold singing. Charlotte lights a match and drops it onto linseed-soaked rags.
As the fire spreads, the painted subject blinks. Charlotte whispers, “Found you, my darling!” and dies.
Thirty-nine-year-old Tilly Crewson works as a painting conservator at the Georgia Institute for Technology in Savannah.
She lives with her husband Wyatt, their seven-year-old daughter Clementine, Wyatt’s mother Shelby, and a rescue dog named Stanley. Tilly still grieves for her stillborn daughter Poppy, who died at twenty-nine weeks six years earlier. Her own mother, Margot Milton, died twenty years ago after falling down a staircase.
Tilly receives a climate crate from her mentor, Cecil Danby. Inside is a fire-damaged canvas identified as The Mother, the fourth and final painting by Charlotte Leclerc.
Tilly begins restoring it in a secure lab. Soon after, she discovers she is pregnant. Wyatt registers her with MotherWise without her consent.
Strange things happen as Tilly cleans the painting. Thin tendrils emerge from the paint layer. One tendril presses into her pregnant belly. She collapses in the lab. A MotherWise supply box arrives, and when Tilly opens it, hundreds of live cockroaches pour out. They vanish when Shelby enters the room.
Lab analysis reveals the canvas contains human cerebrospinal fluid and a segment of a human median nerve bundle from a child under twelve.

Tilly agrees to receive a sub-dermal fertility tracker tattoo. The tattoo burns. Tilly begins seeing her dead mother, Margot, whose head tilts at a broken angle.
Dr. Rice places Tilly on home rest. The painting is moved to her home studio. Thousands of venomous Southern Flannel Moths burst into Clementine’s bedroom and swarm her face.
Wyatt performs the Heimlich maneuver to save her. That night, Tilly captures a half-dead moth and bites down on it, crushing it between her teeth.
On Christmas morning, Tilly takes kitchen shears and gouges a two-inch square of flesh containing the tracker tattoo out of her own arm. She hands the bloodied scissors to Clementine.
At a restaurant, Tilly sees her mother’s severed head roll across the table and land in front of her dessert. Clementine has night terrors about a woman with a tilted head standing in her room.

Tilly tries to destroy the painting. She opens the window during a storm, gouges the canvas, and burns it with a chemical torch. Each time, the painting heals itself in seconds.
The painted subject comes alive: its mouth breathes cold air, its eyes open, and its painted heart beats inside an hourglass-shaped cavity. Tilly draws her own blood and feeds it to the painting.
During a hurricane, Tilly’s water breaks at thirty-five weeks. Clementine wanders into the studio. The door slams shut.
Tilly crawls inside and finds the painting reaching physical hands out of the canvas, cupping Clementine’s cheeks. Tilly pushes Clementine out and the painting grabs her wrist, snapping the bone.
The entity speaks. It reveals that Charlotte Leclerc lost her five-year-old daughter Marigold to a choking death. Charlotte used human tissue and dark rituals to build a portal through her paintings.
When Margot restored The Child, she made a pact to trade her own daughter, Tilly, for relief from her suffering.
When Margot resisted, Charlotte broke her neck. Now Charlotte has returned to claim Tilly and her unborn baby.
Tilly loses consciousness. Paramedics resuscitate her after her heart stops for two minutes. Doctors perform an emergency C-section and deliver a healthy baby girl.
Clementine names her Marisol. Tilly claims no memory of the studio trauma. The painting is packed and shipped to a private collector.
Months later, Tilly travels to Paris with Marisol to oversee the installation of The Mother in the collector’s gallery. The collector is Claude “Bernie” Bernard, Margot’s former friend and Tilly’s biological father. Tilly insists that The Mother be hung across from The Child.
Claude leaves the room. The figure in The Child begins skipping rope. The smell of pink bubblegum fills the air.
The Mother opens her eyes. Baby Marisol giggles and reaches toward the painting. The gallery door locks. The Mother steps off the canvas onto the floor, leaving wet black footprints.
The entity envelops Tilly, crushing her bones. As Tilly dies, Charlotte’s voice echoes: “Found you, my darling! Here I come…here I come…”
