Hunters of Dune Summary: The Epic Return Of Paul Atreides & The Final Enemy

A Universe on the Brink

Three years after the events of *Chapterhouse: Dune*, the universe Frank Herbert created is fractured.

The old empire is gone, replaced by scattered factions and a looming, unknown threat.

This is the setting for *Hunters of Dune*, the first half of the grand conclusion to the original Dune saga, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson from Frank Herbert’s notes.

This book is for readers who want to see the original *Dune* storylines converge.

It resurrects major characters, expands the lore, and finally reveals the identity of the great enemy from the Scattering.

It is a direct bridge to the final volume, *Sandworms of Dune*.

TL;DR: The Galaxy’s Last Stand Begins

This is a plot-driven space opera focused on two desperate situations.

A no-ship full of refugees uses genetic technology to bring back historical figures like Paul Atreides and Lady Jessica.

They hope these gholas will be their ultimate weapons.

At the same time, a new leader on Chapterhouse fights to unify two rival sisterhoods against a common foe.

The true enemy is finally revealed to be the thinking machines, Omnius and Erasmus, who have returned to finish their war with humanity.

Hunters of Dune Summary: The Hunt and the Hidden Enemy

Warning: Full spoilers for the novel follow.

The no-ship *Ithaca*, captained by Duncan Idaho, has been on the run for three years.

It carries a group of Bene Gesserit refugees, a community of Jews, the last Tleilaxu Master Scytale, and seven small sandworms. They are constantly fleeing an unseen enemy using a tachyon net to track them.

Their only hope for survival is to make blind jumps through space. Facing a critical spice shortage, Scytale makes a deal. He reveals he has a nullentropy capsule containing cells from historical legends.

These include Paul Atreides, his mother Jessica, and his concubine Chani. In exchange for a clone of himself, he gives them these cells. The Bene Gesserit on the ship agree and begin growing these historical figures as gholas, hoping they will provide the strategic genius needed to defeat the coming threat.

On Chapterhouse, Murbella is now Mother Commander. She is ruthlessly merging the Bene Gesserit with the Honored Matres. She creates a new army, the Valkyries, and conquers the planet Buzzell to secure its resources. Using massive doses of spice, she unlocks a shocking secret in her Other Memories.

The Honored Matres were created from Tleilaxu females used as axlotl tanks, explaining their genocidal hatred for the Tleilaxu.

Her investigation leads her to launch a massive assault on the Tleilaxu homeworld of Bandalong. After a fierce battle, she kills the Matre Superior, Hellica. However, the body transforms, revealing Hellica was a Face Dancer imposter.

Elsewhere, the shape-shifting Face Dancers are orchestrating their own plan.

On the Tleilaxu planet, they enslave a researcher named Uxtal to grow a ghola of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. They also recover a dagger with Paul Atreides’s preserved blood, using it to create a rival Paul ghola named Paolo. They intend to use these figures as their own controlled weapons.

The Face Dancers also lay a trap for the *Ithaca*. They lure the ship to a seemingly peaceful planet inhabited by the Handlers. It is a ruse.

The Handlers are actually Face Dancers, and they attack the landing party. During the battle, the young Miles Teg ghola uses his superhuman speed to save the group. The *Ithaca* barely escapes the trap, fleeing back into foldspace.

After this escape, the true nature of the enemy is finally revealed.

The mysterious hunters, Daniel and Marty, are actually the robot Erasmus and the computer evermind Omnius.

They survived the ancient Butlerian Jihad and have been rebuilding their Synchronized Empire for millennia. Having failed to capture the *Ithaca*, they launch their colossal armada.

The final war for human survival, Kralizec, has begun.

The Gathering Storm

The novel opens with the *Ithaca* lost in an uncharted universe. A young ghola of Miles Teg reviews records of his past life. Duncan Idaho is haunted by his addiction to Murbella.

On Chapterhouse, Murbella struggles to unite her forces. She is faced with the immediate problem of fighting a war while her own people are divided. Meanwhile, Scytale, a prisoner on the *Ithaca*, offers the key to their survival in the form of historical cells.

Shadows of the Scattering

On the Tleilaxu homeworld, the Face Dancers kill and replace the ruling Elders. They force Uxtal to create a new ghola of Baron Harkonnen. This is part of their larger plan to control the universe from the shadows. Aboard the *Ithaca*, Duncan makes a desperate jump to escape the enemy’s net.

The situation is dire, and the ship’s resources are dwindling. The crew also discovers the Futars, beast-men with a primal hatred for the Honored Matres.

Resurrecting the Legends

The refugees on the *Ithaca* begin the ghola program. A wild Reverend Mother named Rebecca volunteers to become an axlotl tank, sacrificing her body.

The first ghola decanted is Paul Atreides. On Caladan, the Face Dancers find a dagger with Paul’s blood. They see it as an opportunity to create their own version of the Kwisatz Haderach.

Murbella, meanwhile, crushes a desertion camp to enforce unity in her new Sisterhood. She knows that without absolute discipline, humanity will fall.

The Soostone Conquest and the Crèche Crisis

A schism erupts on the *Ithaca*. A conservative faction led by Garimi attempts to kill the baby Leto II ghola, fearing the return of the Tyrant. The attempt fails, and Sheeana forces Garimi to become the gholas’ guardian.

This turns her punishment into a responsibility.

At the same time, Murbella conquers the planet Buzzell. This victory secures the valuable soostone harvest and provides resources for her war effort.

Splinters of Memory and Hidden Daggers

The Tleilaxu researcher Uxtal clones a Tleilaxu Master named Waff eight times. He brutally tortures the clones to restore their memories, hoping to learn the secret of spice production.

One Waff survives and escapes with a Spacing Guild Navigator. On the *Ithaca*, the young Paul ghola takes a dangerous amount of spice.

He experiences a vision of his own death, not of his past life. Duncan Idaho finally breaks his bond to Murbella through an intimate act with Sheeana, freeing his mind for the battles ahead.

The Infiltration and the Final Typhoon

The *Ithaca* lands on a forest planet. It appears to be a peaceful world inhabited by the Handlers. Thufir Hawat discovers the truth: the Handlers are Face Dancers.

A desperate battle ensues. The Futar named Hrrm sacrifices his life to protect Sheeana. Miles Teg uses his superhuman speed to save the rest of the group.

The *Ithaca* escapes only by making a random jump. On Tleilax, Murbella’s forces win their battle.

She kills Hellica, who is revealed to be a Face Dancer. In the final moments, Omnius and Erasmus reveal themselves and launch their armada. The final war begins.
