All Hail Chaos Book Summary: A Dark Romantasy Cliffhanger
Introduction
Rae Parilla walked through a portal into her sister’s favorite fantasy series and woke up as the villainess.
In All Hail Chaos by Sarah Rees Brennan, the second book of the Time of Iron series, that mistake has consequences.
The guard she got killed returns from an abyss of fire with red eyes, an army of ghouls, and a marriage proposal delivered at swordpoint.
Set in the blood-soaked realm of Eyam, the novel follows Rae as she bargains with a goddess, stages a bride-finding contest, and tries to outrun a prophecy written before she arrived.
Her sister Alice eventually enters the story too, and the narrative itself starts to buckle under the weight of everyone rewriting it.
Who Will Enjoy This Book
- Readers of adult romantasy who like enemies-to-lovers tension built on distrust rather than instant attraction.
- Fans of villainess isekai and portal fantasy, where a modern protagonist inhabits a fictional character’s body.
- Readers who enjoy dark comedy mixed with gothic court intrigue and apocalyptic battle scenes.
- Anyone following the Time of Iron series who wants the direct continuation of Rae and Key’s story.
TL;DR: The Short Version
Rae is still trapped as Lady Rahela. Key has become the Once and Forever Emperor, and he wants to marry her.
A goddess offers Rae a deal: keep Key alive, find him a true love, and win his war, and she can go home.
What follows is a bride contest, a hostage swap, an invading mechanical dragon, and a divine father returning to reclaim his throne.
The book ends with Rae choosing the one thing a story cannot ignore.
Spoilers ahead. The ending is included below. Rae Parilla wakes in the body of Lady Rahela Domitia, seated on a throne of gilded bone beside Key, her former guard. Key rose from the Dread Ravine as the Once and Forever Emperor, scarred, red-eyed, and holding a blade to her throat. He proposes marriage. Rae knows her earlier scheming is what killed him in the first place, and that the plot of the books has already shifted around her. In the real world, her sister Alice notices that the sequel novel has changed overnight. Then Alice is pulled through a portal into Eyam herself, disguised as a stable hand called “Ink.” Rae tries to retrieve the Flower of Life and Death so she can escape home. She learns Lady Horatia Nemeth already gave it away to save her dying twin, Hortensia. Trapped, Rae uses a bronze mirror in the Maidens’ Tower to summon the Great Goddess. The goddess speaks through a dead maid and offers terms. If Rae ensures Key wins against Tagar, finds his true love, and escapes his prophesied doom, Rae goes home alive. Rae understands what the story has cast her as: the disposable evil love interest. She decides to play the villainess on purpose and push Key toward a proper heroine. To that end, she convinces Prime Minister Andras Pio to revive the ancient Queen’s Trials, and she selects Lady Glacia, a shy, spectacle-wearing wallflower from Tagar, as the ideal bride. Meanwhile, Tagar invades. King Ivor the Heartless, his twin sister Princess Vasilisa, and Count Torhell Merac arrive behind a colossal flying mechanical dragon. Key fortifies Themesvar’s walls in secret using lightning and tireless dead soldiers. Elsewhere, Lord Marius Valerius and Eric Mitchell flee the capital with defecting troops. They reach Ancilley Manor, the gothic seat of House Valerius. Lord Lucius, Marius’s dead friend raised as an undead agent of the Great God, demands that Marius lead the holy Divine Order. In the slums of the Cauldron, Rahela’s former maid Emer and the original heroine Lady Lia Felice take shelter with Forge Strike, a blacksmith. Emer learns she carries forbidden Valerius blood. Lia turns the Cauldron’s criminals into a rebellion aimed at both the Emperor and the nobility. Rae, for her part, steals Key’s giant roc during the first trial to save him from Tagar’s dragon, and wins the trial herself. Key leads a victory parade through Themesvar. When a citizen confronts Rae with abuse, Key burns the man to ash. Rae flees into the Cauldron, and Key follows. Their passion grows, but neither trusts the other. Pio schemes to install his niece, Lady Ninell Almassy, as the Emperor’s bride. Then the Great God takes the body of the Duke of Valerius and besieges Ancilley Manor. Duchess Eumineda dies in the flames while Marius, Caracalla, Eric, and the minstrel Merel escape toward the Mountains of Truth. Rae goes looking for Lady Glacia and finds her dead. Her plan to hand Key a heroine has collapsed. She tries to free Princess Vasilisa from the dungeons, and Key intercepts them, confronting Rae about her lies and about her real name, Rachel. To stop the Oracle from ever speaking the prophecy of Key’s doom, Rae tricks him into sealing the Oracle’s cave on the Mountain of Truth. Then King Ivor captures her and flies her to the raider camp on his dragon. Rae escapes execution by publicly claiming to be Ivor’s betrothed. She also exposes that he had been fake-poisoning himself to avoid marrying into the feuding Starost or Merac families. Sarah Rees Brennan then moves the war onto the Waiting Wastes outside Themesvar. The Great God arrives with his holy army and the mechanical dragon. Key walks out to meet him, and father and son fight a duel that shatters the earth. Key flinches when the Great God strikes at his scarred throat, then feigns submission and embraces his divine father while planning to overthrow him. The Great God declares order restored to Eyam and brings out captives. One of them is Ink, revealed as Alice Parilla, who entered the book to save her sister. With Alice in danger and the narrative collapsing into tyranny, Rae faces Key on the golden palace walls. At her request, he crushes the cursed God’s Eye jewel to dust. Then he tells her he will not be the hero of her story. He says he will be her villain. Rae understands that changing a story demands a final sacrifice. She tells Alice she loves her and leaps from the wall into the fires of the Dread Ravine. The book closes on a cliffhanger, pointing toward Time of Iron: Book Three.
