The frame story takes place twenty-seven years after the daysdeath, when the sun has disappeared. Gabriel de Leon is imprisoned in the tower of Empress Margot Chastain’s château.

He tells his history to Jean-Francois, a vampire historian, in exchange for sanctus, the drug that feeds his powers.

Gabriel grows up in Lorson as the illegitimate son of Auriel de Leon and a vampire father. His stepfather Raphael Castia is abusive. After his sister Amélie becomes a wretched vampire and attacks him, Gabriel discovers his ability to boil vampire blood with his touch.

Silversaints Greyhand and Aaron de Coste recruit Gabriel into the Ordo Argent. He trains at San Michon, falls in love with Astrid Rennier, and receives the silversteel sword Lionclaw.

During his first hunts, Gabriel shows a rare sanguimancy gift and kills the ancient vampire Laure Voss.

Laure Voss kills Gabriel’s family before dying. Gabriel is later excommunicated when Astrid becomes pregnant. The Forever King Fabien Voss murders Astrid and takes their daughter Patience.

This loss shapes Gabriel for decades.

Seventeen years later, Gabriel rescues Sister Chloe Sauvage. Chloe is searching for the Holy Grail, which turns out to be Dior Lachance, a sixteen-year-old girl with miraculous blood.

Gabriel joins her group and becomes Dior’s protector.

Danton Voss, son of the Forever King, hunts Dior. Gabriel and Dior suffer heavy losses at San Guillaume and later shelter with Aaron and Baptiste.

Dior flees to protect the fortress and lures Danton’s horde onto a frozen river.

Dior detonates an explosive sled, shattering the ice and drowning many vampires. Gabriel, with his turned sister Liathe, kills Danton using a blade smeared in Dior’s blood.

At San Michon, Gabriel learns that ending the daysdeath requires sacrificing Dior.

Gabriel rebels, kills Greyhand and Chloe, burns the sacrificial text, and escapes with Dior. In the present, Gabriel tries to assassinate Jean-Francois, but the historian transforms into a swarm of rats and escapes.

Gabriel remains imprisoned.
