At Any Cost Summary: A Kaldis Greek Crime Thriller

Introduction

An urgent phone call from his sister interrupts Chief Inspector Andreas Kaldis’s routine in Athens.

His eighteen-year-old niece Anna, one month into university in New York, has announced she plans to marry a man she barely knows.

At the same time, the Greek government tasks Andreas with investigating a surge of catastrophic wildfires that left three unidentified victims burned beyond recognition.

In At Any Cost, Jeffrey Siger places his longtime protagonist at the intersection of family loyalty and political corruption.

The two matters—one deeply personal, one professionally explosive—converge into an international conspiracy involving government officials, foreign autocracies, and a multi-billion-euro digital infrastructure project on the Aegean island of Syros.

At Any Cost Summary: The Deep Dive

Spoilers ahead.

The novel opens in Athens, where Chief Inspector Andreas Kaldis receives a call from his sister, Gavriella.

She tells him that her daughter Anna, a freshman at New York University, plans to marry Jacob “Jack” Diamantopoulos, a twenty-seven-year-old software engineer she barely knows.

Andreas learns that Jack lost his mother in the 2003 Staten Island ferry crash and his father to a heart attack on the same date years earlier.

Rather than opposing the relationship outright, Andreas offers to fly Jack and Anna to Athens so the family can meet him.

At the same time, the Minister of Citizen Protection assigns Andreas to investigate a series of wildfires from the previous summer. The fires burned five times the national average and left three bodies charred beyond recognition.

Andreas enlists Detective Yianni Kouros and contacts Chief Homicide Investigator Tassos Stamatos on Syros. Tassos speaks with an environmental activist named Federico who reveals that foreign entities are buying burned forest land on Evia to build wind farms.

The electricity from these wind farms is intended to travel through undersea cables to Syros, where a massive digital operations center is under construction. Andreas’s team discovers that attorney Panos Cirillo represents every property transaction.

Cirillo rose from humble origins and was pushed into corruption by his ambitious American wife, Jill McLaughlin. He serves as the legal front man for a consortium comprising China, Russia, and a Middle Eastern state.

Andreas contacts Jack in New York for technical expertise. Jack explains that running a metaverse or digital propaganda hub requires enormous electrical power—comparable to powering the city of Houston. Jack agrees to fly to Athens to inspect Syros.

In New York, Jack tells Anna his fear that autocratic regimes are building computing infrastructure to conduct universal brainwashing. Anna urges him to help her uncle.

Jack lands in Athens and Andreas takes him by Coast Guard helicopter to Syros. On the island, Jack analyzes the infrastructure and warns that the project will reshape Syros with a new airport, housing developments, and foreign tech workers.

They inspect the Lazaretta ruins in Ermoupoli, a nineteenth-century quarantine hospital and former political prison. Cirillo is bribing Municipal Port Fund board members to secure the site for the consortium’s servers and transformers.

After lunch in the fishing village of Kini, Jack confirms the energy being routed to Syros far exceeds any normal commercial project. It represents a state-level bid for digital dominance.

Yianni receives a thumb drive from “Inmate Three,” a radicalized former student at Korydallos prison. The drone footage shows Cirillo near an Evia forest meeting three East Asian men who are packing arson supplies.

DNA analysis confirms the three burned victims were illegal Chinese laborers. Cirillo used them to torch the forests, poisoned them, and incinerated their bodies to eliminate witnesses.

On Thursday night, Andreas, his wife Lila, and Jack attend a cocktail party at Cirillo’s mansion. Jack poses as a digital consultant and Cirillo introduces him to “Victor,” the Chinese government representative directing the consortium’s operations.

Deputy Minister Dittos calls Cirillo late that night and mentions that Andreas has brought in an American expert who promised to expose the wildfire conspiracy by Monday. Cirillo panics and orders an abduction.

On Friday morning, Anna arrives at Athens Airport. She is intercepted by airport officers acting on a fraudulent directive email and placed into a private limousine. She is given bottled water laced with liquid ecstasy and becomes semi-conscious.

Andreas, Jack, and Yianni launch a search. They trace the limousine to an illegal helipad, where a Russian mercenary named Ivan flew the drugged Anna by helicopter to an isolated field on Mykonos.

Andreas and Jack confront Deputy Minister Dittos and force him to reveal Cirillo’s involvement. They rush to Cirillo’s mansion, where Jack throws rocks through windows to trigger alarms and draw out Jill.

Jill confesses her role in booking the transport and provides Victor’s contact information. Solona, Anna’s wealthy friend, confronts Jill and warns her of life in prison, prompting Jill to fully confess Cirillo’s arson and murder scheme.

On Mykonos, Ivan and Cirillo keep Anna captive in a locked room and continuously drug her. Anna pretends to be unconscious, stops drinking the water, and overhears their plan to transport her by fishing boat to a mega-yacht anchored off Gyaros.

Tassos alerts Andreas that a mega-yacht owned by a connected Middle Eastern figure with diplomatic immunity is anchored off Gyaros. A small boat is approaching it in the dark.

Andreas, Yianni, and Jack board a Coast Guard helicopter and fly to Gyaros. They land on the yacht’s helipad as a Coast Guard patrol boat arrives. The yacht owner claims diplomatic immunity, but Andreas refuses to back down.

Guided by Victor, Andreas broadcasts an emergency message over the ship’s loudspeaker asking Anna for a signal. Trapped inside a hidden wall compartment with Ivan and Cirillo, Anna uses her Apple Watch to remotely ping her iPhone.

Jack hears the pinging phone and uses the Find My app to locate the hidden wall panel. He smashes through the wood with a fire axe. When Ivan chokes Anna, Jack swings the axe and severs Ivan’s arm at the elbow.

Yianni and Coast Guard officers pull Anna to safety and arrest Cirillo and Ivan.

Following the rescue, Victor apologizes to Jack and Anna on deck. On Sunday, Gavi hosts a celebration in Athens and embraces Jack as her future son-in-law. She reveals that she was named after a great-grandmother slaughtered in Thessaloniki during the Holocaust.

On Monday, Andreas confronts Deputy Minister Dittos and forces his resignation. Andreas then meets with the Minister of Citizen Protection, who admits that the Greek government will allow the consortium’s metaverse project on Syros to proceed due to the economic capital involved.

One week later, Jack informs Andreas that Victor offered him the position of Operational Supervisor for the entire Syros metaverse project. Encouraged by Anna, Jack accepts the role, determined to use his position to safeguard democratic values from within.
