Severance Book Summary: Full Plot (Spoilers Ahead)

Spoiler warning: this section covers the whole story, including the ending.

Candace Chen was born in Fuzhou, China, and moved to Salt Lake City at age six with her parents, Zhigang Chen and Ruifang Yang. Both parents die before she finishes college.

She moves to New York and takes a job at Spectra, a publishing services firm, where she coordinates the printing of Bibles in Shenzhen.

She lives in Bushwick and has an on-and-off relationship with Jonathan, an idealistic writer who rejects corporate work. In summer 2011, news spreads of Shen Fever.

The airborne fungal spores cause memory loss and fatigue, and the infected repeat old habits, such as setting tables or folding clothes, until they die.

Jonathan decides to sail to Oregon and asks Candace to come. She refuses and stays at her job. As the city empties, Spectra offers a large completion bonus to a skeleton crew who stay until November 30, 2011. With no family to return to, Candace signs.

Soon she is the only person left in the thirty-two-story office. She sleeps on a Mies van der Rohe sofa in her former boss’s office. She also wanders the empty city and revives her photography blog, NY Ghost. Around this time, she learns she is pregnant with Jonathan’s child.

On November 30, she confirms the bonus has been deposited. Outside, she finds a dead saleslady she had photographed earlier. She then finds a taxi driver named Eddie, who is fevered, pulls him from the cab, and drives out through the Lincoln Tunnel.

In Pennsylvania, a group of survivors picks her up. They are heading toward “the Facility” under Bob, a former IT worker who sets strict rituals for scavenging trips, called stalks. He also kills any fevered people they meet, calling it “releasing” them. Candace grows close to Ashley, Evan, and Janelle.

During an unsanctioned night trip to Ashley’s childhood home in Ohio, Ashley falls ill with Shen Fever. Bob arrives and shoots her. Janelle tries to shield Ashley and is killed too.

The Facility turns out to be Deer Oaks Mall in Needling, Illinois, where Bob spent a lonely childhood. Bob assigns each member a store. Candace gets a L’Occitane boutique.

Evan tells Bob that Candace is pregnant and plans to leave. Bob locks her inside the store behind a security gate. She holds on to her sanity through strict daily routines. Evan, full of guilt, dies of a Xanax overdose.

Afterward, Candace sees Bob wandering the mall at night in a trance. He has caught Shen Fever himself. She shoves him down, beats him, and takes the car keys from his belt.

She drives south into Chicago, a city Jonathan once described to her. The car runs out of gas near a fallen tower crane. Candace steps out into the rain and walks toward the skyline, planning a home for herself and her unborn daughter, Luna.

Summary by Chapter (Spoilers)

The book has 27 sections: a Prologue and 26 numbered chapters. Here is a brief look at what each one covers.

Prologue

Survivors flee New York and rely on Google to learn survival skills. Bob appoints himself leader and proposes heading to “the Facility” near Chicago. The members give themselves matching lightning-bolt tattoos. Candace says she joined last, picked up in a yellow taxi in Pennsylvania.

Chapter 1

Jonathan tells Candace he is leaving New York and invites her to sail to Oregon. She refuses. At Spectra, an all-hands meeting covers Shen Fever and employees receive kits with N95 masks. Candace also deals with a Gemstone Bible problem after workers at the supplier contract pneumoconiosis.

Chapter 2

Around a campfire, Bob lectures the group about the fevered repeating old routines. Candace vomits in the woods and Bob follows her. He tells her the survivors were divinely chosen and pressures her to join group rituals.

Chapter 3

Candace recalls her first summer in New York in 2006, after her mother’s death. She photographs the city for her blog, NY Ghost. At a dinner party, she meets Steven Reitman, who gives her a business card for Spectra, and she meets Jonathan on the fire escape.

Chapter 4

The group stalks a colonial house in Ohio after rigid pre-stalk rituals. Inside, they see the fevered Gower family repeat a dinner routine. Candace finds a Bible she once oversaw at Spectra, then discovers a fevered twelve-year-old girl. Bob orders her to shoot the girl, and she fires until Janelle stops her.

Chapter 5

Candace interviews with CEO Michael Reitman for a production assistant role. He explains the job involves logistics and working with printers in Southeast Asia. He hires her on a three-month trial in the Bibles division and introduces her to Blythe, who invites her to Shenzhen.

Chapter 6

Candace and Blythe visit Phoenix Sun and Moon Ltd. in Shenzhen. Balthasar gives Candace a tour of the printing factory and its rules, including map-color censorship. That evening he emails her a translation of Li Bai’s poem “Thoughts in Night Quiet.”

Chapter 7

Candace describes her four uncles in Fuzhou. During a high school trip, she walks the city at night with her cousin Bing Bing. He predicts she will someday move back, and she imagines living by her family’s expectations.

Chapter 8

Candace and Blythe go shopping in Hong Kong, among real luxury goods and imitations. A cosmetics counter reminds Candace of her mother. Back in New York, she burns spirit money on her fire escape as an offering to her dead parents.

Chapter 9

The group continues toward Illinois. Candace, Ashley, Evan, and Janelle make a secret pact to leave if the Facility is unsuitable. Bob gives Candace a trick Bible holding her dead iPhone. That night she sees the other three drive off for an unsanctioned “baby stalk.”

Chapter 10

Candace follows the others on foot to Ashley’s childhood home in Jordanwood, Ohio. They find Ashley’s father dead in his recliner. In her bedroom, Ashley falls into a trance and tries on her old dresses, and Candace flees with Evan.

Chapter 11

Candace’s building is converted to condos, and she moves to Bushwick. Jonathan helps her move and tells her about leaving an indie magazine in Chicago after corporate cuts. They begin spending nights together.

Chapter 12

Bob drives Candace and Evan back to Ashley’s house. Evan shows Candace his Xanax, and she tells him she is pregnant. Bob, Todd, and Adam kill Ashley and Janelle. Days later, the group reaches the Facility.

Chapter 13

The chapter is written as a Shen Fever FAQ. It explains that the infection spreads through airborne spores, lists early and late symptoms, and notes that it is not spread person to person.

Chapter 14

Candace reflects on her five years at Spectra and her quiet breakup with Jonathan. She handles the replacement gemstone contract as Shen Fever cases rise in New York. She visits Lane’s SoHo loft, then sees a fevered neighbor in the hallway.

Chapter 15

The group reaches Deer Oaks Mall, the “Facility.” Bob assigns stores as personal rooms, and Candace picks L’Occitane. Bob says Evan told him about her pregnancy and escape plan, and he locks her behind a security gate.

Chapter 16

The chapter covers the 1846 Mormon exodus, then Candace’s parents’ arrival in Salt Lake City in 1988. It follows their adjustment, her father’s death in a hit-and-run, and her mother’s illness. On her deathbed, her mother tells her they wanted her to “make use of yourself.”

Chapter 17

Superstorm Mathilde approaches New York. Candace stays at the closed office and learns Lane has contracted Shen Fever. Jonathan comes to her studio, they argue and have sex during a blackout, and she realizes she is pregnant but does not tell him.

Chapter 18

A Spectra coworker, Seth, contracts Shen Fever. Travel bans and media blackouts follow. Michael Reitman offers Candace the retention contract, and after learning Steven Reitman is infected, she signs.

Chapter 19

Locked in the L’Occitane store, Candace watches the group build a garden and plan stalks. Evan avoids her. She sets strict daily routines, names her unborn baby Luna, and resolves to escape before the birth.

Chapter 20

Candace is the last employee in the Spectra office. Balthasar emails that his factory is closing because most workers have the fever. Blythe and Delilah hold a small farewell party and flee. Candace feels her baby kick for the first time.

Chapter 21

A blizzard buries the mall, and Evan’s body is carried out of his cell. Candace’s dead mother appears in a vision and urges her to escape. Candace fakes illness to meet Bob and notices the car keys on his belt.

Chapter 22

Candace lives in the Spectra office, foraging for food. She is briefly stuck in the elevator and finds that emergency services are curtailed. She photographs a loose carriage horse, commits to documenting the city, and meets Eddie, the taxi driver in a Simpsons mask.

Chapter 24

On November 30, Candace finds her bonus deposited. She finds looted stores and the dead saleslady. She finds Eddie fevered in his cab and drives out of New York.

Chapter 25

Candace goes to Hot Topic for the key and finds Bob walking the mall in a blank trance. She beats him, takes the keys, and drives away in a Nissan Maxima.

Chapter 26

Candace drives toward Chicago and reflects on Jonathan’s stories about the city. She decides to settle there with Luna. The car dies, and she walks into the city in the rain.
