Only Spell Deep Summary

SPOILERS AHEAD. This section covers the complete plot, including the ending.

Seventeen years before the main story, a fire destroyed Solidago, the white-columned Cole estate near Bandon, Oregon. Jude’s mother Winnie, her grandfather Macallister Bates, and seven staff members died.

Jude was declared dead for seventeen minutes and eleven seconds before being revived. She later refused the conditions of her grandfather’s trust fund, which required her to keep the family name and rebuild the estate.

She entered foster care, changed her name to Jude Clark, and became an ad copywriter in Seattle. In the present, she is recovering from a miscarriage and the departure of her boyfriend Roger.

At Orman Used & Rare Books, Jude buys a copy of Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar. A black envelope falls from its pages, addressed to Judeth Cole in gold script and naming a midnight meeting at Ravenna Park.

Under the Ravenna Park Bridge she meets Arla T. Wells, who leads a coven called the Fathom. Arla recognizes Jude’s suppressed abilities and offers to help her reclaim them.

Arla puts Jude through escalating trials. At the Space Needle, Jude drains the electrical grid and blacks out the landmark, confirming her electrokinesis.

At Northern State Hospital Cemetery, two coven members called the twins attack her. Twig manipulates shadow and Rock casts illusions, and Jude answers by pulling a large plume of fire from a candle wick.

Arla then brings Jude to Medusa, her multi-level speakeasy and burlesque club beneath Pioneer Square. There Jude meets Brennan, a telekinetic catalyst, and Cadence, an autistic oracle who experiences magic as taste and sensation.

Deep in the Seattle Underground, Arla unlocks a sealed brick chamber. Inside is a stone well mortared with Aramaic sigils and capped by an iron lid bearing a looping dragon symbol.

Within the well lives the Fathom, a shape-shifting primordial entity of chaos, water, and fire. Arla explains that in 1889 the Latvian demonologist Edward Rudzitin trapped it there, an act that triggered the Great Seattle Fire.

Arla claims she and the coven have been reinforcing Rudzitin’s binding spell for years. She says the entity grants them power rather than threatening them.

Meanwhile, Jude grows close to Levi Orman, the bookstore owner. Unlike Roger, Levi accepts her real identity, her family history, and her magic without hesitation.

Together they research the occult history of Seattle and reach a conclusion the coven has avoided: primordial entities cannot be permanently bound by mortal spells.

Brennan then confides in Jude that Arla is a parasitic water diviner who siphons abilities from coven members. He notes that Arla only developed pyrokinesis after Jude was recruited.

When Brennan uses telekinesis during a romantic encounter with Jude’s coworker Aaron, Arla labels him a liability. Brennan and Aaron both vanish shortly after.

Jude and Levi plan to steal Rudzitin’s journal from Arla’s penthouse safe, hoping to find a way to undo the binding safely. Jude returns to Medusa to carry out the plan.

She finds the club transformed. Arla has drugged the audience and bound Cadence on stage as a sacrifice, revealing that the binding spell requires blood given by a magical witch.

Arla also admits she has already killed Brennan, Rock, and Twig, dumping their bodies to harvest their blood. She intends to slaughter Cadence and Jude to seal the entity permanently.

Jude burns Cadence’s bonds with her fire, creating chaos on stage. She and Cadence escape into the underground and reunite with Levi, who has retrieved Rudzitin’s journal.

The three flee Seattle and drive south to the rebuilt, empty Solidago. There Jude confronts her family’s past, speaking with the spirit of her grandmother Aurelia.

Mira, the housekeeper’s daughter, reveals the truth: Aurelia did not take her own life. Macallister Bates murdered her in a jealous rage and threw her body over the sea cliff.

Aurelia’s spirit tells Jude that only blood freely given can unbind what was bound in blood taken. Jude tears her grandmother’s portrait from the wall and hurls it into the sea.

Jude realizes Arla has captured Levi and returned to Seattle. She goes back to the basement beneath Medusa for a final confrontation.

Arla, covered in the blood of her fallen coven, has suspended Levi above the well. Jude uses telekinesis to pull the Aramaic key to herself and cuts open her own arm with it.

She smears her magical blood across the sigil-covered walls, deliberately destroying the binding spell. The Fathom erupts from the well as a violent column of elemental energy.

The entity consumes Arla and drags her into the abyss, burying the remains of the coven with her. Jude snaps Levi’s chains with telekinesis and pulls him free as the foundation collapses.

They escape to the surface as Medusa and the surrounding block fall into a massive sinkhole. Six weeks later, news outlets report the collapse as a natural geological event.

Unseasonal coastal storms rage as the freed entity travels toward the South Pacific. Solidago is destroyed by the tempests, its goldenrod fields drowned and its marble mantel swept into the ocean.

Jude takes her legal inheritance and chooses to use the wealth on her own terms. Cadence visits the bookstore to say goodbye before moving to the Midwest, and Jude settles into her identity and her life with Levi.
