The Gravewood Summary: Kelly Andrew’s Dark YA Fantasy
TL;DR: The Gravewood at a Glance
A forest with teeth surrounds Little Hill. Its groundwater poisons, its trees hunt, and the people who drink from it stop being people.
In The Gravewood, Kelly Andrew places seventeen-year-old Shea Parker at the edge of that forest with a secret in her cellar: her infected mother, chained and hungry. To keep her hidden, Shea barters her own blood to Oliver Lysander, the boy the valley calls the Gravewood Devil.
Their arrangement pulls Shea into a road trip south, a runaway crew, a wood watch sniper hunting his missing sister, and a ruler who wants Lysander for reasons of his own. The book blends dark fantasy, gothic horror, and a slow-burn romance across a quarantined New England.
- Setting: A quarantined New England valley beside a 4,000-acre carnivorous forest.
- Central bargain: Blood for batteries, then blood for a promised cure.
- Central journey: A motorcycle and RV run south toward Paris Keeling’s revel in Florida.
- Key themes: Family loyalty, infection and identity, sacrifice, isolation, inherited violence.
- Shape: Four acts, 31 sections, and a road-trip structure with betrayals at every stop.
It is a monster story about who gets to stay human, and what people trade to keep the ones they love alive.

The Gravewood Summary: Full Story (Spoilers)
Spoiler warning: the following section recounts the plot, including the ending.
Little Hill sits beneath Mercy Mountain, bordered by the Gravewood, a sentient forest that grew teeth after ancient Arctic microbes reached the regional water supply. The infected water turns people into hollows, blood-hungry creatures the wood watch is ordered to execute.
Shea Parker’s father, Calhoun, disappeared into the trees years earlier. Her mother, Ivy, later drank contaminated water and became a hollow, and Shea now keeps her chained to industrial shelving in the cellar.
Shea’s hearing aids depend on batteries that supply lines no longer deliver. Six months before the main story, she walks into the Gravewood alone and strikes a bargain with Oliver Lysander at Mercy Ridge: her blood in exchange for batteries.
Lysander rules the abandoned ski lodge with a crew of runaway recruits called the Mercy Boys. He tests newcomers by making them drink from a corrupted iron pump fed by forest groundwater.
When Camellia Thorley goes missing, her brother Asher returns from the wood watch on leave. He catches Shea feeding Ivy in the cellar and nearly shoots the hollow, learning the secret Shea has kept from everyone.
Shea insists Lysander does not have Camellia. Asher infiltrates Mercy Ridge anyway, is captured, and offers his skills as a sniper in exchange for help finding his sister.
Lysander proposes a new deal to Shea: accompany him to Paris Keeling’s hunter’s revel in Florida and agree to Turn, and he will provide a real cure for Ivy. Shea accepts.

Shea, Lysander, Asher, and Poppy Zahar leave Mercy Ridge on dirt bikes, heading south with Poppy’s possum, Kit. Paris Keeling sends infected assassins after Shea, including the recruit Tristan Choi and Conall Sullivan.
Sullivan ambushes Shea on a logging road and bites her throat. A horned creature tears out his heart and vanishes before flashlights arrive, and Shea sees Lysander’s monstrous form for the first time.
Tristan later attacks Shea inside the lodge. She stabs him with a knitting needle and Asher finishes him with a wooden stake, confirming that Paris is targeting her directly.
The group stops in Pennsylvania at the farm of Egor van Haut, a phytologist and former colleague of Paris. Egor explains that Lysander’s body accepted the Rot without losing his mind.
Egor drugs Shea and tries to experiment on Lysander, keeping his own mutated son, Nel, locked in a barn stall. Asher breaks them free and leaves Egor bound.
Egor warns that Lysander’s true nature will unleash a coming “age of the beast,” a chant the travelers keep finding carved into walls. Poppy also steals a black-eyed fetus specimen from his lab.
Shea slips away alone in the red silk dress Paris sent and enters his St. Augustine mansion. Paris reveals he is Lysander’s estranged father, making Lysander’s real name Oliver Keeling.
Paris also holds Camellia, now a hollow, and admits he orchestrated the conflict to break Lysander’s humanity. Asher, he says, had been communicating with him all along to protect his sister.
Paris attempts a ritualistic coronation in the ballroom. Asher shoots him through the heart with a white oak stake, killing him as hollows and wood watch soldiers storm the estate.
Egor arrives with military units and arrests Asher for desertion while apprehending Lysander. Delirious with bloodlust, Lysander bites Shea once more before Shea drives a wooden stake into his chest.
Weeks later, Shea wakes in an interrogation room at a wood watch garrison in northern Maine. An interrogator offers her hearing aid batteries if she helps track down Lysander, who survived the staking and destroyed a military transport.
Shea refuses unless they release Asher, who faces trial for desertion. She reunites with Poppy and a quiet, infected Camellia in the infirmary.
Shea resolves that if Lysander cannot be saved from his monstrous impulses, she will hunt him down and drive a stake through his heart herself.
