Of Ink and Alchemy Summary: Sloane St. James’ Dark Romance

TL;DR

Inside a Minneapolis tattoo studio called Black Rabbit, a twenty-six-year-old apprentice named Kelly Everhart is trying to build an artistic identity of her own while carrying the weight of her late father’s reputation.

The shop is run by Logan Teller, her father’s former protĂ©gĂ© and her mentor, a man who has kept his feelings for her buried for years behind a professional wall. Sloane St. James builds Of Ink and Alchemy around that restraint, then lets it break.

What follows mixes studio life, artistic ambition, and a threatening presence that begins circling Kelly and the shop’s legacy.

Who Will Enjoy This Book

  • Readers of contemporary dark romance and romantic suspense.
  • Fans of mentor-and-apprentice dynamics and possessive, morally gray male leads.
  • Readers drawn to tattoo culture, found-family workplaces, and dual point-of-view narration.
  • Those who prefer high-heat romance paired with a stalker-driven external plot.

The setup: Kelly Everhart pierces and apprentices at Black Rabbit, the shop her late father Clyde made famous. Logan Teller, Clyde’s best student, now owns it — and has loved Kelly quietly for years under a promise he made to her dying father.

The turn: Logan stops waiting. A hand-painted tarot deck, a tattoo of Kelly’s own face on his bicep, and a Montana road trip push them past friendship.

The threat: Anonymous messages reading “You will never replace me” escalate into surveillance photos, a hidden marriage, and a confrontation with a stalker who was presumed dead.

The core ideas: grief as inheritance, art as identity, protection versus control, and the difference between chosen devotion and obsession.

Expect a fast-moving, sensual, dual-POV novel that ends with a wedding on the ashes of a burned house.

Of Ink and Alchemy Summary: The Full Story

Spoilers ahead. This section covers the complete plot, including the ending.

Kelly “Chaos” Everhart works as a body piercer and tattoo apprentice at Black Rabbit, the Minneapolis studio her father founded.

Clyde Everhart, a legend in American tattooing, has died, and ownership passed to his top protégé, thirty-two-year-old Logan Teller.

Logan has loved Kelly for years. He stayed away only because Clyde asked him on his deathbed to let her grow up first.

Kelly is dating a man named Jason Seleigh, who is clearly wrong for her. Logan interferes quietly, stacking tarot spreads and nudging Jason out of her orbit while finishing a gift: seventy-eight hand-painted tarot cards built from Clyde’s original artwork.

On Kelly’s twenty-sixth birthday, Jason fails to show up for dinner. Logan consoles her at her house and gives her the deck along with one of the sealed letters Clyde left for her major life milestones.

The next day Jason arrives at the shop with roses. Logan confronts him, and the argument becomes a physical fight that leaves Jason bloodied and thrown out.

At the same time, anonymous Instagram messages begin arriving: “You will never replace me.” Suspicion lands on Jason or on Billy Akers, the corrupt former business manager who embezzled from Black Rabbit and tried to sell the shop before Logan forced him out.

Logan also rescues a large abandoned dog outside the studio and names him Odin. The dog quickly becomes a shared companion for both of them.

The line between them breaks one night at Logan’s loft, where he is photographing Kelly as reference for oil paintings. Years of suppressed tension surface at once.

Days later, Logan asks Kelly to tattoo a sketch of her own face onto his bare bicep — a canvas he had deliberately kept empty for her. The session runs eleven hours, and he tells her plainly that what he wants is permanent, not a fling.

The Black Rabbit crew travels to Bozeman, Montana, for a tattoo festival. Kelly competes in medium black-and-gray with a realism piece of an astronaut and a deep-sea diver, a tribute to her father, and takes an honorable mention ribbon.

At the venue she meets a warm, supportive woman calling herself Rosa. Rosa warns Kelly about a man watching her across the floor.

Back in Minneapolis, the stalking escalates. Logan finds a printed note on his truck windshield with the same line: “You will never replace me.”

Inside the loft, Kelly finds an envelope of printed photographs taken of them during private moments in the studio. Logan moves her into his loft and installs security sensors at her house.

Then Logan’s buried secrets surface. He adopted Odin deliberately to comfort her. He quietly filed a legal proxy marriage in Montana so Kelly would inherit Black Rabbit if anything happened to him. He also withheld the full story of Billy Akers’s financial betrayal.

Feeling managed rather than protected, Kelly asks for a break. She then reads another of Clyde’s milestone letters, this one titled “WHEN KELLY GETS ENGAGED,” which reminds her that love requires repeated, deliberate choice.

Before they reconcile, Rosa invites Kelly out for drinks. Instead of a bar, Rosa drives her to a secluded Airbnb and slips a sedative into her wine.

Rosa’s real identity is Piper Nygaard, Logan’s ex-fiancĂ©e whom everyone believed had died years earlier. She faked her death, built a delusion that Logan still mourned her, and resurfaced after learning about the marriage filing.

Drugged and losing motor control, Kelly places a disguised call to Logan and uses American Sign Language to signal that she has been poisoned and is near a blue house.

Piper ties Kelly to a chair, slaps her, takes her wedding ring, and pours gasoline over her clothes and throat. Kelly taunts her, pointing out that Logan will see Kelly’s face on his arm every day for the rest of his life.

Logan and law enforcement trace the location. He kicks the door in, drives Piper into a wall until she is unconscious, and cuts Kelly free.

As he carries Kelly out the back door, a stray spark ignites the fumes and the house erupts. Piper dies in the fire.

Two months later, police close the investigation, ruling it a fatal fire caused by Piper and clearing Kelly and Logan of liability. They decide not to rebuild Kelly’s burned home.

The epilogue covers their formal wedding, held on the overgrown lot where Kelly’s house once stood, in front of the single charred cottonwood tree that survived.

Their found family — Casper, Thor, Frankie, Herb, and Camden — surrounds them as Casper reads Clyde Everhart’s final posthumous wedding letter. The bond, the letter says, was forged of ink and alchemy.

Quotes from Of Ink and Alchemy Book

“Stop being a pussy. Take care of my girl.” —Clyde

“Sometimes a person can change your life in the most amazing ways without ever being a part of it the way you want them to. For me, that person is Logan—and I’m okay with that. Really.”

“I’m a man who knows what he wants. For years I’ve stood in the background, biding my time while you chased flings. It wasn’t patience, it was discipline. The way I wanted you never grew stronger—it grew darker. There’s no one else for me. You’re it.”

“I’ve wanted you to mark me permanently for longer than you know. I’ll never regret having something that ties me to you.”

“You’re more than a masterpiece, more than a muse, or all the ways you torment me. You and I are more powerful than art, sweetheart—we’re alchemy.”

“You’re forgettable. But me? He can’t forget me. How can he when my face is permanently inked on his arm? He’ll think about me every day for the rest of his life. You might kill me, but seeing me on his body will haunt you for the rest of your miserable existence.”

“Love him the way you deserve to be loved—loud, fierce, and unapologetic.”
