Dollface by Lindy Ryan Summary: Suburban Horror Unmasked
TL;DR: The Short Version
A horror novelist moves her family into a picture-perfect New Jersey suburb and joins the elementary school PTA. Within weeks, women on the PTA board are being attacked by a figure in a vintage plastic doll mask.
Dollface by Lindy Ryan places its protagonist, Jill Marshall, inside the polished world of fundraising, ice cream socials, and cosmetics multi-level marketing — then turns that world into a killing ground.
The novel moves between present-day Brunswick and a 1998 Texas childhood scarred by a mother’s suicide. It follows a woman trying to protect her family while confronting what she may have inherited.
- Who: Jill Marshall, a bestselling horror author, her Coast Guard husband Rob, their eight-year-old son Tanner, and their dog Lugosi.
- Where: Brunswick, New Jersey — an affluent suburb ruled by PTA politics and a cosmetics MLM called Dollface.
- What happens: A masked attacker begins mutilating and killing women connected to the PTA. The suspect is always described the same way: a blonde woman with a pert nose and a beauty mark.
- The twist: There are two attackers — a neighbor acting on a warped idea of self-improvement, and someone far closer to Jill.
- Core themes: suburban performance, inherited trauma, and a sisterly bond that curdles into obsession.

Spoiler warning: This section covers the plot in full, including the ending.
Jill Marshall leaves Houston for Brunswick, New Jersey, so her husband Rob can take a Coast Guard post near Staten Island. She picks a neocolonial house with a first-floor conservatory she turns into her writing office.
Her neighbor Darla Lashett arrives on day one with a welcome basket. Darla runs the Brunswick Elementary PTA and sells Dollface cosmetics, and she recruits Jill as Cultural Arts chairperson.
A brunch at the Dream Bean Café introduces Jill to the board: Maribel, Kellen, Sasha, Beth, and later Rosa. The women mock Darla openly. The café’s barista, Barb, body-shames her over a pastry order.
That night, someone in a pink rain poncho and a plastic doll mask slashes Barb’s throat with a wedding cake knife outside the café. Jill drives past the body bag the next morning.
Darla forces an unsolicited Dollface makeover on Jill in her bedroom. The heavy cosmetics trigger memories of Jill’s mother, who died by suicide in 1998 surrounded by broken compacts. Jill scrubs her face until it burns.
During a Friday “Doll’s Night” sales party, Maribel is attacked at home. Heavy pruning shears are driven into her skull, but she survives and describes her attacker as a blonde woman with a pert nose and a beauty mark.

Jill starts an evidence corkboard in her office. She maps the victims against Darla and against Patti Townsend, the previous owner of her house.
At the PTA Ice Cream Social, Darla produces a vintage gelato scoop that once belonged to Patti. That night, Kellen is attacked on a park run and her eye is gouged out with that same scoop.
Jill tells Rob her theory that Patti is the killer. Rob calls it a paranoid plot line from one of her novels. They argue, and he retreats to the basement.
Sasha is then attacked at her church while returning borrowed tools. A battery-powered hand sander grinds her scalp down to the bone.
Jill researches online and finds two facts. Darla’s husband Dave is a neurosurgeon, and Patti Townsend had filed a stalking restraining order against Darla before selling her house.
Jill concludes Darla is the attacker and that the doll mask is a disguise. Then she finds a Ben Cooper doll mask hanging from a bush outside her writing office window.
Rob is deployed to an oil spill in the Gulf. Almost immediately, Jill’s younger sister Kitty arrives from Oregon unannounced, saying she came to check on her.
On the night of the school’s Boogie Bash Halloween carnival, Kitty paints Jill in porcelain doll makeup so they match. Kitty then takes Tanner home early, leaving Jill to help clean up the darkened school.
In the dark hallways, Darla corners Jill with a cereal spoon prop. She confesses to attacking Barb, Maribel, Kellen, and Sasha to “fix their flaws” and give them “fresh starts” — based on offhand comments Jill had made.
Jill slashes Darla’s face with a metal desk placard and flees into the principal’s office. There she finds Principal Fred Hart dead, his throat sawed nearly through.
In the cafeteria, Jill finds Rosa drowned upside-down in an apple-bobbing barrel. Then Kitty steps out from behind a stage flat holding a paper-cutter guillotine blade.
Kitty reveals she is the real killer. She sawed Hart’s neck and drowned Rosa. She also drowned Jill’s childhood cockatiel, Norman, in 1998 — to get her sister’s undivided attention.
Kitty says she hid in Jill’s soundproofed basement, used Darla’s lost doll mask to frame her, and escalated the violence deliberately. She is furious that Jill built her own family and moved away.
Kitty cuts her own throat and tackles Jill to the floor. Darla strikes Kitty over the head with the heavy cereal spoon prop, saving Jill’s life.
Police arrive. Darla is arrested for the non-lethal mutilations, and an injured, handcuffed Kitty is taken away in an ambulance.
Jill promises Kitty they will still take care of each other. Reunited with Tanner and Rob, she throws away her evidence corkboard and turns to writing her next novel.

Summary by Chapter (Spoilers)
This section offers a brief look at each chapter for readers who want to see how the book is structured. Dollface contains 29 sections, labeled Chapter Zero through Chapter Twenty-Eight.
Chapter Zero: In summer 1998, young Kitty tells her sister Jill that their cockatiel Norman is floating dead in the pool.
Their mother sits on a closet floor smearing heavy makeup over her face and scratching her skin with mirror shards. Jill retrieves the bird, promises Kitty they will always take care of each other, and then finds their mother dead.
Chapter One: In the present, Jill studies her face in the mirror and fears becoming her mother. She takes a call from Kitty, now an influencer living in a van in Oregon, and describes the family’s move to Brunswick. The call ends when a stranger rings the doorbell with a gift basket.
Chapter Two: Jill opens the door to Darla Lashett, who delivers a welcome basket with cookies and Dollface cosmetics samples. The two bond over scary movies, and Tanner and Lugosi come downstairs to meet her. Darla recruits Jill as PTA Cultural Arts chair and invites her to brunch.
Chapter Three: Darla drives Jill and Tanner to the Dream Bean Café and introduces her to the PTA board. The board members treat Darla dismissively and argue over paper cups for the Ice Cream Social. Barista Barb makes a fat-shaming remark about Darla, and Jill defends her by ordering extra croissants.
Chapter Four: Jill mutes the PTA group text and unpacks her office. Rob comes home from his commute, and they share Darla’s cookies. Jill’s editor Charlene demands progress on her overdue second novel, so Jill pins Darla’s business card to her corkboard and jokes about “dolls in space.”
Chapter Five: At sunset, a masked woman waits outside the closing Dream Bean Café with a mother-of-pearl cake knife. She puts on dishwashing gloves, a pink poncho, and a plastic doll mask, then breaks the security light. When Barb opens the back door, the doll saws through her throat.
Chapter Six: Jill drives Tanner to Trader Joe’s and finds police cruisers and a body bag outside the café. A clerk confirms the barista’s throat was cut. Back home, Kitty sends a horror-clown makeup tutorial, a news alert follows, and Darla appears at Jill’s car window pressing for a makeover.
Chapter Seven: Darla leads Jill upstairs for a Dollface makeover with a pink-and-teal Caboodles case. Jill confides in her about her mother’s suicide surrounded by cosmetics. After Darla leaves, Jill sees her reflection and scrubs her face until her skin burns.
Chapter Eight: Jill and Rob discuss the murder while doing dishes, and Jill notes how personal the attack seemed. Rob jokes about cozy mysteries and slasher movies and calls her the “Final Girl” of her own story. They share an intimate moment, but Jill stays anxious.
Chapter Nine: Jill walks to Darla’s house for the “Doll’s Night” party. Darla presents her cosmetics line to Kellen, Sasha, Beth, and Rosa, and Rosa recognizes Jill as a horror author. The guests ignore the pitch to gossip about Barb’s murder, and Darla sits quietly.
Chapter Ten: The masked doll drives to a hidden driveway behind Maribel’s home. She retrieves a spare key from under the back doormat and enters. Standing behind Maribel’s armchair, the doll drives pruning shears into her skull, then wrestles the tool free and leaves.
Chapter Eleven: On the first day of school, Principal Hart and Detective Steve Hudson brief the PTA board on Maribel’s attack. Hudson says Maribel survived a craniotomy and described a blonde woman with a pert nose and a beauty mark. Jill points out the PTA connection, but Hudson sees no link.
Chapter Twelve: Jill visits Darla, who is gardening with rusted shears and seems unbothered by the news. Darla reveals her husband Dave was Maribel’s attending doctor and nominates Jill as Vice President. Back in her office, Jill pins photos to her corkboard and notices Patti Townsend matches the suspect description.
Chapter Thirteen: Rob and Jill try to be intimate, but Jill is distracted by the violence. Kitty video calls wearing doll face-paint with button eyes. Jill shows her the corkboard, and Kitty dismisses it as coincidence and warns her not to obsess. Jill turns the corkboard to face the wall.
Chapter Fourteen: The PTA hosts the Ice Cream Social, with Darla dressed as “strawberry” and Jill as the “cherry on top.” Dave arrives with a vintage gelato scoop that once belonged to Patti Townsend. Rosa later mentions that Patti hated Darla before moving away.
Chapter Fifteen: The masked doll follows Kellen on a night run, carrying Patti’s gelato scoop. In the park lot, the doll pins Kellen’s ankle with the car bumper, knocking her to the pavement. Straddling the dazed woman, the doll gouges out her eyeball with the scoop.
Chapter Sixteen: The PTA group text reports that Kellen was found with her eye gouged out, and the suspect description matches again. Jill presents her corkboard to Rob and accuses Patti Townsend. Rob rejects it as paranoid fiction and urges her to quit the PTA, leaving a rift between them.
Chapter Seventeen: Darla drives Jill to a school security meeting in her husband’s beige Benz. When Jill asks about Patti, Darla falters and admits things ended intensely. At the school, Darla presents a security plan for the Boogie Bash, and Principal Hart approves it.
Chapter Eighteen: In October, the PTA unpacks storage tubs for Boogie Bash. Sasha shows off power tools borrowed from her church library, and Jill finds dozens of Ben Cooper-style costume masks in a tub. When Jill tries on a vintage bride mask, Kellen screams.
Chapter Nineteen: The masked doll waits outside the church while Sasha returns the borrowed tools. She slips through an unlocked back door and follows Sasha into the tool room. After knocking her unconscious with a palm sander, the doll grinds the tool into her head and scalps her to the bone.
Chapter Twenty: Jill realizes Kellen screamed because the killer wore a vintage Ben Cooper doll mask, which explains why the description never matched a real person. She finds that Dave Lashett is a neurosurgeon and that Patti filed a stalking restraining order against Darla. Then she finds a doll mask hanging outside her office window.
Chapter Twenty-One: Detective Hudson dismisses the mask as a Halloween prank. Rob receives emergency deployment orders to a Gulf oil spill, and Kitty unexpectedly arrives with a duffel bag. After Rob leaves, Jill confesses to Kitty that she believes Darla is the attacker.
Chapter Twenty-Two: Kitty dresses as a rag doll and applies matching porcelain doll makeup to Jill using Jill’s old childhood Caboodles case. Jill lays out her full theory about Darla’s access to weapons and medical knowledge. Kitty validates it, and the sisters end up looking like identical twins.
Chapter Twenty-Three: Jill, Kitty, and Tanner arrive at the crowded Boogie Bash, where Darla in a witch costume oversees apple-bobbing barrels. Kitty introduces herself to the traumatized board members, and Principal Hart flirts with her. Kitty takes Tanner home, leaving Jill to clean up as the lights go out.
Chapter Twenty-Four: The doll enters the dark cafeteria where Rosa is clearing the apple-bobbing barrels alone. She strokes Rosa’s hair, shoves her headfirst into a water barrel, and holds her under until she drowns. The doll puts on Rosa’s kitten-ear headband and heads deeper into the school.
Chapter Twenty-Five: Fleeing through dark hallways, Jill is cornered by Darla, who admits she killed Barb and attacked the others to “fix their flaws.” Jill finds Principal Hart dead in his office, slashes Darla with a desk nameplate, and runs into the cafeteria. There she finds Rosa’s body and turns to face Kitty.
Chapter Twenty-Six: Holding a paper-cutter guillotine blade, Kitty reveals herself as the true killer. She confesses to killing Hart, drowning Rosa, and drowning Norman the cockatiel in 1998 while their mother watched. She says Jill abandoned her, then presses the blade against her own throat.
Chapter Twenty-Seven: Jill fights to pull the blade away and cuts her own hands. Kitty pins her down and presses the blade into Jill’s throat, and Darla strikes Kitty unconscious with the cereal spoon prop. Darla binds Kitty, admits to the earlier attacks, and says she saved Jill because they are true friends. Police arrive.
Chapter Twenty-Eight: Jill calls Rob and learns Tanner is safe at Darla’s house with Dave. Detective Hudson grieves as Rosa’s body is loaded into a hearse, and police arrest Darla and wheel out a handcuffed Kitty. Jill promises Kitty they will take care of each other, then carries Tanner home.
