Her Hidden Fire Summary: Clíodhna O’Sullivan’s Dark Fantasy
Her Hidden Fire: A Herder, a Secret Gift, and a Realm Built on Stolen Lives
On the high slopes of the Blackstairs Mountains, a seventeen-year-old herder named Éadha reaches for a stranded sheep and feels something impossible: a silver thread of power waiting to be pulled.
In Clíodhna O’Sullivan’s Her Hidden Fire, that single moment opens a door into Domhain, a realm where magic belongs to noble Families who fuel it by draining the life force of bound commoners.
Éadha is not supposed to have any gift at all.
What she carries is a form of power the world has been taught to forget.
The novel follows her from a mountain keep to a sea-girt academy of rigid privilege, where she must decide how much of herself to hide.

Her Hidden Fire Summary: What Happens in the Novel
Spoiler warning: the following section describes the full plot, including the ending.
Part One: Ailm’s Keep
The story opens on the morning of Ionáin’s Reckoning at Ailm’s Keep. Ionáin is the last heir of House Ailm, and two failed Reckonings in a row would hand the Keep to his uncle, Lord Huath.
A week earlier, Éadha kisses Ionáin on the mountain Steps, then saves a stranded yearling by instinctively pulling a silver thread of power into herself. That night the singer Magret tests her mind and finds Éadha to be a natural-born Channeller.
Magret then takes Éadha beneath the West Wing to the Fodder Wing, where four chained, emaciated people are held. Éadha learns that Channellers do not generate magic at all — they drain life force from bound commoners through silver threads.
Magret teaches her thought-walls so she can hide her gift. During Ionáin’s Reckoning in the Great Hall, Master Dathin finds no magic in him. Éadha breaks her promise and floods her own power into Ionáin, and Dathin declares him gifted.
At the commoners’ Reckoning, Éadha reveals only a sliver of awareness and is declared a Keeper. She resolves to travel to Lambay and secretly keep fueling Ionáin’s lie.
Part Two: Lambay, First Island
On the journey, a she-dragon glides down, looks at Éadha, and speaks the word “Mahera” before flying off. Huath organizes a hunt. At camp, Ionáin tells Éadha, “You are my one thing.”
At First House, thirty-eight apprentices assemble, including Gry, Senan, Ailbhe, and the twins Linn and Coll. Channellers sit on velvet chairs while Keepers sit on wooden pews and live under the Keeper’s Code.
During Matins, drugged molash incense and drumming shatter Éadha’s thought-wall, though she rebuilds it before the searching Keepers find her. Gry warns her that Ailbhe has marked Ionáin as a future husband.
Gry later shows Éadha a hidden inlet where chained Fodder are unloaded into sea caves, and explains that the academy’s “Purification” is a process of moral seduction. Éadha studies Magret’s spellbook and builds a mirror sheath illusion to send Ionáin power from a distance.
When Ailbhe throws the spellbook into the hearth, Éadha leaps two stories and strikes her with a fiery bolt. Gry tackles her to the ground and takes the hit, keeping her gift concealed.
Éadha also visits a captured young dragon in an iron cage and teaches it to draw magic from its own heart. On the eve of its scheduled execution, she channels across the island, and the dragon melts its bars and escapes.
During the autumn trials, Éadha fails to send power in time and Ionáin fails an initial test. In the official combat match she is paired with Senan while Ionáin faces Ailbhe, and she secretly boosts Ionáin to victory. Senan accuses her of sabotage.
Lady Hera then takes Éadha to an overgrown burial mound marked with a granite headstone reading LEAH. Hera reveals that Leah was the eldest sister of the Three Brothers, imprisoned on Second Island until she died and erased from the Annals.

Part Three: Lambay, Second Island and the Climax
At Second House, Head Keeper Maebh announces permanent pairings: Ionáin with Ailbhe, Linn with Gry, and Éadha with Senan. Ionáin addresses Éadha coldly as a servant, and Senan begins abusing her in private.
At the Welcome Ball, Channellers inhale molash smoke and drain Fodder behind velvet curtains while Ionáin dances with Ailbhe. Gry pulls Éadha onto the dance floor and later urges her to drop her thought-wall, and both of their magics flare in a rush of mutual desire. Éadha pulls back.
Sentenced to remedial labor in the Fodder Holds, Éadha meets Seoda, who reveals that sensitive Fodder can see magic threads and know Éadha shields them. Seoda gives her a dress made from scraps of Erisen silk.
At the Midwinter Ball, Ionáin flies Éadha to a glass alcove and confesses his love, but refuses to run away with her. Later that night Senan corners Éadha in an aerie and tries to assault her; Gry blasts him unconscious and is arrested for harboring an unregistered gift.
During dragon combat practice, Senan deliberately over-drains his threads and kills Seoda in front of Éadha. Éadha confronts him on the beach, blocks his draw entirely, and leaves him powerless on the sand.
She then confronts Ionáin in the Hall of Illusions, kisses him one last time, and tells him the truth: he has no gift, and she has fueled him since his Reckoning. He reacts with devastation and anger and tells her to leave him forever.
Master Dathin, having overheard, pins Éadha to the wall and declares her self-sourcing magic the ultimate threat to the Channeller empire. As he prepares to execute her, Ionáin creates a mirror decoy and shouts, “RUN!”
Éadha escapes down the elevator shaft into the Fodder Holds, where she finds Gry chained in a cell. Masters Dathin, Joen, and Ruadh descend with Keepers, and Éadha fights them in a magical duel, reflecting their bolts back.
Cornered in Gry’s cell, Gry offers her his remaining life force as a voluntary gift. As he kisses her, his power flows into Éadha, and she escapes down the dead-Fodder chute into the ocean.
She swims to First Island and collapses in an overgrown ruin. At dawn, Lord Huath and his guards surround her, and Huath opens a deep gash across her belly.
As he moves in to finish her, Éadha touches a root that is actually an illusion concealing the returned young dragon.
The dragon says “Mahera” and pours its heart-sourced energy into her, healing her instantly.
Éadha manifests transparent golden wings, rises into the sky, and blocks Huath’s connections to the Fodder wagons, leaving him without fuel. He falls to his death in the forest below.
Éadha mounts the dragon. Together they soar over First House, burn the eastern gate of the Fodder Hold, and fly away into the north and west — free at last.

Quotes from Her Hidden Fire
“She was riding into the heart of the great lie that channeling was built on. A lie of power without price. And into that big lie she was bringing her own smaller lie: that the beautiful boy she’d loved her whole life was powerful too.”
“Only in submission are we truly blessed.”
“This place, it’s all about power. Having it, keeping it.”
“What they’re doing here, they call it Purification, but it isn’t. It’s seduction. Seducing decent people into believing they’re so special it’s their right to drain Fodder.”
“The shape of love in my heart is you. So how could I ever…?”
“You must understand you’re more precious than you know, and you absolutely mustn’t let the Masters discover your true abilities. Please. I still need you not dead.”
