The story moves between the affluent Chicago suburb of Grace Village and its neighboring working-class counterpart, Grace Park.

The social divide between these two towns mirrors the fractured relationships at the center of the narrative. Cold, snowy weather creates an oppressive atmosphere that underscores the isolation and deception running through every layer of the plot.

In May 1998, fourteen-year-old Luke Rankin was a celebrated youth baseball pitcher with exceptional talent. His twelve-year-old sister Allison felt invisible next to his athletic success.

Their mother focused obsessively on Luke’s games while criticizing Allison’s appearance and weight. On the day of a major accident, their mother skipped Allison’s Scholastic Bowl tournament to attend Luke’s baseball game in Texas.

Overwhelmed by resentment, Allison rode to the school bike racks and severed the brake lines on Luke’s mountain bike using a paper razor blade she carried in her backpack.

That evening, Finley Brice handed Luke the sabotaged bike during a reckless game called “Ride the Hill.” Luke flew down a steep hill without brakes and collided head-on with a car driven by Carmela Muller.

Luke survived, but the crash tore his right labrum and permanently ended his pitching career.

Carmela Muller pled guilty to DUI and served eighteen months in prison. Her lawyers possessed security footage showing Allison tampering with the bike.

Carmela chose to take the fall to protect twelve-year-old Allison from having her life destroyed. This secret remained buried for twenty-seven years.

On June 11, 2025, Allison Rankin Brice is staking out the home of her husband Finley’s mistress. She wears black clothing, removes her front license plate, and leaves her phone at home to establish a false alibi. After seeing Finley with another woman through a window, she vomits in disgust and drives away.

On the drive home, a yellow Ford F-250 truck aggressively tailgates her and corners her in an empty parking lot at Mortimer College.

The driver, a violent criminal named Marlow Luckett, approaches her SUV with a crowbar. Unable to load her unregistered handgun, Allison floors the accelerator and strikes Marlow, knocking him unconscious before fleeing.

Luke rushes to the scene and replaces the security camera discs with blanks, protecting Allison from a hit-and-run charge.

Marlow survives with a concussion. Wanting to hide his attempted assault on a woman, he falsely tells police that a muscular white man in an unspecified SUV hit him. This lie will later entangle him in a murder investigation he did not commit.

Allison discovers Finley is using their downtown investment condominium on Erie Street to conduct an affair with Trinity Casto. Trinity is a gym owner directing a documentary about Luke’s coaching career. Allison decides to destroy Trinity through an elaborate frame-up.

Allison steals a tube of Trinity’s lipstick from Luke’s house and obtains a purple shopping bag from Trinity’s gym. She fills the bag with one hundred Oxycodone pills from a massive unused prescription given to Finley after his knee surgeries.

She plants the bag in Trinity’s car trunk and instructs her private investigator, Jennifer Harper, to tip off the Illinois State Police anonymously.

The plan collapses when Luke volunteers to drive Trinity’s car to deliver clothes to her brother Max at Olivet Nazarene University. State troopers pull Luke over, search the trunk, and find the planted drugs and lipstick. Luke is arrested for drug trafficking.

What Allison does not know is that Trinity and Luke had security footage from a junction box camera behind Trinity’s gym. The footage caught Allison planting the drugs.

Seeking revenge, Luke and Trinity swapped the purple gym bag and Trinity’s lipstick for one of Allison’s grocery bags and her own Charlotte Tilbury lipstick. When forensic DNA and fingerprint tests come back, they match Allison. She is exposed as the true source of the contraband.

Marlow Luckett recognizes Allison’s picture in the newspaper. He corners her in her garage, beats her, and forces her to wire twenty-five thousand dollars to his account under threat of death. Marlow also begins blackmailing Finley, who had stolen his phone during the hit-and-run incident.

Luke shows Finley the security footage of Allison’s hit-and-run. Finley uses it to blackmail Allison, demanding a two-million-dollar lump-sum divorce settlement to keep the video from destroying her legal career. On April 1, 2026, Allison meets Finley at the condo and refuses the payment.

She reveals to him that Trinity is actually Carmela Muller’s daughter, using him to get revenge for Luke’s ruined career.

Later that evening, their eighteen-year-old son Grayson arrives at the condo to confront his father after spotting him with another woman.

Grayson finds Finley dead on the floor.

Finley had been stabbed through the chest with a silver-plate letter opener. Trinity Casto had visited Finley, who attacked her in a rage, and she stabbed him in self-defense.

Grayson, covered in blood, calls Allison in a panic.

Knowing her son will be the primary suspect, Allison orchestrates an elaborate cover-up. She drives to the condo with her front license plate removed and her phone left at home to establish an alibi.

She instructs Luke to stay at her house and send scheduled text messages between her phone and Finley’s phone, fabricating a conversation that places Finley at Ohio Street Beach waiting to meet Marlow Luckett.

At the condo, Allison cleans up physical evidence and retrieves twenty thousand dollars in cash from Finley’s hamper. She stuffs the money and the bloody letter opener into Finley’s expensive red leather Divonti Appagante duffel bag. She wraps his body in painter’s drop cloths, places him on a wardrobe cart, and loads him into his Jeep Wagoneer.

Allison drives to a residential construction site in Grace Park where Marlow Luckett works and dumps Finley’s body in a dumpster. She then drives the Wagoneer to Cicero and plants the red duffel bag containing the cash and traces of Finley’s blood in Marlow’s woodpile.

Sergeant Louise Pratt leads the investigation. The police track the false text messages, locate Finley’s Wagoneer, find the body, and execute a search warrant on Marlow Luckett’s property.

Finding the bloody duffel bag filled with cash, they arrest Marlow for Finley’s murder. Luke’s drug charges are dropped as blame shifts onto the deceased Finley.

On the LaSalle Street Bridge, Allison finally confesses the truth to Luke and Trinity: she cut Luke’s brakes in 1998, not Finley.

In the epilogue, Luke’s baseball team wins the Division III College World Series, and the siblings establish a fragile ceasefire as they begin to heal.
