Full Story Summary: The Anatomy of a Double Frame-Up

SPOILER WARNING: This section details the entire plot, including the ending.

The story begins when law professor Simon Dobias sees Lauren Betancourt, the woman who seduced his father, stole his family’s money, and caused his mother’s suicide, back in Chicago. This sparks a plan he has been perfecting for years.

Simon met his partner, Vicky Tremont, at a Survivors of Suicide support group. Vicky is not just grieving; she is furious. Her sister was conned and driven to suicide by a man named Nick Caracci, and Vicky wants him dead.

Together, they build an elaborate trap. Simon and Vicky create a fictional, text-based affair between Simon and Lauren using burner phones.

They carefully cultivate a digital trail of Cell-Site Location Information (CSLI) to convince any future investigator that the affair was real.

Vicky, posing as Simon’s wealthy wife “Vicky Lanier,” lures Nick into a scam. She convinces him she is about to receive twenty-one million dollars from a fictional trust on her upcoming anniversary.

To pressure Nick, Vicky shows him a fake divorce petition. She claims Simon found out about their affair and will divorce her the day before the anniversary, cutting off the money. This is the trigger Nick needs.

On Halloween night, Nick, disguised as the Grim Reaper, murders Lauren in her Grace Village mansion. Immediately after, Simon enters in a matching costume with larger boots. He leaves incriminating footprints and places Lauren’s pink burner phone for the police to find.

Simultaneously, Vicky visits Nick’s apartment. She drugs him and stages his suicide with his own gun, leaving his phone to send a final, pre-programmed message to Lauren’s phone.

The police investigation, led by Sergeant Jane Burke, finds the trail Simon and Vicky left. Jane, who knows Simon, suspects the truth but cannot prove it.

The physical evidence and CSLI data overwhelmingly point to a murder-suicide committed by Nick.

As a final masterstroke, Lauren’s fingerprints are entered into a federal database. This links her to the cold-case murder of Simon’s father in St. Louis, a crime Simon himself committed. The case is officially closed, blamed on the now-dead Lauren.

With their enemies eliminated, Simon and Vicky dismantle their plan. Simon donates his father’s twenty-million-dollar trust to various charities for victims of domestic violence and suicide. Vicky disappears to Wisconsin to live a quiet life with her family.

In the end, they share a final, quiet moment of closure in a snowy forest, their partnership concluded.
