Oathbound Book Summary: Tracy Deonn’s Legendborn Finale

TL;DR: The Short Version

Six seconds after Bree Matthews vanishes from a hilltop in Maryland, her friends find nothing but empty air.

Oathbound, the third book in Tracy Deonn’s Legendborn Cycle, opens on that disappearance and follows Bree into an unregulated bargain with the Shadow King, who wears the face of Mage Seneschal Erebus Varelian.

Severed from her ancestral stream and marked with a burning bloodmark, Bree trains far from everyone she loves while her memories are quietly edited away.

Nick Davis, Selwyn Kane, and the Rootcrafters each take separate, dangerous paths through Order politics and the reach of the Shadow Court. The novel resolves the trilogy’s central conflicts.

  • Bree Matthews makes a two-part demand of the Shadow King and ends up bound to him by an unregulated debt she cannot break.
  • She has burned her ancestral stream, cutting herself off from Arthur, Vera, and every ancestor — and fracturing her own soul in the process.
  • Nick Davis uses a formal curia to expose the Order’s racism and misogyny, and secretly carries a shard of the Shadow King’s crown in his chest.
  • Selwyn Kane, fully descended into demonia, is revealed to be the biological son of Arawn and the true heir to the Shadow Court.
  • Core themes include self-ownership, institutional corruption, grief, found family, and the reframing of monstrosity.

Oathbound Book Summary

Spoiler warning: the following section describes the plot in full, including the ending.

The Bargain in the Prologue

The book begins right after the battle at the Northern Keep. Bree Matthews calls on the Shadow King, who is inhabiting the body of Mage Seneschal Erebus Varelian, and makes two demands.

She wants Selwyn Kane delivered to his mother, Natasia, and she wants the Shadow King himself to teach her strength and control.

Erebus complies with the first demand but points out that she asked for two favors and received one. The imbalance creates an unregulated bargain, and he marks her sternum with a burning crimson bloodmark. Bree is forced to surrender Excalibur.

Untouchable

Nick Davis and William Sitterson arrive at the hilltop to find only empty air. To keep the High Council of Regents from replacing or executing him, Nick invokes a curia conventus, a legal council the Regents are Oathbound to answer.

He publicly confesses to killing Mageguard Maxwell Zhao, then uses the hearing to demand an independent quest against the rogue Morgaines rather than a search for Bree and Selwyn.

During the curia, Nick delivers a public indictment of the Order’s racism, misogyny, and reliance on child soldiers.

In secret, William meets Rootcrafters Valec, Lucille, and Mariah to place Bree’s comatose best friend, Alice Chen, in their care. Valec casts a mesmer on William to erase his memory of the Hunter’s role in Bree’s disappearance, preventing a suicidal rescue attempt.

Erebus, meanwhile, takes Bree to a farm outside Asheville, North Carolina, for punishing magic training. He tampers with her mind, erasing memories of her friends, her father Edwin, and her past. She is left with phantom emotions she cannot attach to anyone, though she does learn to forge an impenetrable aether shield.

Unstoppable

Months pass. Bree lives in a suburban house with Zoe and Elijah, incubus cambion twins and children of the Nightshade Ozyrus. Selwyn awakens at Natasia’s Appalachian cabin, fully descended into demonia and hungry for Bree’s magic.

Natasia records audio logs arguing that cambion demonia is a natural biological progression rather than a corruption. She also concludes that Bree is the Awakened Scion of Arthur and Selwyn’s sovereign king.

Erebus pushes Bree to search the memories of past Scions for his stolen crown. Bree reveals that she burned her ancestral stream before calling him, cutting herself off from Arthur, Vera, and all her ancestors. His primary plan fails, so he leans harder on the bloodmark.

To stop Erebus from hunting Rootcrafter girls, Bree works with Zoe and Elijah to trace the crown through rogue networks. They infiltrate the club of the Nightshade Daeza, where Bree binds her in bands of purple flame.

Daeza names the Shade broker Mikaelaz, who holds the crown at the Penumbra estate in Tennessee.

Impervious

Bree, Zoe, and Elijah attend Mikael’s auction at Penumbra as wealthy guests. Bree runs into Nick, William, Larkin, Mariah, and Ava, the Morgaine leader. Nick and Bree go undercover as an engaged couple named Benedict Pierce and Iris Bauer.

Nick reveals that his Lancelot inheritance grants enhanced vision, letting him see the molecular structure of magic and unmake it. He also admits that Ava embedded a shard of the Shadow King’s crown in his chest, so he can pull Arthur’s spirit into himself if the king ever tries to possess Bree again.

During Mikael’s communion ritual, Nick takes Bree’s place on stage. The Shade forces him to confess his guilt over leaving Bree and his realization that she and Selwyn shared a romantic bond while he was gone.

Erebus arrives at Penumbra and locks Bree, Nick, Zoe, and Mariah in the estate’s anti-demon dungeons. He reveals that he has been working with factional Regents and warlocks to harvest the blood of captured Rootcrafter girls, developing a serum meant to replicate and neutralize ancestral magic.

Ruthless and the Climax

Natasia Kane rescues Edwin Matthews from Erebus’s Mageguard units. Bree and her allies escape Penumbra and retreat to Valec’s fortified Crossroads Lounge.

Using his Sight, Valec examines Bree on stage and finds that burning her ancestral stream fractured her soul. A missing fragment is in Erebus’s possession, and Bree rebuilt the rest of herself through her drive to protect others.

Selwyn tracks the signature of Bree’s root magic across North Carolina and corners her and Nick on a mountain pass. Transformed by demonia, he still suppresses his violent urges when he sees her and admits his fixation on her.

At Penumbra, Bree confronts the Shadow King and turns the bloodmark’s two-way connection against him. She draws Arawn to his knees and demands her missing soul fragment. When he surrenders it, all of her erased memories flood back at once, restoring her history, her love for her father, her bond with Alice, and her connections to Nick and Selwyn.

Before Arawn can recover, Selwyn ambushes Erebus from above and severs his right hand with bolts of green aether. The Shadow King flees into the shadows.

Selwyn then grasps the recovered crown of the Shadow King. Neither the Morgaine anti-demon enchantment nor the crown’s lethal test kills him. Shadows erupt around him, his eyes boil red, and his fangs lengthen.

The living weapon of the Shadow Court recognizes its true blood heir — Selwyn Kane is the biological son of the Shadow King.

Oathbound Tracy Deonn Summary (1)

Quotes from Oathbound

“You said you would go with me and stay by my side if I performed a single favor, and yet you made not one but two demands of me, Briana… Two demands, and only one fulfilled. You owe me, Briana… We are as good as Oathbound, you and I.”

“Some oaths, Briana, we make to ourselves. And to no one else.”

“Briana Matthews cannot be the only voice that speaks against you. Not when she bears our burdens for us and goes so unprotected. Not when you erase her humanity to guard your own power and protect your own whiteness.”

“The Order was built on a scale of abuse I can’t even begin to comprehend, the weight of which you bear without your consent. Arthur is a weight you bear without your consent… I was born to thrive in this machine, Bree. It was built with me in mind. It’s my responsibility to take it apart.”

“You had to fail, Bree. You had to fall… Because you had to rise. A true leader has to know every side of her battle: the wins, the losses, the enemies, the allies, the good, and the bad.”

“You are yourself in full.”
