Seven Summers Summary: A Coastal Love Triangle

The Weight of a Seasonal Promise

Paige Toon’s Seven Summers opens in St. Agnes, Cornwall, where Olivia “Liv” Arterton has built a life around an unusual arrangement.

Every summer, her first love Finn returns from Los Angeles.

If both are single, they spend those months together, then cut off all contact when autumn arrives.

The rhythm works until a new guest, Tom Thornton, rents her cottage. His steady presence forces Liv to confront whether a love that only exists in summer can ever be enough.

TL;DR: Two Loves, One Choice

Liv’s seasonal bond with Finn is intense but built on grief and absence.

Tom offers permanence, honesty, and a shared life in Cornwall.

The novel moves between past summers and the present, showing how Liv’s artistic career, family duties, and romantic decisions unfold over fourteen years.

It ends with loss, healing, and a second chance.

Seven Summers Summary: A Life Across Fourteen Years

Contains spoilers.

Six summers before the present, Liv returns from Edinburgh to St. Agnes. She meets Finn at Seaglass during a Mixamatosis gig. Their connection is immediate.

The same summer, Liv’s parents die in a motorway crash. Finn stays to help with the funeral. Liv refuses to move to Los Angeles because of Michael. They make their summer-only promise.

Each following summer brings a version of the same pattern. Finn visits, they reconnect, and autumn separates them.

One summer, Finn does not come at all. He is living with pop star Brit Easton. Liv realizes she wants a partner who stays.

In the present summer, Tom Thornton books her downstairs flat. He is a sand artist and former Navy pilot. They grow close through music and quiet work at Seaglass.

Tom reveals he has Long QT Syndrome. He left flying and his previous relationship because of it. Liv accepts the condition and chooses a future with him.

At Dan and Amy’s wedding, Finn reappears. He asks Liv to move to Los Angeles or let him move to Cornwall. She says goodbye and stays with Tom.

The epilogue traces the next seven years. Tom proposes with a sand drawing. They marry. IVF fails three times. Tom dies from a cardiac arrest six summers later.

Seven summers after that, Finn returns. He supports Liv through grief. They eventually marry, have three children, and run Seaglass together. The novel ends with a new sand tree on the beach.

Who Should Read Seven Summers?

This book fits readers who enjoy coastal settings, emotionally layered romances, and narratives that span years rather than weeks. It centers on grief, artistic work, and family responsibility.

The reading experience is slow in places, especially during the past-summer sections, but the structure builds context for Liv’s final choice.

Readers comfortable with loss and medical conditions may connect most with the story.
