The Past: Friendship, Nevada
In 1998 and 1999, thirteen-year-old Summer Downey and her mother, Lorraine, leave California after Summer’s father dies of a drug overdose.
Lorraine drives them in an old Monte Carlo to Friendship, Nevada, a sun-bleached rest stop town marked by a thirty-foot saguaro known as “Charlie Cactus.”
There they join a communal arrangement at the Flatlands Women’s Correctional Facility, an abandoned prison repurposed into a self-contained compound. The community is governed by Taured, a charismatic leader who presents the group as a spiritual family.
Summer initially enjoys the farm chores and the social bustle of the compound. That changes when Taured institutes “Kids’ Camp,” separating children from their parents into dormitories under the premise of teaching spiritual independence.
Summer moves into Kids’ Camp and becomes best friends with Sara Browley, whose father, Dr. Tom Browley, serves as the compound’s physician.
Lorraine, meanwhile, grows suspicious of Taured’s strict rules, mandatory fasting, sleep deprivation, and psychological dominance.
Taured frequently sends Lorraine on multi-week “mission trips” to recruit members and raise funds. Summer overhears Taured discussing recruitment and other plans with his driver, Sammy.
She later sneaks into Taured’s RV and convertible, where she finds fake passports, expired driver’s licenses, a computer floppy disk, and a Polaroid photograph of Feena Wycliffe, an underage recruit, drugged and unclothed. Summer steals the items and buries them in a double-wrapped Ziploc bag beneath Charlie Cactus.
Recognizing the escalating danger, Lorraine secretly contacts her estranged parents for money and plans an escape. Mother and daughter slip past the compound gate and take a taxi to the Las Vegas airport.
Before entering the terminal, Lorraine discards a hidden handgun in a trash container. Taured tracks them down at the terminal, forces them into his BMW, and returns them to the compound.
As punishment, Summer is stripped to her underwear, publicly shamed before the elders, blasted with a high-pressure water hose over a courtyard drain, and locked in an isolation cell. Three days later she is brought to the chapel and discovers her mother’s funeral in progress.
Taured claims Lorraine died of an accidental drug overdose, but Summer knows her mother was injected and murdered. Taured then attempts to forge documents to assume legal guardianship of Summer and claim Lorraine’s life insurance policy.
During a police welfare check, Officer O’Connor notices Summer’s terror. Summer feigns a physical collapse, prompting law enforcement to call an ambulance and take her to a hospital.
She is placed in the custody of her maternal grandparents, Mark and Gilda. After graduating high school, Summer legally changes her name to Lorraine Ives, shortened to “Rainy,” and moves to New York.
She becomes a celebrated but reclusive sculptor, hiding her face from public media out of fear. Taured eventually discovers her artist pseudonym and mails threatening letters to her galleries signed, “Till He returns, Taured.”

The Present: Washington and Las Vegas
In present-day Washington, Rainy lives with her boyfriend Grant, an architect who purchased one of her metal sculptures. Grant encourages her to socialize with his friends’ wives: Braithe, Tara, Ursa, Mackenzie, and Viola.
The women invite Rainy on their annual girls’ trip to Las Vegas. Rainy hesitates because of her childhood trauma, but Grant secretly buys her plane ticket.
In Las Vegas, storms and group friction create an uneasy environment. Tara acts hostile toward Rainy, and an intimate party game triggers traumatic memories.
Braithe suddenly vanishes from the group, sending texts that claim she is leaving her husband, Stephen, after a psychic reading. Rainy then receives threatening messages from Braithe’s phone signed by “Paul.”
“Paul” reveals he has kidnapped Braithe and demands Rainy come to the Bellum Hotel alone, threatening to cut Braithe’s vocal cords or kill her if police are contacted.
Rainy deduces that “Paul” is actually Ginger, whose real name is Paul, a former Kids’ Camp boy at the compound who was abused by Taured. Ginger has become a serial killer targeting women Taured exploited, and he has already murdered Feena Wycliffe and Sara Browley.
Rainy travels to Friendship, Nevada, and unearths the Ziploc bag buried under Charlie Cactus twenty years earlier, retrieving the original floppy disk and photographs. She leaves evidence for police by writing details on a fifty-dollar bill given to a Quick Mart clerk and leaving a note on a hotel buffet placard.
She also sends an email to Taured’s old journal submission address, baiting him to Las Vegas by reporting that she is being held by a man with a broken nose.
Rainy enters an under-construction restaurant wing at the Bellum Hotel where Ginger holds Braithe captive. She confronts Ginger and breaks his nose in a physical struggle before he strikes Braithe unconscious with a gold hammer.
Taured arrives after receiving Rainy’s email and engages in a violent fight with Ginger. Taured overpowers and brutally kills Ginger.
Taured then turns on Rainy, planning to reassert control over her. Rainy pretends to submit, offers to cook steaks, and secretly drugs his wine with crushed quaaludes.
As the drugs incapacitate Taured and heavy smoke from the steaks triggers the fire alarm, Rainy shoves him onto the red-hot commercial kitchen grill. Taured burns severely and dies on the grill.
Emergency responders rescue Rainy and Braithe, and the recovered evidence leads law enforcement to dismantle Taured’s nationwide cult network, called Tauredia.

Epilogue
Months later, Rainy is married to Grant and living in New York. She meets with Braithe, who has divorced Stephen, cut her hair into a bob, and started living independently in New York.
