The Book Tour Summary: A Witty Rivals-to-Lovers Romance

A Book Tour, a Grudge, and One Unavoidable Publicist

Ana Movilian built a career telling other people they were enough.

Her podcast and debut book, So Proud of You, speak directly to anyone raised in a high-expectation, low-praise household.

Then her publicist quits on publication day, and the one person she cannot stand steps in to run her national tour.

The Book Tour by Emily Ohanjanians follows Ana and Ryan Grant, the reserved publicity director she privately calls “the Storm Cloud,” across a two-week, multi-city promotional run.

The novel moves through bookstores, conference stages, and hotel bars while Ana confronts grief she has spent years outrunning.

It is a contemporary romance about performance, family duty, and what happens when the mask slips.

The Book Tour Summary: The Full Story (Spoilers Ahead)

Spoiler warning: this section describes the plot in full, including the ending.

Ana Movilian left her Harvard medical residency in her second year after her father, Hrant, died of a heart attack. She built So Proud of You, a podcast and video brand aimed at people raised in high-expectation, low-praise households. On publication day, her book lands respectful reviews alongside condescending ones in LitCrit and Talon magazine.

Ana blames Ryan Grant for the Talon piece. The Woodsworth Press publicity director seemed dismissive during their early meetings, and the article was written by his college friend Daniel Fox. At her launch event at The Strand in New York, her lead publicist Meredith announces she has taken a job at Burton Publishing.

Ryan steps in as her on-tour publicist, and the tour begins in Chicago. A fire at a neighboring dry cleaner closes Prologue Bookstore, so Ryan relocates the reading to Elevate Books. There, an elitist attendee calls Ana’s work meaningless influencer fluff during the Q&A.

Ryan defends her, telling the room that her work makes people feel less alone and gives them hope. Later that night, he brings her deep-dish pizza and admits he has listened to all 337 episodes of her podcast. He also reveals he is secretly writing a commercial sci-fi novel about lovers separated in the multiverse.

In Seattle, Ana delivers a keynote at the First Women Conference. Over late-night drinks in Belltown, Ryan explains that his media pitches were meant to widen her audience and that he cut ties with Daniel Fox over the hit piece. He also clarifies that “Celine,” whose heart-emoji texts Ana misread, is his younger sister.

After stops at Powell’s in Portland and City Lights in San Francisco, Ana runs into Ryan and Celine near a warehouse signing. Celine invites her to speak at UC Berkeley’s Women of the Future student association. On the train to Berkeley, Ryan describes raising Celine after their father left.

He took corporate “golden handcuffs” at Woodsworth because the company covers half of Celine’s tuition. Ana begins to see his reserve as selflessness rather than coldness. After the student mixer, they kiss on the street.

The next morning in San Francisco, they act on their attraction. Hours later, Meredith calls to say So Proud of You has hit the New York Times bestseller list. Ana kisses Ryan in a backstage hallway, and a passerby photographs them.

The photo goes viral as “Kissgate,” bringing online slut-shaming, an internal HR investigation into Ryan for client-publicist boundary violations, and the postponement of a talk show deal with producer Craig Waters. Frightened of emotional exposure and of costing Ryan his job, Ana retreats into her hyper-positive public persona.

The tour’s final stop is Boston, where Ana’s traditional mother, Mayrik, attends the event at More Than Words Bookstore. She makes passive-aggressive remarks about Ana abandoning medicine, and Ryan gently intervenes on Ana’s behalf.

In a parking alleyway outside, Ana breaks down. She confesses that when her father died during her residency, her ex-boyfriend Nathan left the moment she showed grief. Convinced Ryan will do the same, she tries to end things to protect his career.

Back in New York, Ana learns two things at once: Meredith says Ryan has resigned from Woodsworth, and her cousin Maral has accepted an urban planning job in Boston. Ana falls apart in her apartment, and Maral confronts her about her toxic positivity.

Celine then calls to correct the record. Ryan was not fired. He resigned voluntarily and took a strategy role at Merit, which has offices in New York and Los Angeles, pays well, and frees him from boundary conflicts so he can finish his novel and pursue Ana openly.

Ana rushes to the Infinitude Symposium at the Marriott Marquis. She abandons her prepared remarks and speaks into the microphone about rejecting impossible family expectations and naming her own emotional needs. She publicly declares her love for Ryan, who walks into the back of the ballroom. Ana steps off the stage into his arms, and they reconcile amid applause.

Two years later, they live together in New York. Ryan’s multiverse romance has become an international bestseller with foreign rights auctions in Frankfurt, and Celine has graduated.

Maral is thriving in environmental engineering in Boston while keeping daily FaceTime calls with Ana. Ana is publishing a deeply personal second book with Woodsworth, living what the epilogue frames as an authentic and integrated life.

Quotes from The Book Tour

“Capable women are both overestimated and underestimated all our lives. A truth perhaps universally unacknowledged, but evident in some form or other at our every turn.”

“Her work makes people feel less alone in a lonely world, empowers them to take emotional control of their lives, gives them hope where it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find. If that doesn’t matter, I don’t know what does.”

“Writing is…who I am… It taps into the part of me that feels the most real… There are no airs, no expectations or restrictions. I don’t feel hemmed in—I can just be myself. It’s the only thing I do that’s just for me.”

“You are…a force. In the best possible way. Which is why I thought you should include more of yourself in the book.”

“I didn’t want it to seem like I had an agenda for coming on the tour, other than serving your book.”

“You make people feel seen, made me feel seen in a way I hadn’t before. The pressure, the loneliness, put into words and validated. Yet you so rarely shared about yourself, and all I wanted was to know you. The you that’s inside this perfect exterior.”

“This is my life. If I could have it all, of course I’d want to meet their expectations. But if that means veering off the path to my own happiness, I’m not willing to do that. Even if that means disappointing them.”
