While examining Emma’s effects, Wren discovers a silver bracelet with an anatomical heart charm engraved with “E.” Wren breaks down—seven years ago, Wren Muller was Emily Maloney. She had been abducted, hunted, and left for dead by her lab partner “Cal.”

Wren survived by using Katie’s body to bypass the electrified fence. She ran for miles, changed her name to Wren after the resilient bird, married Richard, and became a medical examiner. The Butcher’s recent spree was a campaign to reclaim his escaped prey.

Wren reveals her secret past to Leroux. The library card name Philip Trudeau—Jeremy’s childhood friend—helps Leroux identify the killer as Jeremy Calvin Rose. Wren realizes Jeremy murdered his mother, Mona Louise Rose, two years prior using hemlock in her wine.

Jeremy sneaks into Wren’s home while she is away. He steals her grandmother’s diamond ring and leaves it on his coffee table at 35 Evangeline Road as a message: “Welcome back, Emily.”

In the swamp behind the house, Jeremy ambushes the police. He shoots Leroux in the calf with a crossbow arrow and kills another officer. Wren grabs Leroux’s gun and confronts Jeremy. Detective Will Broussard fires into Jeremy’s chest, but Jeremy wears a bulletproof vest.

Jeremy slips into the underbrush, executes a stranger, and stages the scene to look like suicide. Wren inspects the corpse and notices green eyes instead of Jeremy’s blue eyes and no chest wound.
