In The Golden Compass, Philip Pullman places the reader in a world where every human has a physical daemon companion. Childrenās daemons change shape freely, while adult daemons settle into one form.
The powerful religious body called the Magisterium controls society and fears the celestial particles known as Dust.
Lyra Belacqua lives as an orphaned ward at Jordan College in Oxford. She spends her days running across roofs with Roger Parslow, the kitchen boy.
When her uncle Lord Asriel arrives, Lyra saves him from poisoned Tokay wine and secretly watches him present photographs of Dust and a city in the sky to the Scholars.
After that, children begin disappearing. A boy named Tony Makarios is lured away by Mrs. Coulter, a glamorous scholar. Roger is also taken.
Mrs. Coulter arrives at Jordan College and offers to make Lyra her assistant. Before Lyra leaves, the Master gives her a golden alethiometer and warns her to hide it from Mrs. Coulter.
In London, Lyra learns that Mrs. Coulter runs the General Oblation Board, known as the Gobblers. Mrs. Coulterās golden monkey daemon attacks Lyraās daemon Pantalaimon. Lyra flees into the streets, where the gyptians rescue her from child-snatchers.
The gyptians take Lyra to the fens.
There she learns that Lord Asriel is her father and Mrs. Coulter is her mother. Farder Coram teaches her about the alethiometer, and she discovers she can read its symbols without the standard books. King John Faa decides to lead a rescue expedition to the North.
In Trollesund, Lyra helps the outcast armored bear Iorek Byrnison recover his stolen armor. The expedition also recruits the Texan aeronaut Lee Scoresby. The witches, led by Serafina Pekkala, guide them north.
Lyra finds the severed boy Tony Makarios in a village.
His daemon has been cut away. The group is ambushed, and Lyra is captured and taken to the Bolvangar station. There she poses as a lost girl named Lizzie Brooks, finds Roger, and sees the silver guillotine used to sever children from their daemons.
She frees the caged daemons and nearly faces the guillotine herself. Mrs. Coulter stops the procedure, but Lyra escapes with Roger and the other children after triggering an explosion. A battle breaks out between the Tartar guards, gyptians, Iorek, and the witches. Lyra, Roger, and Iorek escape in Lee Scoresbyās balloon.
The balloon is attacked by cliff-ghasts. Lyra falls into the snow and is captured by armored bears
. She is taken to the palace of Iofur Raknison, the usurper bear-king. Lyra tricks Iofur by claiming she is Iorekās daemon. Iorek arrives, fights Iofur, and kills him, reclaiming the Svalbard throne.
Iorek escorts Lyra and Roger to Lord Asrielās mountain laboratory. Asriel reveals that Dust is original sin and that he plans to build a bridge to a parallel universe. He needs a child to sever from a daemon to release enough energy.
Asriel drags Roger to the cliffside and performs intercision on him. The energy tears open a portal in the sky, and Roger dies. Mrs. Coulter arrives and embraces Asriel, but she refuses to follow him into the other world.
Lyra and Pantalaimon mourn Roger.
She concludes that if the corrupt adults fear Dust, then Dust must be good. Lyra and Pantalaimon step through the glowing rift into the unknown sky as the first book ends.
