Twelve Months Summary: The Deep Dive

Spoilers ahead. The book opens in a Chicago still reeling from the Eye of Balor’s EMP. Cars are dead. Lights are out. Ghouls hunt in the dark.

Harry Dresden lives in a stone castle with thirty refugees. He sleeps ninety minutes a night. He wakes up screaming.

Mab, Queen of Air and Darkness, drops a political bomb. Harry must marry Lara Raith, White Court vampire queen, in exactly one year.

To publicize the alliance, they must go on monthly dates.

The first date at McAnally’s Pub yields resources. Lara sends a Valkyrie bodyguard named Bear and a doctor for the sick children.

Mort Lindquist brings Fitz, a street kid whose magical talent exploded. Harry takes him as an apprentice. On the second date, Harry takes Lara to Demonreach.

Thomas Raith’s projection warns that his Hunger still devours him. Justine is possessed by Nemesis. King Etri of the Svartalves demands Thomas’s head for a life-debt.

Harry has one year to prove innocence or face war.

Carlos Ramirez visits with Warden Astinova. Black magic pings are coming from Chicago. Harry draws hard boundaries with the Council. Ghouls kidnap refugees.

Harry, Bear, and Fitz hunt them. Harry’s magic fails during the ambush. The Brotherhood of St. Brigid, led by Daniel Carpenter, saves them.

Over winter, Brotherhood members suffer a black magic curse. Harry traces it to Bock Ordered Books.

Artemis Bock and Ordo Lebes members were defending themselves against rogue Brotherhood beatings. Harry stops the ritual and confiscates the spellbook.

In February, Harry tests a greater magic circle on Lara at Demonreach. He can feed her Hunger with raw energy. The test succeeds, but Mab reveals the trap. Lara’s Hunger is now addicted to Harry’s Starborn life force. Harry tells Lara the truth. They soulgaze and form a real alliance.

Harry summons Mab and uses his boon. The ritual on Demonreach saves Thomas. Justine, pregnant and possessed, goes into labor. Mother Summer delivers a baby boy.

Mab takes the child as payment for Etri’s dead retainer. Thomas yields his son tearfully. Justine stays for treatment.

In May, Lord Raith’s plot erupts. Protesters besiege Harry’s castle as human shields. Malvora vampires, ghouls, and Black Court Renfields attack. Black Court elders arrive at sundown.

Harry channels ley lines and summons a storm. Ramirez kills Cleopatra. Harry crushes the elders inside the gates.
