Prologue: Elspeth — The Dark Sea
Prologue
Elspeth exists in a state of suspended animation, floating within a dark, salted sea inside her own mind.
Time has no mark here, and she is empty of memory, pain, or hope until a persistent thought urges her to be let out.
She spots a black beach where an aged man in golden armor stands watching her approach with the tide.
As she struggles to reach the shore, the man pulls her from the water and carries her onto the black sand.
He reveals that he knows her name, calling her Elspeth Spindle, and notes that he has been waiting for her.
His strange, yellow eyes seem to ensnare her gaze, marking the beginning of her awareness within the Shepherd King’s mental sanctuary.
Part I: To Bleed
Chapter 1: Ravyn — The Grave at Castle Yew
Ravyn uses his Mirror Card to become invisible while digging into the hardened soil of an ancient chamber at Castle Yew.
His hands bleed as he unearths an ornate forged steel sword and the skeletal remains of a human spine.
Disturbed by the discovery, he flees the chamber and encounters the spirit of a young girl named Tilly perched in a yew tree.
Tilly possesses the same vivid yellow eyes as the Shepherd King and identifies him as her father.
She explains that the first Rowan King, Brutus, was responsible for the deaths of the Shepherd King’s children.
Tilly tells Ravyn that the Shepherd King seeks balance and his due from the Rowans.

Chapter 2: Elm — The Silent House
Prince Elm rides ahead of his fellow Destriers to search Hawthorn House for Elspeth’s missing family members.
He finds the estate moss-covered and eerily silent, where he is startled by Ione Hawthorn, who is still using the Maiden Card.
Destriers Gorse and Wicker arrive and want to arrest Ione, but Elm uses his Scythe Card to compel them to ignore her.
Ione remains uncannily calm due to the pink Card’s effects and questions Elm about Elspeth’s fate.
She notes that she had seen Elspeth’s eyes flash yellow like dragon’s gold.
Elm denies knowing anything about it to protect his own treasonous secrets.
Chapter 3: Elspeth — The Beach of Shadows
Elspeth sits on the black sand with the man in golden armor, who identifies himself as Aemmory Percyval Taxus.
He tells her that there is little else to do on this shore but remember her past.
Taxus vanishes intermittently, leaving no footprints in the sand, while Elspeth remains in a state where she does not eat or sleep.
The nothingness feels cavernous as she realizes she has lost almost all of her memories.
When Taxus returns, he offers to tell her the story of the girl, the King, and the monster they became.
This rhyme serves as a tether to her identity and the bargain they have struck.
Chapter 4: Ravyn — The Monster’s Terms
Ravyn enters the dungeon at Stone to retrieve the Shepherd King for an inquest with King Rowan.
He finds Elspeth’s body now fully possessed by the Nightmare with catlike yellow eyes.
Ravyn uses his Nightmare Card to search for Elspeth’s mind but finds only darkness.
The Shepherd King agrees to lead Ravyn to the Twin Alders Card, noting the journey requires three barters.
Ravyn demands the Nightmare not harm the King during their meeting to ensure they can leave Stone safely.
As they walk, the Nightmare mocks Ravyn’s feelings for Elspeth, claiming she is hidden in a “place of rest” within his mind.
Ravyn vows to reach her despite the Nightmare’s threats and secrets.
Chapter 5: Elm — The Cost of the Road
During the ride to Stone, Elm and Ione are ambushed by three masked highwaymen blocking the forest road.
Ione stealthily steals Elm’s Scythe Card from his pocket while he has his hands raised in surrender.
She uses the Scythe to compel the archer to shoot his own companion in the throat.
In the ensuing chaos, Elm uses his Black Horse Card to brutally beat the second highwayman with his bare fists.
The third highwayman commits suicide by driving an arrow into his own jaw in panic.
Afterward, Ione refuses to return the Scythe until Elm promises to convince the King to give her free rein of the castle.
Elm reluctantly agrees to the barter to end the pain of the Card’s negative effects.
Chapter 6: Elspeth — Fragments of a Life
Elspeth begins to regain sensory memories of her past, such as the smell of herbs and the touch of velvet.
She feels the absence of the Shepherd King’s voice in her head, comparing it to an unfilled grave.
Taxus visits her again, telling her she is in a place to recover and will be safe for now.
Elspeth pleads to be let out, but he tells her only “soon” before vanishing again.
In his absence, she pieces together the names of her family members like Erik, Tyrn, and Opal.
She recalls a rhyme about the “yellow girl” who would not be Queen, identifying her cousin Ione.
Chapter 7: Elm — A Refuge in the Storm
Elm and Ione arrive at Stone in a freezing storm, with Ione suffering from severe cold.
On the stairs, Royce Linden questions why Ione is not being taken to the dungeon.
Elm lies and rushes Ione to his private bedchamber to warm her, helping her undress from her ruined gown.
He notices Ione’s unreadable expression and wonders what the Maiden Card has left her capable of feeling.
Ravyn uses his Nightmare magic to speak into Elm’s mind, asking for his location.
Ione comments on the lack of women’s garments in Elm’s room, noting he is different from Hauth.
Ravyn then bursts into the room, surprised to find Ione there.
Chapter 8: Ravyn — The Mask of the Captain
Ravyn is shocked and angered to find Ione in Elm’s room, as she was supposed to have fled with the rest of her family.
Elm explains the highwayman attack, but Ravyn is focused on the upcoming inquest.
Ravyn uses his Nightmare Card to privately scold Elm for not using his Scythe to make Ione disappear.
Elm reveals that Ione saved his life and that he owes her a debt.
Ravyn warns Elm not to be swayed by her beauty, as she will likely die by the King’s command.
He resolves to wear his “Captain” mask of cold indifference to regain the King’s trust.
Chapter 9: Elm — The Trial of Truth
The inquest begins in the throne room with King Rowan presiding over the trial.
The King sentences Elspeth to death for treason and summons Erik Spindle and Tyrn Hawthorn to testify under the Chalice.
Elm, desperate to save Ione, uses his Scythe to compel Tyrn Hawthorn to give a testimony that shifts blame to the King and Hauth.
The false testimony enrages Erik Spindle, who attacks Tyrn with a dagger after breaking his chains.
In the melee, Ione’s hands are deeply slashed by the blade, and Elm rushes to her side.
Elm uses his Scythe to freeze the entire room in a stasis of ice to stop the violence.
He stands over the frozen court with blood dripping from his own nose.
Chapter 10: Elspeth — The Children of the King
Elspeth experiences fresh memories of her time with Ravyn, recalling the feel of his calloused hands and his heartbeats.
She meets the spirit girl Tilly again, who invites her to swing in a yew tree that isn’t there on the empty beach.
Other children with yellow eyes emerge from the darkness, though they leave no footprints in the sand.
The eldest boy, Bennett, has gray eyes and looks into Elspeth’s face with a sigh.
He asks why his father is “never really here” despite being with them.
Elspeth begins to understand she is witnessing the fractured family of the Shepherd King.
Chapter 11: Ravyn — The King’s Command
Physician Willow stitches Ravyn’s head wound in the King’s overheated chambers.
King Rowan is in a drunken rage, blaming Ravyn and Elm for their “abhorrent ineptitude” regarding Elspeth.
The King orders everyone out so he can speak to Ravyn alone about his desire for control rather than violence.
He allows Ione to stay in the castle only to prevent court gossip about the Spindle treachery.
The King commands Ravyn to follow Elspeth into the mist to find the Twin Alders Card.
He then plans to bring her back for execution on Solstice and refuses to let Elm join the quest.
Chapter 12: Elm — The Secret of the Maiden
Elm finds Physician Willow and asks about Ione’s maimed hands, but Willow claims they were perfectly intact.
Elm checks his own clothes and finds two bloody handprints, confirming the injury was real.
He uses a key to enter Ione’s locked room and finds her waiting for him in the shadows.
Ione is furious that Elm used his Scythe on her father, but Elm explains it was to save her.
He forces her to show him her hands, only to find they have been completely healed without a single scar.
Ione reveals the Maiden Card can heal the user and that she returned to Stone specifically to retrieve hers.
Elm realizes Hauth must know this secret and decides they must find Ione’s Card before Hauth can use it.
Chapter 13: Elspeth — Despair in the Dark
Elspeth is overwhelmed by the weight of her memories and screams at the Nightmare to let her out.
She learns the names of the spirit children: Tilly, Ilyc, Afton, Fenly, and Lenor.
The children speak to her as if she is their father, displaying their own past desires for Providence Cards.
Elspeth realizes she is trapped in the Shepherd King’s “dark-sanded oblivion” where his secrets are kept.
She feels deep guilt for her family’s potential death and the Yews’ lost hope for Emory.
Determined not to be forgotten, she walks into the breaking waves and swims until her muscles give out.
Chapter 14: Ravyn — A Final Farewell
Ravyn uses his Nightmare Card to tell Jespyr that they are leaving for the Twin Alders quest at dawn.
He enters Emory’s chamber and finds the boy shivering and in the late stages of degeneration.
When Ravyn accidentally touches Emory’s skin, the boy’s gray eyes roll back as he enters a magical trance.
Emory delivers a cryptic prophecy about a “dark bird with three heads” and asks Ravyn if he knows his own name.
After the vision, Emory has no memory of what he said and is physically weakened by the effort.
Ravyn carries his sleeping brother to Jespyr so they can go home to Castle Yew.
Chapter 15: Elm — The Cell of the Nightmare
Elm and Ione sneak down the icy dungeon stairs to visit Elspeth’s cell, teetering between flirting and tension.
They reach the cell and find the Shepherd King, who recognizes Elm and speaks with an oily, sinister voice.
Ione touches the creature’s cheek and realizes with horror that it is not her cousin anymore.
The Shepherd King tells Ione that the Maiden Card is protecting her from the despair of her situation.
He reveals that there are three Maiden Cards hidden within Stone but refuses to give their exact locations.
Elm vows to help Ione find her choice again, even though he previously treated Elspeth with contempt.
Chapter 16: Ravyn — The Shortened Plait
Ravyn uses his Mirror Card to hide while watching Elm and Ione leave the dungeon together.
He realizes Elm has developed feelings for Ione and the Nightmare mocks him for his disapproval.
The Nightmare recites a poem about the “elm tree” and hints he will need Elm for his future plans.
Ravyn leaves the castle keys for Elm and sets out for Castle Yew with Gorse and the Nightmare.
He notices the Nightmare has cut Elspeth’s hair short with scissors and feels a surge of violent rage.
Ravyn rips a Black Horse tapestry from the wall in his fury before leading the party out of Stone.
Part II: To Barter
Chapter 17: Elspeth — The King’s First Barter
Elspeth drifts through the Shepherd King’s memories and sees him as a young boy named Taxus in the wood.
He stands with others asking the Spirit for blessings, but he is the only one who can truly hear the trees.
His veins turn black with the fever, and the trees point him toward his father’s castle.
When he reaches the meadow, a stone appears with a sword bearing a shepherd’s staff on the hilt.
Taxus realizes he has been chosen by the Spirit for a specific purpose.
This memory explains his transformation from a boy into the man who would forge the Deck.
Chapter 18: Elm — The Burden of the Heir
Elm watches the quest party ride away and argues with his father on the drawbridge.
The King reveals that Hauth’s injuries are permanent and he will never sire an heir, making Elm the new successor.
Elm is horrified and refuses the throne, but his father insists he must take Hauth’s place.
The King orders Elm to resign as a Destrier and prepare to choose a wife at upcoming feasts.
Elm wakes from a nap and finds Ione Hawthorn guarded by Linden and Moss in the royal corridor.
He dismisses the guards and takes Ione to dinner, forcing her to sit in Hauth’s vacant chair.
Chapter 19: Ravyn — The Crown in the Grass
Ravyn’s party arrives at Castle Yew in record time, and he reunites with his parents.
He recruits his trusted highwaymen, Petyr and Wik Ivy, to join the quest for the Twin Alders Card.
Ravyn finds the Nightmare sitting in the meadow, cradling a golden crown depicting twisted branches.
The Nightmare demands his sword back and warns Ravyn against using the Mirror Card to see spirits.
He hints at a vast plan for the Rowans and requests Ravyn bring the Maiden Card on the journey.
When Ravyn tries to reach Elspeth’s mind, the Nightmare shoves him to the ground and threatens him with his sword.
Chapter 20: Elm — The Game of Truths
Ione rips her restrictive dress collar in the yard and encourages Elm to let his anger out.
They make a wager involving a kiss and a minute with the Scythe Card, then go to the cellar to play a truth-telling game.
Ione reveals that Hauth used his Scythe to make her hide her Card and stay numb.
Elm confesses his own childhood trauma and how Ravyn eventually saved him from Hauth.
They realize they are both “the same kind of wicked” and share an intense attraction.
The game ends with Ione winning the wager and Elm kissing her passionately on the cellar floor.
Chapter 21: Elspeth — The Coronation of Taxus
Elspeth witnesses Taxus’s coronation day through his memories, standing with his sister Ayris.
Taxus feels that wearing the crown is an act of providence and notes a young Rowan guard named Brutus winking at them.
He takes his seat in a throne forged of bent trees as the court cheers for the Shepherd King.
The memory is abruptly cut short as Elspeth hears the Nightmare calling her name with increasing desperation.
She tries to reach his voice, but the net of memories holds her fast.
Chapter 22: Ravyn — The Shifting Forest
The party departs Castle Yew at dawn, and the Nightmare uses his sword and magic name “Taxus” to command the forest.
The ground rolls and trees rearrange themselves to reveal a path through the previously impenetrable yew wood.
As they walk, Ravyn realizes the Shepherd King’s mind is screaming for Elspeth.
They reach a dark, mirrored lake that the Nightmare says requires a blood barter to cross.
The party members bleed into the water, and Ravyn sees a vision of his highwayman self in the reflection.
They dive into the water as wolves begin to howl at their backs.
Chapter 23: Elspeth — A Choosing of Wills
Elspeth moves within the dark waters of her mind after hearing Taxus call to her in a rhyme.
He pulls her to the surface and holds her like a child, warning her of the consequences of returning to his conscious mind.
He explains that she will see what he sees but have no control over her body.
Elspeth hears Ravyn’s voice calling for help in the real world and grows desperate to assist.
Despite the warning that his mind is “monstrous,” Elspeth reaches for Taxus’s hand.
She utters her final words on that shore: “Let. Me. Out.”
Chapter 24: Ravyn — The Poisoned Lake
Ravyn pulls Petyr from the lake after he is attacked by a monster with Petyr’s own face.
Petyr’s leg is severely mauled, and the Nightmare realizes there is poison in the water.
The Nightmare tells Ravyn to use the Maiden Card on Petyr, which miraculously heals the wound without a scar.
Ravyn uses his Nightmare Card to speak to Elspeth and hears her voice for the first time in weeks.
The Nightmare quickly shuts him out, leading to a physical confrontation in the mud.
Gorse observes Ravyn’s rare Cards and becomes suspicious of his loyalty to the King.
Chapter 25: Elm — The Record Chamber
Elm discusses the Maiden Card’s potential to heal Hauth with Filick Willow in the library.
He draws a portrait of Ione while realizing he must eventually take the throne to prevent Hauth’s return to power.
Elm steals the King’s ring of keys from Baldwyn and breaks into the record chamber.
He discovers the specific wording of Ione’s marriage contract, which binds her to “the heir” rather than Hauth specifically.
Elm smiles as he realizes this provides a legal loophole for him to marry her instead.
Chapter 26: Elspeth — A Moment of Connection
Elspeth observes the party through the Nightmare’s eyes and finds Ravyn beautiful but strained.
The Nightmare mocks Ravyn by speaking Elspeth’s thoughts aloud, further irritating the Captain.
Ravyn realizes Elspeth can see him and uses his Nightmare Card to speak with her directly.
Elspeth tells him not to blame himself for being late at Spindle House, and Ravyn vows they will get their time together.
The Nightmare abruptly ends the connection, and the party is ambushed by arrows tipped with sweet-smelling smoke.
Wik is killed by an arrow to the skull, and the Nightmare loses consciousness.
Chapter 27: Elm — The Bargain with a King
Elm attends a feast and barters with his drunken father for a written testament naming him heir in exchange for choosing a wife.
The King agrees to honor any marriage contract Elm strikes as long as the chosen bride was invited to the feasts.
Elm finds Royce Linden bullying Ione in the corridor and uses his Scythe to humiliate him.
He warns Linden never to touch Ione again or he will end him.
Elm tells Ione he has been to Castle Yew and apologizes for not helping her search.
They resolve to keep looking for her Maiden Card using other magic.
Chapter 28: Elspeth — The Soul’s Price
While unconscious, the Nightmare experiences memories of his early reign, creating flower crowns for Tilly.
He discusses the degenerative nature of magic with the trees, who tell him he must bleed and barter to make magic safer.
He practices combat with Brutus Rowan using the Black Horse Card and begins forging more Providence Cards.
Taxus creates the Maiden Card to help Tilly heal without damaging her own body.
He eventually forges the Scythe Cards and gives one to Brutus to keep order.
Finally, he barters his own soul to the Spirit of the Wood to create the Nightmare Card, and the mist arrives for the first time.
Chapter 29: Ravyn — The Fort of Outcasts
Ravyn wakes up tied to a wooden post in a courtyard belonging to infected outcasts.
The leaders, sisters Otho and Hesis, wear bone masks and have stolen the party’s Providence Cards.
They do not believe Ravyn is infected and force the Destriers into a blood sport using magical smoke to induce rage.
In this state, Ravyn brutally fights and kills Gorse, crushing his windpipe.
Opal Hawthorn arrives and stops the violence, revealing she is living at the fort with her sons.
Ravyn recovers his Cards and leads the party out after the Nightmare disables Hesis.
Chapter 30: Elm — The Vaults of Stone
Elm and Ione explore the dark catacombs and vaults beneath Stone.
Elm uses his key to open the King’s private Card box and searches for Ione’s Maiden Card.
Ione finds a Maiden Card in the box, but it is the wrong one, proving it is not hers.
Elm retrieves a Prophet and Mirror Card from the vaults to aid their search.
Ione uses the Prophet Card and sees a vision of Solstice in a meadow with the Twin Alders.
Chapter 31: Ravyn — The Sacrifice of the Charm
The party reaches a dense wall of alder trees that will not grant entry unless paid with a magical charm.
Jespyr volunteers to give up her dog-tooth charm despite Ravyn’s desperate protests.
She shoves her charm into a hole in an alder tree, and the wood opens a path for her.
Jespyr immediately begins to feel the effects of the mist and runs into the dark forest.
The Nightmare tends to Ravyn’s broken nose, using the pain to help him access the Nightmare Card.
Ravyn speaks to Elspeth and they share a moment of comfort amidst the agony.
Chapter 32: Elm — The Visions of Equinox
At a Providence Card-themed feast, Elm uses the Nightmare Card to enter Ione’s mind and witness her memories of Equinox.
He sees Hauth bullying her and discovers a memory where Hauth pushed Ione out of a high window at Spindle House.
Ione’s bones shattered on impact, but the Maiden healed her, teaching her the true extent of the Card’s power.
Elm realizes Hauth hid Ione’s Maiden Card behind a pale stone in the throne room’s hearth.
They find the Card along with Hauth’s torture weapons, and Elm realizes Ione could be Queen of his reformed kingdom.
Ione releases the Maiden Card’s magic, revealing her true, freckled self.
Chapter 33: Elspeth — The Loss of Ayris
Elspeth witnesses the memory of Taxus receiving the twelfth Card, the Twin Alders, and discovering he cannot use any of the Cards he forged.
Brutus Rowan confronts him about the spreading mist, but Taxus refuses to let his guard harm those with the fever.
Taxus realizes Brutus has been using the Scythe to punish criminals and threatens to take it back.
Bennett visits his father and notes that he is “never really here” anymore.
Taxus takes his sister Ayris into the alderwood to speak with the Spirit.
The mist immediately claims Ayris, and the warmth of the sun is snuffed out within her.
Chapter 34: Elm — The King’s Experiment
Elm and Ione learn that High Prince Hauth has woken up miraculously healed by a Maiden Card.
Hauth stabs Ione through the heart with a dagger to “conduct an experiment” on the Card’s limitations.
Ione dies and remains still for two minutes while Elm screams in agony.
However, her body eventually revives and heals the wound, proving the Maiden Card provides a form of invincibility.
The King arrives and rejoices at Hauth’s recovery, unaware of the violence that just occurred.
Hauth decides to host a feast in his own honor that night.
Chapter 35: Ravyn — The Entry into Alderwood
Ravyn’s party waits at the edge of the alderwood for a month after Jespyr enters.
When they finally exit the wood, they realize they have traveled through time and it is now Solstice.
They race toward Castle Yew and find it abandoned and cold.
They meet Ione Hawthorn and Petyr on the forest road.
Ione reveals that Hauth has murdered the King and taken Elm hostage at Stone.
They coordinate their plans to confront Hauth and unite the Deck before midnight.
Chapter 36: Elm — A Hundred Years
Elm and Ione spend a night together where Elm reveals his traumatic childhood and his love for her.
He tells her about the loophole in the marriage contract and his desire to change Blunder as its next King.
They share a tender moment before returning to Stone, where Elm finds Hauth waiting in his chamber, fully recovered and menacing.
Hauth reveals he has framed Elm for the King’s death.
Elm manages to escape Stone with Ione, giving her his Scythe Card and telling her to find Ravyn.
He remains behind to face his brother, ending up in the frosted dungeon once again.
Chapter 37: Elspeth — The Valley of Bones
Elspeth and the Nightmare chase Jespyr through the ravenous alderwood, passing through a valley of bones and corpses.
They reach the Twin Alders trees on a hilltop, where Jespyr lies infected by inky magic.
The alder trees trap Ravyn and demand his blood and an answer to their riddle.
The Nightmare chooses to help Ravyn instead of resigning him to his fate.
He cuts Jespyr free from the roots and hands Ravyn through a closing doorway between the trees.
They fall onto a pale shore together, reaching the Spirit’s domain.
Chapter 38: Elm — The Return to Self
Elm endures torture and isolation in the dungeon, finding solace in conversations with Erik Spindle and Tyrn Hawthorn.
Erik confesses his guilt over Elspeth’s infection, and Tyrn admits he is weak and bloodstained from his past crimes.
Hauth visits Elm and mocks his feelings for Ione, claiming she will eventually be hunted and killed.
On Solstice, Elm and the other prisoners are taken to Castle Yew for a final execution.
They find Emory being used as bait for Ravyn’s return.
Emory delivers one last prophetic message to Elm before being struck by Hauth.
Part III: To Bend
Chapter 39: Elspeth — The Spirit’s Shore
On the Spirit’s pale beach, Ravyn holds an unconscious Jespyr while the Nightmare watches.
The Spirit of the Wood emerges from the sea, appearing as a creature of claws and silver eyes.
She welcomes the group and prepares for the final barter.
The Spirit demands to know if Ravyn recognizes his own name and his birthright.
The Nightmare warns Ravyn to measure his words carefully.
The chapter ends as the Spirit prepares to show Ravyn the truth of his lineage.
Chapter 40: Elm — The Fall of the Bear
At the final Solstice feast, Hauth poisons King Rowan’s wine while everyone is compelled by a Scythe to ignore his choking.
The King dies and manages to give Elm his Scythe Card with his final breath.
Hauth frames Elm for the regicide and orders his arrest.
Elm uses his new Scythe to freeze the entire great hall in ice to facilitate his and Ione’s escape.
He forces Ione to ride away to safety while he stays to face the Destriers.
Elm is captured and taken back to the dungeon, knowing he has successfully sent the Scythe to Ravyn.
Chapter 41: Ravyn — The Knowledge of the Name
The Spirit shows Ravyn visions of the Shepherd King’s death and the betrayal by Brutus Rowan.
He watches Taxus’s son Bennett escape with the Mirror and Nightmare Cards after destroying a Scythe.
Ravyn realizes that his family changed their name from Taxus to Yew to survive.
He identifies himself as “Taxus” to the Spirit, correctly answering her riddle.
The Spirit grants him the Twin Alders Card but warns that nothing comes free.
They return to the real world just as Solstice begins.
Chapter 42: Elm — The Frozen Court
Elm is thrown back into the frosted dungeon after the court is frozen.
He uses the last of his strength to ensure Ione’s escape path remains clear.

Elm realizes the only way to stop Hauth is for Ravyn to unite the Deck.
Chapter 43: Elspeth — The Plan of the Nightmare
The Nightmare and Elspeth discuss the future of Blunder while waiting for Ravyn’s return.
The Nightmare admits he wants to leave Elspeth a better kingdom and hints at a plan for the Rowans.

The group reunites with Ione and Petyr at the edge of the wood.
They discover Hauth has taken hostages at Castle Yew.

Ravyn confronts Hauth, revealing his possession of the Twin Alders Card.
Hauth threatens to kill the Yews if Ravyn does not surrender.
Ravyn uses his Nightmare Card to communicate a plan to Elm and Ione.
The trees begin to roll and attack the Destriers as Ravyn initiates his final gambit.

Ravyn fights Hauth in the snow, eventually pinning him to the ground.
He reaches into Hauth’s pocket and retrieves the stolen Scythe Card, tearing it in half to destroy its magic forever.

The Nightmare gives his sword to Elm, telling him it is now his turn to be King.
Chapter 48: Elm — The Lifting of the Mist
Elm and Ione confront Hauth in the stone chamber at midnight.
Elm rips Hauth’s charm off, allowing the salt mist to infect and overwhelm him.
They drive the Shepherd King’s sword through Hauth’s heart as his blood spills onto the united Deck of Cards.
One by one, the Providence Cards disappear, and a chasm opens in the stone.
The mist finally lifts from Blunder, revealing the stars and moon for the first time in five hundred years.
Chapter 49: Ravyn — The Light of the Sun
Ravyn is carried into Castle Yew’s great hall by his family and Petyr.
The Nightmare instructs Jespyr to use her newly acquired healing magic to save Ravyn’s life.
Ravyn experiences intense pain and then wakes up two days later in his own bed.
Elm shows him the blue sky through the window and introduces the new “Shepherd Card.”
The Shepherd Card can heal all infection and degeneration permanently without ill effects.
Ravyn meets with the Nightmare one last time in the chamber and destroys the final Nightmare Card to release the Shepherd King’s soul and bring Elspeth back.
Chapter 50: Elspeth — The Final Story
