We Were Never Friends Summary: Spoilers Ahead
Beth Harrison drives her vintage red Mustang to Palm Springs with her daughter, Celeste, who is engaged to Zach Gentry. Beth dreads seeing Roxy Gentry, her old sorority rival and soon-to-be in-law.
At the gates of Gentry House, Beth recognizes the architecture and mosaic pool. The estate is a near-exact replica of the Desert Sunrise hotel, where Sunny Spencer drowned during spring break twenty-five years ago.
Roxy and her husband, Ryan, greet the guests. Ryan claims he restored the 1920s compound for historic preservation.
Dr. Jamie Vale arrives with her husband, Greer. Amelia Dell, a wealthy Washington widow, crashes the weekend with her date, Brett Logan, a former SCU football player.
Beth discovers a 1999 newspaper clipping about Sunny’s death in her room. She later finds a postcard of a blonde woman by a pool and a typed letter signed “Sunny” on her mirror. Guests glimpse a blonde woman in a green dress wandering the grounds.
During a pickleball match, Brett slams a ball into Amelia’s face. A haboob then engulfs the estate, and Brett collapses face down in the pool. Jamie performs CPR but pronounces him dead.
Storm closures prevent emergency services from retrieving the body, so the men place Brett’s corpse under a sheet on the living room piano.
Trapped inside as wildfires approach, the group gathers for a candlelight dinner that becomes a chain of confessions. Ryan announces he is divorcing Roxy after the wedding.
Roxy admits she obtained roofies from Brett twenty-five years ago and spiked Sunny’s margarita out of jealousy. She swiped Ryan’s key card so he couldn’t return to his room.
Amelia reveals she caught Roxy in Sunny’s room that night and blackmailed her for monthly payments ever since.
Jamie confesses she was addicted to prescription drugs in college and embezzled sorority funds to buy pills from Brett. Sunny caught her and threatened to report her. Jamie found Sunny floating in the pool and let her drown to protect her career.
Jamie also admits Brett was still supplying her and blackmailing her for sex and money. She injected potassium chloride into his Gatorade, causing his fatal cardiac arrest.
In her private reflections, Amelia reveals her own secret. After Sunny threatened to expose Amelia’s unpaid dues and hidden family bankruptcy, Amelia held the drugged Sunny underwater until she drowned.
Ryan’s obsession with Sunny led him to rebuild the Desert Sunrise as an act of penance. He hired Kat, a young woman who resembles Sunny, to live on the estate in green dresses. He also stalked Beth and Celeste in Chicago and manipulated Zach into meeting Celeste to draw Beth back.
A tree crashes through the dining room roof, pinning Roxy’s arm. Beth frees her, and Jamie treats the wound.
Ryan pins Beth against a window and demands she suffer. Beth kicks him and escapes with Celeste and Zach.
Amelia flees the estate after seeing Kat dressed as Sunny by the pool. She crashes her sports car into a tree on the storm-damaged roads and dies instantly.
Beth, Celeste, and Zach drive away, passing Amelia’s wreck. Zach returns to Chicago, while Celeste pauses her wedding plans to stay in Huntington Beach with Beth.
