A Killing Cold Summary: Secrets, Snow, and Survival

Introduction

Theo Scott is about to meet her fiancé’s family for the first time.

The Daltons are wealthy, powerful, and gathered at their remote mountain estate called Idlewood.

The snow is deep, the lodge is grand, and the welcome is anything but warm.

In A Killing Cold, author Kate Alice Marshall places a woman with a fractured childhood memory inside a family hiding decades of secrets.

The novel is a psychological thriller that follows Theo as she realizes the mountain may hold the key to her own forgotten past.

This novel fits readers who like psychological thrillers with domestic settings and family dysfunction.

The pacing starts slow, building atmosphere and suspicion, then escalates into survival action in the final third.

Fans of Kate Alice Marshall’s previous thriller What Lies in the Woods will recognize similar themes of buried childhood trauma.

Readers who enjoy Riley Sager’s isolated settings or Sarah Pearse’s winter mysteries will also find familiar ground here.

A Killing Cold Summary: The Full Story (Contains Spoilers)

Theo and Connor arrive at Idlewood during a heavy snow. On the road, they nearly hit a wounded buck shot with an arrow. Gamekeeper Daniel Vance appears with his dog Duchess.

Theo is terrified of dogs. She also hides a secret: she has no memory of her life before age four.

At the estate, Theo meets Connor’s family.

Grandmother Louise interrogates her. Grandfather Magnus watches her closely. Uncle Nick, a doctor, stares at her with cold eyes. Connor’s brother Trevor is hostile.

Theo receives anonymous text messages warning her to leave Connor. Someone leaves a gift-wrapped box at her window addressed to “Dora.” Inside is a typed warning that she should not have come.

While exploring, Theo finds an abandoned fifth cabin called Dragonfly. Inside, she discovers a child’s bedspread with daisies and a brass dragonfly ornament. The ornament matches the tattoo on her wrist. Behind a mirror, she finds a photograph of Liam Dalton holding a little girl’s hand.

The girl has the same two birthmarks on her neck as Theo.

Theo realizes she lived at Idlewood as a child. Her mother was Mallory Cahill, Liam Dalton’s mistress. Liam kept Mallory and young Rowan hidden in Dragonfly cabin.

During a family hunt, Connor accidentally shoots an arrow that grazes Theo’s arm. Nick stitches the wound in Magnus’s office. While alone, Theo finds a disposable phone.

She discovers Magnus sent the anonymous warnings. He wanted to scare her away before she uncovered the truth.

Paloma reveals that Alexis shot Mallory when Alexis was fifteen. Alexis believed she caused her father’s suicide. Theo and Connor try to flee on an ATV. Nick chases them with a rifle. They crash. Connor is injured.

Nick captures Theo. Rose drugs her tea. Nick drags Theo to Dragonfly cabin. He reveals he killed Liam during a fight twenty years ago. He left Liam to die of a brain hemorrhage and hypothermia. He also left young Rowan to freeze.

Gamekeeper Vance found Rowan alive. Magnus arranged her adoption by the Scotts to protect the family. Vance now guards Theo but shows remorse. Theo cuts her zip-ties and escapes when Duchess attacks Vance.

Theo reaches Red Fox cabin. Alexis confesses to shooting Mallory. But Theo reveals Mallory survived the initial gunshot. In a final confrontation, Magnus admits he stabbed Mallory to death.

He covered up the crime to protect the Dalton name and a multi-billion dollar company sale.

Theo kills Nick in self-defense during a second attack. Alexis and other family members confess to the police. Magnus enters hospice and dies without revealing where Mallory is buried. Theo and Connor marry, taking the name Cahill.
