The Troop Summary: A Survival Horror Novel by Nick Cutter
Introduction
Nick Cutter’s The Troop begins with a simple premise: a Scoutmaster and five boys on a remote island for a weekend camping trip.
Their isolation is shattered when a skeletal stranger arrives, carrying a biological horror engineered in a lab. The novel follows the rapid breakdown of order as the threat spreads.
This story is for readers interested in visceral body horror and survival fiction. It examines what happens when children are stripped of adult protection and left to face an unnatural threat. Cutter, a pseudonym for author Craig Davidson, builds a narrative that is as clinical as it is terrifying.

SPOILER WARNING: This section details major plot events, including the ending.
The story begins in a lab where Dr. Clive Edgerton creates a mutated hydatid worm.
The worm is a bioweapon designed to make its host insatiably hungry while consuming all their tissue. A test subject, Thomas Henry Padgett, escapes and flees to Falstaff Island, where Scoutmaster Tim Riggs and his troop are camping. Padgett is emaciated and begs for food.
When Riggs attempts a crude medical procedure on him, a massive worm emerges. Padgett dies, and Riggs is infected during the chaotic event.
The military, led by Admiral Stonewall Brewer, immediately quarantines the island. This leaves the five boys completely isolated, with no help coming.
The boys begin to turn on the infected Riggs and lock him in a closet. Nick Cutter shows their structured scouting world dissolving into primal fear.
Shelley, a disturbed boy with a history of animal cruelty, begins to manipulate the group.
He steals food and torments the infected. Kent Jenks, the group’s former leader, also becomes infected and is locked in a root cellar.
Shelley eventually drowns Kent in the ocean, where worms burst from his skull. Ephraim Elliot, another boy, discovers he is also infected.

Driven to madness, he sets himself on fire.
Max Kirkwood and Newton Thornton are the last boys.
They find the dead stranger’s boat, but the spark plugs are missing. Max realizes Padgett swallowed them.
He retrieves the plugs from the corpse. Before they can escape, Shelley, now horrifically mutated, attacks them in a cave. His stomach ruptures, infecting Newton with a wave of worms.
Max and Newton finally launch the boat. However, as they approach the mainland, the military spots them. Newton, delirious, says the trigger word “hungry.”
A sniper kills him instantly. Max is captured and studied. He is later released, but he is a traumatized outcast. Craig Davidson concludes the novel with Max returning to the charred island.
There, he feels the first pangs of an unnatural hunger beginning within himself.
