Cold Zero Summary: Brad Thor’s Arctic Thriller
TL;DR: Cold Zero: A Defection That Crashes Into the Arctic
A Chinese military AI scientist walks out of Hong Kong with the only surviving copy of a weapon that can seize control of aircraft, ships, and missiles.
The CIA puts him on a commercial flight over the North Pole. Somewhere above the ice, the plane’s engines stop.
Cold Zero by Brad Thor with Ward Larsen follows the fallout: a shattered airliner on the polar pack, ten survivors, and three militaries converging on the same frozen coordinates.
The novel moves between Langley, Beijing, submarine control rooms, and a landscape where the temperature itself is lethal. It is a story about technology, leverage, and who reaches the wreckage first.

CIA officer Kasey Sheridan, callsign Orion, escorts Chen and her partner Walter Ho onto Hemisphere Airlines Flight 777 out of Macau. The jet is bound over the North Pole for New York.
In Beijing, Seventh Bureau chief Zhang Tao learns he has been outmaneuvered. He authorizes a dormant cyber-weapon embedded in exported engine-control microchips, designed years earlier by Chen’s former associate Wu Mei.
A satellite signal triggers a false overheat reading. Both engines of Flight 777 clamp shut and flame out at 34,000 feet, directly above the geographic North Pole.
Captain Bill Fowler and First Officer Brett Sharpe, a former F-22 pilot, attempt a dead-stick landing on the ice. The aft fuselage strikes a pressure ridge and breaks apart, killing Fowler, relief pilot Burns, Walter Ho, and forty-three passengers.
Ten people survive in the forward section, including Sharpe, Kasey, Chen, and two graduate students, Nick and Sofia. They seal the sheared fuselage with a life raft and scavenge clothing and a Winchester Model 70 rifle from the hold.

Chen reveals that before escaping he wiped China’s central research databases. The Sky Fire prototype in Kasey’s possession is now the only copy of a decade of AI warfare research.
Three parties begin moving toward the crash site. At Langley, CIA Deputy Director David Flynn redirects the submarine USS Cheyenne with a SEAL and Finnish special forces detachment aboard, and dispatches an LC-130 ski-plane from Greenland.
China sends the icebreaker Snow Dragon 2 and twenty-four commandos from the 78th Special Forces Brigade. Russia’s prototype attack submarine Aurora, running sea trials nearby, detects gunfire Kasey uses to scare off a polar bear.
Captain Arkady Khurtin surfaces the Aurora and hands over supplies while filming a propaganda segment. When the Snow Dragon 2 appears on the horizon, Kasey orders Chen to use Sky Fire defensively.
The system autonomously seizes the icebreaker’s engines and navigation, driving it at flank speed into the surfaced Aurora. The submarine’s bow is sheared off and floods; the icebreaker grounds itself on the floe.
Khurtin retaliates by seizing the Snow Dragon 2 bridge at gunpoint and taking its crew captive. Kasey, Chen, and Sharpe trek across the ice to an automated weather station designated as a rendezvous point.
There they meet Lieutenant Peter Drake’s four-man SEAL and Finnish team. The group marks a runway for the incoming LC-130, which is destroyed by an RPG as it lands, killing all three aircrew.
A firefight erupts on open ice. Finnish sniper Juri breaks up advancing Chinese mortar and assault teams. Sharpe takes a leg wound as a second wave of more than a hundred paratroopers closes in.
With no aircraft left, Kasey calls for four F-35s to drop 1,000-pound JDAMs onto the pack ice 400 meters away. The strikes blast a channel of open water, and the Cheyenne surfaces beside them under fire.
The team climbs aboard as an enemy round punches through the Sky Fire case on Kasey’s back, stopping before it reaches her. The submarine dives beneath the ice pack.
In Beijing, Zhang Tao tries to flee after the mission collapses. Wu Mei secretly records him attempting to contact the CIA and delivers the evidence to the Minister of State Security, and Zhang is taken away in handcuffs.
Two weeks later in Crystal City, Virginia, Kasey visits a recovering Brett Sharpe. She explains that Washington and Beijing agreed to bury the battle, publicly labeling the events training accidents and weather disasters.
Chen is resting at a secure DARPA facility to help build AI defenses. Kasey warns Sharpe that Chinese intelligence may still regard him as a threat, and offers CIA help with a new career and identity.
