The Summer Guests Summary: The Deep Dive
Spoiler warning: This section recaps the full plot, including the ending.
Tess Gerritsen sets The Summer Guests in Purity, Maine, a small town split by Maiden Pond. The western shore holds the summer estates of wealthy families. The eastern shore holds modest year-round homes, including the Tarkin place.
This division shapes everything that follows. The story opens in 1972, when a local carpenter named Sam Tarkin kills a police officer during a drug-fueled rampage. That event leaves a wound that never heals.
Decades later, his son Reuben still watches the lake with bitterness. In the present, Susan Conover arrives at the family estate called Moonview with her husband Ethan and daughter Zoe. They are there to scatter the ashes of Ethan’s late father, George Conover.
Zoe goes swimming and meets Callie Yount, a local homeschooled girl. Zoe does not come back. Acting Police Chief Jo Thibodeau launches a search.
Suspicion falls on Luther Yount, Callie’s grandfather, who last saw Zoe. Maggie Bird, a retired CIA officer, hosts her Martini Club friends and steps in to defend Luther. The group includes Declan, Ingrid, Ben, and Lloyd.
Zoe’s backpack turns up miles south on Route 1. But Susan finds Zoe’s dress washed at the house, meaning Zoe returned home to change. Divers search Maiden Pond and raise a weighted body bag. It holds a skeleton, not Zoe.
The skeleton belongs to an adult woman, tied down with green nylon cord. Zoe’s phone is found with a local thief named Farley Wade. Zoe is then discovered alive but badly injured at the bottom of a ravine. She is placed in a medically induced coma.
The Martini Club digs into Purity’s history. They learn that Elizabeth Conover, Arthur Fox, and Dr. Harold Greene ran a Project MKUltra site in 1972. They tested drugs on locals, including Sam Tarkin.
They also silenced a whistleblower named Vivian Stillwater. But the skeleton’s dental work dates to the mid-1980s, ruling out Vivian. The skeleton is identified as Anna, the Conover family’s former nanny.
Sixteen years earlier, Colin Conover had an affair with Anna and she became pregnant. Colin’s wife Brooke pushed Anna down the stairs, killing her. George Conover sank the body in the pond.
Zoe spotted the skeleton while free-diving. That is why Brooke struck her and left her in the ravine. Susan finds Zoe’s ear stud in Brooke’s car trunk.
Brooke and her son Kit push Susan down the stairs and try to drown her in the pond. Reuben Tarkin rescues Susan. Jo Thibodeau arrests Brooke and Kit.
In the end, Jo is named Chief of Police.
The Conovers put Moonview up for sale. Reuben finds some peace as he cares for his terminally ill sister.

Beneath the Surface: What Drives the Story
Maiden Pond functions as the story’s physical center.
Its calm water hides a weighted body, Cold War history, and the Conover family’s secrets.
The lake is not just a setting; it is the place where past crimes resurface.
Family loyalty is presented as a moral trap in The Summer Guests. Elizabeth Conover’s rule that family protects family leads to murder, attempted murder, and a sixteen-year silence.
The cost of that loyalty falls hardest on those outside the family.
The novel also returns repeatedly to the divide between wealthy outsiders and local residents.
The summer families use Purity as a retreat, while the year-round people like the Tarkins and Younts carry the weight of what happens there.
