The Isles of the Gods Summary: The Deep Dive

SPOILER WARNING: This section reveals the complete plot, including the ending.

Five hundred and one years before the main story, King Anselm of Alinor sacrificed his life to strengthen Barrica, the Warrior goddess. Barrica then bound her brother Macean, the god of risk, in a deep slumber.

The royal family of Alinor must renew this sacrifice every twenty-five years at the Isles of the Gods.

In the present, Selly Walker serves aboard the Lizabetta in Kirkpool, the capital of Alinor. She plans to escape her captain and sail north to rejoin her father. Her plan collapses when Prince Leander secretly boards the ship with his schoolmate Keegan Wollesley.

The Lizabetta departs without clearance or half its crew. Leander must make the overdue pilgrimage to the Isles of the Gods. The sacrifice will renew Barrica’s power and keep Macean bound.

In Port Naranda, the capital of Mellacea, Laskia plans to ignite a war. She works with Jude Kien, Leander’s destitute former friend, and the fanatical Sister Beris. Laskia intercepts Leander’s decoy progress fleet aboard the warship Macean’s Fist.

Her crew massacres everyone on the decoy ships. They plant Mellacean navy uniforms to frame their own government. Realizing Leander was not aboard, Laskia hunts the Lizabetta.

The Macean’s Fist catches the smaller ship. A brutal battle kills Kyri, Captain Rensa, and most of the crew. Selly, Leander, and Keegan escape in the shore boat, the Little Lizabetta.

They drift toward Mellacea with no food or water. During the voyage, Leander helps Selly connect with the spirits. She discovers she possesses a unique magical connection that works when she asks rather than commands.

In Port Naranda, the trio hides at the Salthouse Inn. They encounter Jude at a club. Jude warns Leander to leave but refuses to explain why.

Laskia bombs the Alinorish Ambassador’s auto, killing Lady Lanham. She tracks the trio to the inn. Selly and Leander use magic to fight her off and escape.

They travel by train to Port Cathar. Selly buys a fishing boat named the Emma. Laskia follows in a hired vessel called the Mermaid.

A massive storm strikes during the voyage to the Isles. Leander falls unconscious. Selly sacrifices her cherished paper boat to the air spirits, opening her heart to them. She successfully guides the Emma through the storm.

They land at the Isles of the Gods. At the Temple of Barrica, they find Laskia’s previous crew dead and the altar smashed. Leander cannot make the sacrifice without the altar.

Laskia, Jude, and Dasriel confront them at the Temple of the Mother. Dasriel’s gun explodes when he tries to shoot Leander on sacred ground. Knowing they are trapped, Leander vaults from the balcony into the cavern below.

He sacrifices his life to Barrica. He is resurrected as a glowing Messenger. Selly kisses him to ground his overwhelming magic.

Laskia leaps after him for Macean. She is also resurrected, imbued with the awakening god’s power. Jude stays behind to carry her back to Port Naranda. Selly, Leander, and Keegan sail the Emma back to Kirkpool, where Alinor’s fleet awaits.

Amie Kaufman ends the first book with Laskia awakening as Macean’s vessel. The war of the gods is about to begin.
