Pretty Dead Things Summary: A Southern Gothic Pageant Thriller

TL;DR: Buried Secrets and Pageant Lies

A vast ranch in the Texas Hill Country is being cleared for a luxury housing development.

The ground yields more than cedar roots and limestone. It gives up a decades-old secret tied to the disappearance of a teenage beauty queen. This is the starting point of **Pretty Dead Things** by Kelsey Cox.

The novel drops readers into Anhalt, a town where the local pageant is a religion and reputations are guarded fiercely.

The story moves between the summer of 2000 and the winter of 2025. A historic Arctic storm freezes the landscape, trapping the town as old secrets surface.

The arrival of a mysterious note pushes the plot toward its deadly conclusion. The narrative focuses on what people will do to protect their families and the polished images they present to the world.

– A 25-year-old cold case is reopened when human remains are found.
– Twin sisters, a prank gone wrong, and a poisoned lipstick started it all.
– The upcoming pageant’s Golden Jubilee forces the town’s key players into a confined space.
– A mother’s instinct to protect her daughter leads to multiple murders.
– The case is “solved” with a false confession, hiding the true killer in plain sight.

Pretty Dead Things Summary: The Full Story

Spoiler Warning: This section reveals the entire plot, including the ending.

In the summer of 2000, identical twins Ingrid and Isabelle Whitmore are seniors in Anhalt. Ingrid and her best friend Kennedy Claire play a cruel prank on their classmate, Melanie Campbell.

They leave Melanie stranded after a skinny-dipping trip. While hiding in a cave at The Hollow, Melanie is sexually assaulted by Abel Sherman.

Melanie tells only her best friend, Cat Dennis, who helps her plan revenge. They blame Ingrid for the entire ordeal.

The afternoon before the 2000 pageant, Cat and Melanie rub almond oil on Ingrid’s lipstick in the school auditorium.

Ingrid has an injured ankle and plans a twin-swap trick, so Isabelle uses the lipstick first. Isabelle goes into fatal anaphylactic shock and dies.

Terrified, Cat and Melanie float her body down the river and hide it in a cave crevice. Because Isabelle was wearing Ingrid’s scarf, the town believes Isabelle ran away.

Ingrid survives. For 25 years, Isabelle’s boyfriend, Ben Sherman, is blamed for her disappearance.

In the winter of 2025, the excavation of Sherman Ranch unearths human remains in The Hollow. **Kelsey Cox** brings Ingrid back to Anhalt to care for her sick mother.

Ingrid receives an anonymous note: “BEN DIDN’T KILL IZZY.” The note is from Cat, who is consumed by guilt. The Golden Jubilee pageant is pushed forward despite a severe storm.

Cat’s daughter, Olivia, and Melanie’s daughter, Hannah, join the contest.

A chain of confrontations begins. The girls find a trail camera that captures them misbehaving. Cat discovers the missing camera card and threatens Kennedy Claire.

Melanie finds the footage and realizes Cat’s paranoia was caused by a private investigator hired by Olivia’s stepmother.

When Cat threatens to confess the 2000 crime to the sheriff, Melanie goes to Cat’s model home and kills her with a heavy bowl.

As the power grid fails, the town is isolated in an Amenity Center. Melanie manipulates the dying Abel Sherman. She convinces him his son Ben will be blamed for the new murder unless Abel takes the fall.

Abel writes a confession to both murders and shoots himself.

During the pageant, Olivia shaves her head, and Hannah and Sarah Lynn shave theirs in solidarity.

Sheriff Ryan finds footage of Melanie killing Cat.

He destroys it to protect his daughter. Melanie floats down the river with Kennedy Claire, free from suspicion.
