A Forsaken Prophecy Summary: Deep Dive (Spoilers)

In A Forsaken Prophecy by Stacey McEwan, the story begins after the fall of Kenton Hill.

The wounded Alchemist Patrick Colson, earth Charmer Nina Harrow, and former minister Theodore “Theo” Shop are captured in the tunnels by the Lords’ Army.

They are transported in cattle cars to Belavere City.

Patrick accuses Nina of betraying Kenton Hill, while Nina reveals that Lord Tanner holds her mother, Rose Harrow, hostage.

Upon arrival at the National House, Lord Tanner slashes Nina’s and Theo’s branded arms to drain their magic. Patrick is isolated in a laboratory where Tanner attempts to force him to siphon idium from terranium ore.

To break Patrick’s resolve, Tanner brings in Patrick’s captured father, John Colson. A guard strikes John, and Patrick uses his remaining strength to siphon a single vial of idium to heal his father’s bleeding head.

In secret, Lord Terrence Shop approaches John and Patrick. He reveals an ancient text called The Stewards’ Testament, written in archaic Verian Script, which details Idia’s Seam—a massive, untapped vein of terranium.

Shop plans to overthrow Tanner and promises a truce and fair distribution of idium in exchange for their assistance. Patrick siphons a dose of idium for Theo to use as a weapon.

At dawn, Tanner places Rose Harrow on the gallows in the courtyard. Terrified, Nina surrenders and pledges complete obedience to Tanner. However, the trapdoor is pulled regardless, snapping Rose’s neck.

Overcome by grief and rage, Nina unleashes her earth Charmer abilities, causing the ground to swell and swallow Lord Tanner alive. Lord Terrence Shop steps in to halt the execution of Nina, claiming the title of Head of House for himself.

When Patrick discovers that Terrence Shop arranged Rose’s death to break Nina and appease the ministry, he teams up with Theo.

Assisted by John Colson driving a horseless wagon, they rescue Nina from a carriage where Shop was transporting her to be publicly whipped.

They flee to the city docks. Following a fierce brawl with police at Pylon Three, Theo uses his water Charmer powers to manipulate the canal currents, enabling Nina, Patrick, John, and Theo to escape on a narrow boat.

They travel along the canal system to the gambling city of Morland, taking refuge in The Mistress, a brothel/hotel managed by Tamir.

Seeking a Scribbler to translate The Stewards’ Testament, Nina and Theo disguise themselves and enter Rickers, an elite pleasure house.

There, Nina discovers that the Scribbler working the card tables is Polly Prescott—her former friend who had previously betrayed Kenton Hill’s tunnels to Tanner.

Nina holds Polly at gunpoint, causing a panic that leads to a standoff with police. After Nina triggers a structural earthquake, Patrick arrives, shoots the officers, and captures Polly. Back at the hotel, Patrick forces Polly to agree to translate The Stewards’ Testament in exchange for passage on a ship out of the continent from Hoaklin.

Polly begins translating the glyphs, revealing the myth of God’s three daughters: Joan, Dione, and Idia. The party travels by foot and underground tunnels toward Trent, only to find the town razed by Fire Charmers, filled with dead and dying Crafters.

Edith, a surviving Crafter woman, demands blu at knifepoint, but Patrick promises coal, food, and assistance instead.

Nina uses her earth magic to bury over a hundred corpses in a ravine. After Patrick and John burn three remaining police officers alive in a trading post, a company of Lords’ Army soldiers invades Trent.

Patrick, John, and Theo fight their way out, with Theo using the river to flood the street and drown the infantry. During their escape into the snowy woods, Theo takes a bullet in the side meant for Nina.

They travel south through tunnels to Lavnonshire and hide in Trunk Antiques and Oddities, run by Mrs. Trunk, a mute wood Mason who speaks through a standing piano.

While Theo heals with blu, Polly explains she needs a glyph cypher book owned by her late grandfather. Polly visits her estranged parents and learns her father donated the cypher to the Geffory Tanner Collection in the Lavnonshire library.

Polly and Theo infiltrate the library to complete the translation. As Polly finishes, Lord Terrence Shop and his soldiers corner them, tipped off by Polly’s father.

Fire Charmers burn Polly’s hands to prevent her from writing. Patrick, Nina, and John arrive, but Shop reveals his true plot: he intentionally permitted Nina and Patrick to escape so they would locate and unearth Idia’s Seam for him.

Nina triggers a massive structural collapse of the library’s heavy stone shelves, enabling Patrick, Nina, and John to escape while Shop takes Theo and Polly prisoner.

Before her hands were burned, Polly magically scribbled a message onto Patrick’s forearm: “They were Idia’s own countrymen, who came to those soft hills of widow’s lace.” Nina realizes “widow’s lace” refers to her hometown of Scurry.

The group travels to Scurry, where Nina finds her father, Fletcher Harrow, ruined by blu addiction. In the abandoned Scurry mines, Patrick, John, and Nina locate the immense vein of terranium constituting Idia’s Seam directly beneath the town. Patrick siphons a flask of idium for Harland Seymour to secure labor.

However, John Colson admits that he was the person who originally stole The Stewards’ Testament from Polly’s grandfather and tried to sell it to Tanner years ago, betraying the Union. In the alley, Tess Colson shoots and kills her husband John for his betrayals.

As the Lords’ Army arrives to occupy Scurry, Nina channels her full, unrestrained earth Charmer magic to collapse the Scurry church and open massive chasms across the parish, burying Idia’s Seam deep under the rubble so the House can never claim it.

Patrick carries an exhausted Nina to the waiting longboat. They set sail back north toward Kenton Hill with Donny, Gunner, Tess, and Theo.

In the Epilogue, Tripp, an orphaned Scurry miner boy, is captured by Lord Terrence Shop.

Tripp discovers he can levitate terranium ore—revealing himself to be a newly awakened Alchemist.
