Delusional Summary: The Full Story
Spoiler warning: This section reveals the complete plot including the ending.
Four months before the main events, an anarchist group recruits Thomas Wayne Owens. Owens is an MIT-educated engineer living in an isolated cabin near Millwood, New York. Ellis Warrenton leads the group, with young Kimmy and a large man named Pry also involved.
During the first meeting, Pry mishandles a blasting cap. It explodes, removing two fingers from his left hand. That injury becomes a forensic marker connecting the group to future crimes.
In present-day Manhattan, Detective Michael Bennett investigates a fatal bombing at the Office of Technology and Innovation annex. A young clerk named Abby Boyd dies. The bomb contains glitter and uses a timer. Investigators find a smudge print showing missing fingers.
Bennett’s partner, Rob Trilling, receives an urgent call. His brother Gary needs help in Bozeman, Montana. A Los Angeles developer named Arnold Marks is pressuring the family to sell their car lot.
Bennett learns about a burglary at the Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey. C-4 and black powder were stolen. ATF Agent Margaret Maggie Chin joins the investigation. The entry method at the arsenal matches the Manhattan office break-in.
The bomb-makers stay in a Yonkers Airbnb that Owens hacked to remain vacant. They target Virtual Spaces in Midtown. The explosion shatters glass, kills three people, and injures dozens.
Bennett panics when he realizes his daughter Juliana had an interview there. A lost phone delayed her. She and Katie, Rob’s roommate, are safe.
In Montana, Marks’s thugs burn a vintage Corvette on the Trilling lot. They pick fights at Hildebrand’s Sports Bar. The violence escalates when arson destroys the car lot office, killing bookkeeper Lillian Mathis.
Rob calls Bennett. Bennett flies to Bozeman. He confronts Marks with an open-hand slap. He exposes Cindy, a college student bribed to feed information to Marks.
Marks retaliates with an armed night raid on the Trilling home. A shootout erupts. Chet Trilling, Rob’s grandfather with dementia, saves Bennett by shooting Marks with a shotgun. The crew flees.
The next day, FBI Agent Brian Hadley tries to shield Marks. Marks’s real name is Arjan Marku, an Albanian gangster and valuable FBI informant. Bennett refuses to comply and returns to New York.
Bozeman FBI Agent Leland Ackerley warns Bennett that Marku plans revenge. Meanwhile, police identify Pry as Leonard Barr. They arrest him at a Bronx storage facility.
Pry’s defense attorney, Robert Heitz, tips off Ellis. Owens hacks the NYPD database and rigs a bomb to the door handle of Bennett’s blue Chevy Impala.
Bennett and Maggie trace Owens to the Yonkers Airbnb. They find Ellis punching Owens in the yard. Ellis flees with a satchel bomb and remote control. Maggie tackles Owens while Bennett chases Ellis.
The remote explodes in Ellis’s hand. Owens had rigged it as revenge for being bullied. Ellis suffers severe burns and loses consciousness.
Owens cooperates during the ride back. He admits to past actions, including the murder of Sergeant Rose Vega in Queens.
At the Homicide parking lot, Arjan Marku ambushes Bennett. He demands car keys at gunpoint. Owens warns Bennett about the bomb. Marku pulls the door handle. The explosion kills Marku. Bennett dives, shoving Owens to safety, and survives with second-degree burns.
The book ends with Bennett recovering at home.
The Internal Affairs complaint against him is cleared. The family attends Juliana’s theatrical opening. Rob returns to New York, surprising Juliana with roses and a kiss.
