Faebound Summary: The Full Story
SPOILER WARNING: This section includes major plot details and the ending.
The story begins in a world shaped by three creator gods. Elves believe humans and fae are extinct. The four elven tribes fight an endless war over sunlight-mimicking crystals called fraedia.
Yeeran Teila is promoted to colonel by her lover, Chieftain Salawa. She receives a magical drum made from obeah skin. Her sister, Lettle, is a diviner who prophesies that Yeeran’s glory lies to the east.
Trusting the prophecy, Yeeran leads her regiment east. They are ambushed by Crescent soldiers protected by an impenetrable barrier. The defeat is catastrophic, with 376 casualties. Yeeran is court-martialed.
Salawa chooses political stability over love. She slashes Yeeran’s ears, strips her title, and exiles her. Lettle and Captain Rayan escape the elven lands to find her.
In the outer forests, Yeeran hunts a giant elder obeah, hoping its hide will buy back her citizenship. She kills it. A golden-clad woman named Furi appears and arrests her. The obeah was soul-bound to Furi’s brother, the prince.
The elves are taken to Mosima, a massive underground cavern lit by a cluster of fraedia crystals called “the fray.” Fae society is divided between those who bond with obeahs and the “Lightless” who cannot.
Yeeran is sentenced to death. During the execution, a wild obeah named Pila bonds with her. This makes her faebound and legally protected. She is sentenced to five years of service under Furi instead.
During training on Conch Shore, Yeeran and Furi develop an intense romantic connection. Furi explains that Mosima’s fields have suffered from a blight for thirty years, but the blight vanished when the elves arrived.
Meanwhile, Lettle and Rayan fall in love. Lettle fears a prophecy that she will grant her beloved death. She pushes him away while apprenticing under Golan, the royal stylist. She also learns bloodless divination from Seer Sahar.
At the Flare Feast, Queens Vyce and Chall are poisoned. Golan and Prince Nerad are responsible. Nerad wanted to maintain a military alliance with the Crescent tribe to reclaim the fae’s ancestral home.
During the coronation, the Tree of Souls chooses Rayan as the next king.
He is revealed as the half-fae son of Furi’s deceased brother, Najma.
Rayan also learns that his cellmate, Komi, is actually Chieftain Akomido, the tyrant who murdered his mother.
Nerad flees and falls to his death. Rayan executes Akomido by encasing him in stone. Lettle confesses to Yeeran that she poisoned their abusive father to end his suffering.
The sisters part ways. Furi gives Yeeran the word “Aiftarri” to open the boundary. Yeeran returns to the surface with Pila to warn Salawa of an incoming fae-Crescent army. Rayan remains as king. Lettle stays as the next seer.
In the epilogue, Rayan finds a letter from Najma. It references research hidden where “the earth’s teeth grow,” suggesting a possible way to break the curse of Mosima.
