Earthbound by Saara El-Arifi Summary: Epic Finale of The Faebound Trilogy Explained

Introduction

Ten years ago, a nameless man was found outside a cave in the freezing mountains of Caperly.

He had no memory, only a mysterious connection to a curse that has trapped an entire civilization underground. Now, that man’s past is the only hope for the future.

Earthbound is the final book in Saara El-Arifi’s Faebound Trilogy.

It brings the stories of sisters Lettle and Yeeran, the human Alder, and Queen Furi to a decisive close. Readers who have followed the series from Faebound and Cursebound will find this installment focused on resolution, revelation, and the high cost of peace.

Saara El-Arifi is a British-Ghanaian author known for her epic fantasy worlds built on intricate magic systems and political tension.

This book is written for readers who have followed the Faebound Trilogy from the beginning. The emotional payoff depends on knowing the history between Lettle, Yeeran, Furi, and Alder.

New readers should start with Faebound before picking up this installment.

TL;DR: The Final Knot Untied

Earthbound closes the trilogy by resolving the mystery of the obeah curse and the siege of Mosima. The story splits into two fronts.

Lettle and Alder travel to Caperly to recover his lost memories. Yeeran and Furi remain in Mosima to face a biological attack and a military coup.

  • Alder discovers he is Afa, the ancient human sorcerer who created the obeah and cursed the fae.
  • The elven general Malak murders his fellow chieftains and launches a final assault on Mosima.
  • The unravelling spell saves Rayan but destabilizes the underground city.
  • Alder sacrifices himself to turn all obeah back into humans, finally breaking the ancient magic.
  • The epilogue shows a world adapting to freedom one year later.

The book balances political siege, magical revelation, and romantic resolution.

It brings the series’ central conflicts about memory, duty, and sacrifice to a definitive end.

Earthbound Summary: The Full Story

Spoiler Warning: This summary includes major plot points and the ending of the novel.

The story opens four months after the events of Cursebound. The elven sisters Lettle and Yeeran are separated by distance and duty.

Lettle travels with Alder and the faeguard Farhan toward the mountain village of Caperly. Yeeran remains in Mosima, the subterranean fae city, serving as ambassador to the hostile elven coalition camped outside the gates.

Mosima is dying under siege. The elven tribes demand more fraedia, the precious mineral that powers fae magic. Queen Furi refuses.

Mining more would collapse the fragile ecosystem that keeps the underground city alive. The political deadlock sets the stage for every tragedy that follows.

In Caperly, Lettle and Alder find a society of Nomads who remember Alder as a man who abandoned them. After a community vote, the Nomads allow them entry.

An elder named Mortah reveals she was present when Alder was found ten years ago. She guides the group to Raven’s Valley and the cave where Alder’s old life ended.

Inside the cave, Lettle discovers a pool of water charged with human magic. She uses a command word from Afa’s grimoire to pass through the barrier.

Alder follows, and the crossing restores his ancient memories. The man who emerges is no longer Alder. He is Afa, the last living human and the sorcerer who created the obeah curse a thousand years ago.

Meanwhile, Mosima descends into catastrophe. A faeguard named Cely is found dead. Her obeah was murdered by elven drumfire in the neutral zone. Enraged, Furi executes Chieftain Motogo, the Waning leader demanding more fraedia. General Malak is taken prisoner.

The elven response is immediate and brutal. They release rats infected with the wasting pox into the city. The disease spreads quickly. Queen Furi falls critically ill. Desperate, Yeeran trades the captured Malak back to the elven camp in exchange for a crate of hister flowers, the only known cure. Before leaving, Malak releases a swarm of locusts that destroys half of Mosima’s crops.

Furi survives. The city does not have time to recover. Malak stages a bloody coup, assassinating the other three elven chieftains to declare himself sole ruler.

A final battle erupts outside the gates. Malak flees to the tunnel entrance and attacks Lettle. Rayan’s obeah, Ajax, is fatally wounded by drumfire while shielding her. Because fae and obeah share a life force, Rayan begins to die as well.

Lettle and Furi use Afa’s unravelling spell to save Rayan’s life. The spell works, but it also tears apart the magical bonds holding Mosima together.

The cavern ceiling begins to collapse. Alder, now fully aware of his identity as Afa, uses his elemental power to redirect the falling Tree of Souls and melt the rock ceiling. For the first time in a thousand years, Mosima is open to the sky.

Alder makes one final choice.

To fully restore the humans trapped inside the obeah, he must sacrifice his own life force. He speaks the last spell and disintegrates. Every obeah transforms back into a human being.

Yeeran is reunited with Pila, her bonded companion, now in human form.

One year later, the world has shifted. The fae have relocated to their ancestral capital of Lorhan. Mortah leads the elven army.

Caperly is a growing independent city. Lettle lives quietly in the ruins of Mosima with Rayan. Yeeran and Furi work as healers and leaders together.

Golan tends a farm built for him by Alder, a final gift left behind.
