A Killer in the Family Summary: A Dark Family Thriller

TL;DR: What This Book Is About

Ali Azeem is a wedding photographer in Mumbai with a failing family business and no clear way out.

When a matchmaking visit brings him face to face with the Khan family—one of the wealthiest Ismaili real estate dynasties in America—his mother sees a solution. Ali sees something else entirely in Farhan, the bride’s rebellious older sister.

A Killer in the Family by Amin Ahmad follows Ali from a Mumbai apartment to a prewar Manhattan co-op, where an arranged marriage, an illicit affair, and a serial killer who once terrorized Queens pull him into a web he cannot escape.

The novel moves between two cities, two class worlds, and several versions of the truth.

  • The setup: Ali Azeem marries Dr. Maryam Khan for stability, then begins a secret affair with her sister Farhan before the wedding even happens.
  • The complication: Farhan is hunting the Jackson Heights Serial Killer, and she believes the trail leads back to her own father, billionaire Abbas Khan.
  • The twist layer: Almost everyone in this family is hiding something—an illegitimate son, a slush fund, a forced abortion, a body in the woods.
  • The core theme: Wealth does not corrupt this family so much as reveal what was already there. The most dangerous person is the one nobody suspects.
  • The tone: Slow-burn noir told across shifting timelines, with a first-person narrator who is complicit long before he is honest.

A Killer in the Family Summary: Full Story Breakdown

Warning: major spoilers ahead.

The story opens in June 2016 at Sher Khan House, the Khan family’s Southampton estate. Maryam Khan panics after reading that a human heart was found in a Staten Island salt pile. Ali sedates her, then walks into the woods to check a grave he dug himself.

A corpse lies five feet down, wrapped in bedsheets and Ali’s monogrammed Italian blazer. From there, A Killer in the Family rewinds to explain how Ali got there.

In June 2014, Ali Azeem meets the Khans in Mumbai. His mother arranged the introduction because Azeem & Sons is bankrupt. Maryam is the intended bride, a disciplined psychiatric resident.

But Ali connects instantly with Farhan, her thirty-four-year-old divorced sister. Farhan texts him an invitation to the Taj Palace Hotel, and the affair begins before the wedding does.

Ali and Maryam marry in Mumbai and honeymoon near Seville. Maryam is remote, formal, and constantly in contact with her father. After their first sexual encounter, she locks herself in the bathroom and cries.

The couple then moves into a grand apartment at the Apthorp on the Upper West Side. Broke and unwilling to ask his in-laws for money, Ali accepts a marketing job at Abbas Khan’s Tiger Corp.

He devises an EB-5 visa financing plan for TowerSeven, the company’s flagship skyscraper. Abbas loves it and pairs Ali with Kyle Nowak, an aggressive junior executive.

Meanwhile, Ali keeps meeting Farhan at her Chinatown apartment. She warns him that Abbas is dangerous. She says he forced her into an abortion in Zurich at sixteen and had her teenage boyfriend beaten.

Then Farhan moves to Tokyo to open a jewelry store, and Ali tries to commit to his marriage. Amin Ahmad keeps the affair unresolved rather than closed.

In early 2015, Ali spots Maryam meeting an elderly man at the New Yorker Diner. The man is Orlando Epps, an eighty-two-year-old retired NYPD homicide detective running Hawk Investigations.

Ali assumes Maryam hired Epps to investigate his infidelity. He withdraws twenty thousand dollars in corporate cash and tries to bribe the detective in a Jackson Heights alley.

Epps ambushes him instead. He rejects the money and reveals that Farhan—not Maryam—hired him. Epps says Abbas Khan has blood on his hands and was linked to five unsolved murders in Jackson Heights.

Farhan returns to New York with threatening postcards she received in Tokyo. Each is signed with a blood-red heart and warns that her sister will die if she stays away.

She sets a sting at Grand Central Terminal. Farhan stands by the central clock in red lipstick while Ali photographs the crowd from an upper balcony with a 1200mm lens.

The plan collapses when Barey Mian, Abbas’s lifelong driver and enforcer, confronts Farhan on the concourse and threatens to have her institutionalized again.

Back at the Apthorp, Ali studies the photographs and spots a suspicious figure among a group of Jehovah’s Witnesses. It is George Narine Persaud, the building’s mild-mannered doorman.

Ali and Farhan dig into his background. George lied on his resume, once worked in a Jackson Heights sari shop, and was in Guyana when three women disappeared.

They drive to his basement apartment in Queens. Through the window they see a wall covered in cutouts of mutilated women, and a leather valise holding eight human hearts in jars of formaldehyde.

When George returns, Farhan beats him to death with a steel fence pole. Ali wraps the body in his blazer and bedsheets and buries it in the Southampton woods.

Farhan steals $1.5 million from Abbas’s secret slush fund using Ali’s computer credentials, then disappears with the valise. She tosses one heart into a salt pile on her way out.

That single act triggers the police investigation that opens the novel.

In July 2016, Abbas Khan dies of a heart attack in a Bronx rental building. At the board meeting at One World Trade Center, Farhan reappears with platinum-blonde hair.

Using Coco’s proxy vote, she installs Kyle Nowak as CEO and ousts Abbas’s nephew Big Mike. Kyle immediately fires Ali and blackmails him over the $1.5 million transfer.

Ali retrieves a padded envelope that Epps left at the New Yorker Diner before vanishing. Inside is a birth certificate.

It shows that Abbas’s longtime Polish mistress, Ewa Nachtmann—later Ava Nowak—gave birth to his illegitimate son, Kamran Nachtmann. Kamran renamed himself Kyle Nowak.

Ali confronts Farhan at Kyle’s TowerSeven penthouse with the documents. She realizes she has been sleeping with her own half-brother and vomits in the sink.

As Ali leaves, Kyle enters carrying pink peonies. Ali warns him that Farhan knows the truth. Kyle dismisses it and walks inside.

Farhan shoots him three times. She is later committed to a high-security psychiatric facility, while her lawyers argue temporary insanity.

On New Year’s Eve 2016, Ali addresses the Khan family at Sher Khan House as Chief Operating Officer, with Maryam pregnant with twins.

Later, in Abbas’s study, Ali tries to confess the affair. Maryam stops him. She says she knew from the beginning and deliberately waited for Farhan to destroy herself.

Maryam explains that she wanted Ali, the empire, and the legacy, and she was willing to let her sister unravel to get them. She dismisses the murdered women and Kyle as people who “don’t count.”

She takes Ali on a midnight helicopter tour over Manhattan. The novel closes with a final chapter narrated by Maryam herself on January 1, 2017.

She is pregnant with twins she has named Sara and Amar, and she has decided their surname will be Khan alone. Ali is pale and nightmare-ridden, but she is confident she can shape him.

She has kept Farhan’s diary, which documents the manipulation of Ali, as leverage. When a homeless man bangs on their SUV window, Maryam pretends to be frightened, and Ali orders the driver to run the red light.

She settles into his arms, satisfied. A Killer in the Family ends with the reader understanding that the title does not refer to Farhan, or to Abbas, or to George.
