Books And Bewitchment Summary: A Cozy Witchy Romance

TL;DR: A Fresh Start in a Town She Was Warned to Avoid

Rhea Wolfe has spent years holding everything together for other people.

At twenty-six, she works a dull desk job in Alabama, dates a boyfriend she has outgrown, and helps support her two younger sisters.

Then she loses the job and receives a letter from a small Georgia town she was forbidden to visit.

Her estranged grandmother, Maggie Kirkwood, has died and left her four downtown storefronts in Arcadia Falls.

Books & Bewitchment by Isla Jewell follows Rhea as she accepts the inheritance, discovers her family’s hidden magical history, and tries to turn a dying video store into a bookstore. It is the first book in the Arcadia Falls series.

  • Who: Rhea Wolfe, a burned-out twenty-six-year-old who inherits property from a grandmother she never knew.
  • Where: Arcadia Falls, Georgia, a mountain town of brick storefronts, fairy lights, and witch families who no longer speak to each other.
  • The twist: Rhea’s blood, the waterfall, and Maggie’s ashes awaken her dormant magic—and trap her grandmother’s soul inside Rhea’s pet cockatoo.
  • The goal: Renovate the storefronts, tame a poltergeist, and find the grimoires Maggie hid decades ago.
  • Key themes: found family, generational feuds, inherited purpose, and sharing power instead of hoarding it.
  • Tone: Warm, funny, romantic, and low on graphic content.

Books & Bewitchment Summary: What Happens in the Story

Spoiler warning: the following section covers the full plot, including the ending.

Rhea Wolfe’s routine collapses in a single week. Her boss at Buckley Insurance fires her to hire his own niece, leaving Rhea without income while she still helps support her sisters, Cait and Jemma.

The same week, a letter arrives from Colonel Roy Gooch, an attorney in Arcadia Falls, Georgia. Her grandmother Maggie has died in a car accident, and Rhea is the sole heir to four downtown storefronts and an apartment above them.

Rhea’s mother, Miranda, raised her daughters under a strict rule: never go to Arcadia Falls and never speak of Maggie. Rhea breaks that rule out of financial necessity.

She rents out her parents’ house, adopts her former boss’s rose-breasted cockatoo, Doris, wins five hundred dollars on a scratch-off ticket, and drives to Georgia.

In Arcadia Falls, she meets Colonel Gooch and a local carpenter named Hunter Blakely. Gooch explains the unusual terms of the trust: the properties cannot be sold, and Rhea must scatter Maggie’s cremains at the town waterfall to claim them.

At the falls, Rhea slips on wet rock. Doris bites her finger, and her blood mixes with the water and the ashes.

The combination triggers Rhea’s dormant magic and pulls Maggie’s spirit into the cockatoo’s body. From then on, Maggie speaks telepathically inside Rhea’s mind while screeching and waddling like an ordinary bird on the outside.

Maggie explains that Rhea comes from a line of witches. Rhea discovers her own “knack” when she finds a tiny antique dictionary in Maggie’s safe-deposit box at the bank.

When Rhea flips the dictionary open at random, the words on the page answer whatever question she is holding in her head.

Local innkeepers Nick and Nathan encourage her to keep the town’s boiled peanut business alive and convert the attached video store into an independent bookstore. She names it Nuts for Books.

Rhea hires Hunter to build custom cherrywood shelves, and the two grow close. The attraction complicates quickly when Joyce Blakely, Hunter’s grandmother, announces at a Chamber of Commerce meeting that Rhea is a Kirkwood.

Hunter reveals that his mother died years earlier in a barn fire while trying to rebuild spells that Maggie had destroyed. Despite that history, Hunter sees Rhea’s optimism and the two reconcile.

During renovations, Rhea and Hunter run into a violent poltergeist in the back office. Chairs fly, doors slam, and objects move on their own.

Exploring the other inherited properties—a hardware store, a single-screen movie theater, and a packed antiques market—Rhea finds hidden rooms and a trapdoor beneath a bedroom rug.

Her dictionary keeps returning to one word: below. Maggie eventually admits she scrambled the town’s grimoires on purpose, not out of spite but to prevent a second flood like the one her daughter Miranda caused years before.

Rhea gathers local witches—Farrah MacGillicuddy, Joyce Blakely, Tina McGowan, Shelby McGowan, and Hunter—inside a salt circle to perform a ghost-soothing spell.

Maggie, still in the cockatoo’s body, retrieves the slipping spell paper so Rhea can finish the incantation. The poltergeist is revealed as Rhea’s great-uncle Abraham Kirkwood, who worked in the video store before he died.

Abraham tells Rhea the magic is hidden under the office, then ascends. The spell also frees Maggie from Doris, and the bird returns to her normal show-tune-loving self.

Rhea and Hunter lift the trapdoor and descend into a stone cellar. Inside mason jars and plastic bags are four intact Kirkwood grimoires, including Maggie’s.

Rather than keeping the magic, Rhea invites every witch family in town to her kitchen table and lets them copy the spells into new blank journals. Decades of feuds end in a single afternoon.

Two weeks later, on Halloween, Nuts for Books holds its grand opening with a ribbon cutting, a costume contest won by Nathan dressed as the Video Emporium, and steaming boiled peanuts.

Cait and Jemma arrive from Alabama to celebrate. Rhea and Hunter begin their life together, while the spirits of Maggie and Abraham watch on.

Quotes from Books & Bewitchment

“No matter how bad my day is, someone in a book has it worse and will still get a happily-ever-after eventually. Maybe that’s why I read so much. It gives me hope—and an escape.”

“There is no formal study. Everything is inherited. The rest of the world has no idea.”

“Because you don’t just love books—it’s like they love you. They want to help you. And when you’re in Arcadia Falls, that feeling will be magnified.”

“You got to put your head up and claim what’s yours. Fight for what you want. I can see the fire in you, but you’ve been smothering it your whole life, at least in relation to fighting for yourself.”

“The great thing about being a carpenter is that I can turn those hopes into reality.”

“Good people help good people. I don’t know what went wrong around here, but folks got real weird about magic a while back. Nobody’ll talk about it, but I will.”

“A bookshelf is basically a person’s heart on display—the words that made them who they are, that brought them comfort during dark times, that inspired them or bewitched them.”
