Court of Winter Summary: The Full Story (Spoilers Ahead)
Spoiler warning: This section covers the plot in full, including the ending.
The Solis Continent is a frozen northern realm held together by orem, a celestial magic that keeps soil fertile in sub-zero temperatures. Four fae races share the land, and the winged Solis fae rule through a strict court hierarchy of kings and territorial archons.
Fae who never develop wings or an affinity are labeled defectives and sent to agricultural labor.
Ilara Seary works field kitchens in Mervalee alongside her younger sister Cailis. Their parents and older brother Tormesh were executed by the Winter Court after Tormesh warned the royal council that the continent’s orem was failing. The village archon, Vorl, secretly chokes and beats Ilara, then uses his illusion affinity to hide the bruises.
Ilara’s private garden produces enormous crops despite the harsh gales, and she soon senses she is being watched. Crown Prince Norivun Deema Melustral Achul, Death Master of the continent, arrives in Mervalee and enters her field kitchen. He orders her headscarf removed, sees her pitch-black hair, and tells her she is coming with him.
During the two-day flight west, Norivun stops at Liss Lodge near High Liss. A drunken local morphs into an ice bear and attacks his own family, and Norivun kills him with his death affinity.
That night he sees through Vorl’s illusion and recognizes the archon’s abusive mark on Ilara’s neck.
At the castle of Solisarium, Norivun hides Ilara in his private wing inside the Exorbiant Chamber and casts an illusion to make her black hair appear silver. He shows her a dead courtyard garden and asks her to tend it before leaving on royal business for weeks.

Left with servants Balbus, Daiseeum, Haisley, and Patrice, Ilara clears the snow and touches the frozen soil.
Over a month, her touch revives the courtyard into a blossoming oasis brimming with orem. Norivun returns with his flirtatious brother Prince Nuwin and drops the illusion on her hair. He then reveals the truth: Ilara is no defective, and her affinity is the ability to create orem itself.
Ilara slaps him, furious that he executed her family while her brother carried warnings of the same crisis.
She uses her leverage to strike a fairy bargain. She will train her magic and restore the continent in exchange for a guard, freedom of movement, visits with Cailis, and a peaceful return home once the land is healed.
Norivun takes Ilara to dead fields in Harrivee for daily practice and brings her on travels to Barvilum, Kroravee, the Pentlebim market, and the luminous Ice Caves. In Barvilum, he creates a harbor illusion of dead Lochen raiders to satisfy the townspeople while quietly keeping peace with their leader, Drachu.
Lord Crimsonale, Archon of Osaravee, discovers Ilara’s existence and reports her to King Novakin. The king demands her presence at the royal winter ball, where he dismisses her murdered family as a minor matter and views her as a useful royal asset. Overwhelmed, Ilara flees the ballroom.
Nuwin guides her through hidden castle tunnels to the library and maze, and later she dances with him and with Lord Michas Crimsonale. Michas shares rumors that nobles are conspiring to invade the southern Nolus continent because of the crop crisis. On a balcony, Norivun replaces Michas’s coat with his own and apologizes for the executions, then kisses her.
Nuwin interrupts to announce the Rising Queen Trial, a competition for Norivun’s hundredth winter to select his betrothed. Three noble contenders with multiple rare affinities are presented: Lady Meegana Ockson, Lady Georgyanna Endalaver, and Lady Beatrice Leafton. Heartbroken, Ilara runs into the icy topiary maze.
Vorl corners her there and reveals he brought Cailis to the castle as leverage. He pins her against the ice wall and chokes her toward unconsciousness, and her dormant magic erupts in a tornado of fire and air that shatters Norivun’s illusion spell.
Norivun arrives in a rage, lifts Vorl, and begins drawing out his soul with death magic. Refusing to allow another killing, Ilara grabs the departing spirit mid-air and forces it back into Vorl’s body, restoring him to life. She collapses from magical exhaustion.
Ilara wakes in the Exorbiant Chamber surrounded by Norivun, Cailis, Nuwin, the guards, and head healer Murl. Murl confirms she carries at least four affinities: air, fire, orem creation, and soul restoration, placing her power near Norivun’s six.
King Novakin names her a Lady of the Court and enters her into the Rising Queen Trial, a competition her bargain cannot stop.
