Lightguard (Daughter of Sun) Summary

Spoilers ahead. This section covers the main events and the ending of the book.

Ashera has been protected for a thousand years by the Boundary, a wall of divine light raised by the sun goddess Helaera against her sister Arytalis and the shadow-wielding Nightrenders.

The Lightguards are the celibate monastic order that maintains it.

Corinne Anastos passes her final Test at the monastery and proves herself one of the strongest light mages in decades. High Priestess Mother Creita instead assigns her to Vytanos as bodyguard to Prince Aryel Serra, after a threatening message targets the prince.

Corinne finds the capital overwhelming and the prince worse.

Aryel is drunk, irreverent, and openly mocking of her vows. She also battles a private war: intrusive thoughts and a cruel inner voice insisting she is a fraud destined to become her father, a Lightguard defector who killed her mother.

She recites mantras to steady herself — Stay the course. Be the Light — and slowly builds friendships in the castle. Castle guards Danai Mykotas and Iliana Calais, and assistant librarian Nik Ekhana, become her circle.

Her view of Aryel shifts as well. She learns he plays the pianoforte with startling skill, studies agricultural policy to feed starving eastern villages, and absorbs physical and verbal abuse from his father, King Theo.

During an unofficial night outing in the city, two assassins ambush them. Corinne kills both, then suffers a severe panic attack. Aryel stays with her and tells her that a thought entering the mind does not make it true.

When Corinne reports the attack to Mother Creita, the High Priestess burns a scar onto her forearm as penance for straying. Corinne then receives an anonymous note: I know your secret, Corinne Anastos.

Corinne proposes that Lightguards help transport food to crisis-stricken farmlands, and the plan works. Her childhood friend Vera Bronan visits only to cut ties, claiming Corinne has abandoned her vows. Meanwhile, her bond with Aryel becomes a secret romance.

On Aryel’s twenty-eighth birthday, a third assassin breaches the castle and attacks him in his bedchambers. Corinne kills the intruder, and the court descends into turmoil. Mother Creita and the Lightguard leadership arrive in Vytanos claiming to reinforce security.

Mother Creita tells Corinne she is recalled to the monastery. Before she can leave, an explosion tears through the north wing. Lightguards set the palace alight in a bloody coup, assassinating King Theo and Queen Erina and seizing Vytanos.

Corinne rushes into the burning ruins for Aryel and uncovers the truth: the Lightguard leadership manufactured the Nightrender threat to take political control of Ashera. Captured and shackled, she is brought before Mother Creita.

Mother Creita reveals that Corinne’s daily ceremonial tea was a magic suppressant, used to stifle her innate power. She then orders Corinne to execute Aryel to prove her loyalty.

Corinne refuses. She breaks her conditioning and unlocks her hereditary fire magic, melting her shackles and burning her captors. She pulls Aryel free, and with Danai, Iliana, and Nik they fight their way out of the castle.

Councilor Toro, Danai’s father, gives them a secret map and tells them to flee Ashera entirely. He says a light mage named Rasi lives across the Boundary in the Shadowlands and can offer refuge.

Hunted as traitors, the five reach the Boundary near Balae. Using amplified fire magic and an ancient inverted creed, Corinne tears a physical rift in the wall of divine light.

She holds the portal open for Aryel and her friends, then leaps through as pursuing Lightguards strike. The book ends with the group landing in Zovalos, in the Shadowlands, surrounded by mounted Nightrenders led by a dark-haired woman marked with night sky patterns.

Quotes from Lightguard (Daughter of Sun)

“Light by Light and stone by stone / I am conduit alone / This I vow, to be Her hand / And never will I seek a throne”

“Just because a thought enters your mind doesn’t mean it’s true or real.”

“That’s part of Her Light too. You should run toward those who give you such peace, not push them away.”

“You make me want to try. You make me want to be a better person, Corinne.”

“I’m not going through without you.”

“Defector!” she spat. “You’re no Lightguard!” — “You’re right,” Corinne said… “I’m more than that.”
