Clare Mackintosh’s thriller It’s Not What You Think begins in a freezing December on Cedar Walk. Nadeeka Prasanna hears a train in the background of a call from her partner, Jamie Golding, and suspects he is lying about working late.

She rushes home and finds the house cordoned off. A man calling himself Detective Inspector Colin Burton tells her Jamie has been stabbed to death on the living room floor.

When Nadeeka later visits the police station to collect her phone, DCI Lauren Caldwell says the force has no record of the murder.

The officers who first responded were fake, and the scene had been sanitized by a cleaning company hired with a cloned credit card.

Nadeeka searches Jamie’s workplace and finds the initials “ND” in his desk diary. At first she suspects a woman named Nicole Davis, but the letters point to New Dawn, a far-right group.

Police find Jamie’s fingerprints on a lighter fluid bottle used in an arson attack on a Pakistani-owned convenience store.

Library records show he reserved material such as Mein Kampf.

After a dog-walker discovers Jamie’s body buried in the woods, the investigation deepens. A retrospective section reveals Jamie was not a genuine extremist.

He had been isolated and groomed by colleagues Carrie Finder, Alan Ellis, and Chris Morley. They ordered him to burn down the shop to prove loyalty.

Jamie secretly called the shopkeeper to wake him, pushed £300 through the door afterward, and began recording New Dawn meetings with a microphone sewn into his balaclava.

When Carrie, Alan, and Chris found his notes at home, Chris stabbed him to death.

In the present, the real police arrest Damian and Peter Fletcher, who confess to burying Jamie’s body.

The team also finds that New Dawn has bought citric acid, bleach, and nails to build a large explosive device.

The key twist in this It’s Not What You Think plot is that Lauren’s fiancé and police colleague, DS Fraser Hogan, is the leader of the local New Dawn chapter.

He has been feeding information to the group and moving up the planned attack.

Fraser plants devices at the Civic Centre, where about 200 children are rehearsing a multi-faith nativity.

Lauren orders an evacuation, but her daughter Maya hides behind a stage panel.

Fraser takes teacher Miss Key hostage on the roof. Lauren talks him into releasing her and arrests him herself.

Eighteen months later, Fraser, Carrie, Alan, Chris, and Mike Bishop are convicted. Fraser receives a life sentence with a minimum of thirty-five years.

Nadeeka scatters Jamie’s ashes in peaceful places and builds support with Kath Hadley and Jamie’s parents.

In prison, Fraser remains unrepentant and recruits younger inmates into the movement.
