The Shadow of the Gods Summary: Full Story
(Spoilers Ahead)
Three hundred years after the gods died in the Guðfalla, Vigrið is a frozen land built from their bones.
The Shadow of the Gods follows three point-of-view characters whose paths begin far apart and slowly move toward the same northern threat.
John Gwynne uses Orka, Varg, and Elvar to show how ordinary warriors and Tainted bloodlines interact with dead gods’ remnants.
Orka lives quietly in the mountains with her husband Thorkel and son Breca. After neighbors are slaughtered and their child taken, Orka and Thorkel begin tracking the kidnappers, but Thorkel is killed in a raid and Breca is stolen by dragon-born men.
Orka digs out her old brynja and weapons and swears an oath of blood-vengeance. She kills three kidnappers, interrogates a fourth, and learns the raid is led by a giant dragon-born named Drekr.
She travels to Fellur, wounds Jarl SigrĂşn, and kills the thrall Vafri. She frees Virk’s sons, Mord and Lif, and heads north to Darl.
In Darl, she captures the rat-kin spy Skefil, learns Drekr is taking Tainted children to the Grimholt Pass, and executes him. Guðvarr pursues them, but Orka burns a bridge to slow him.
At the Grimholt, frost-spiders attack, and Skalk captures Orka, Mord, and Lif. Guðvarr stabs Mord, and Orka’s hidden wolf-blood awakens, triggering a berserk rampage.
Aided by Spert and the tennĂşr Vesli, she slaughters the guards. The Bloodsworn arrive at the courtyard as Orka stands covered in blood, setting up a future alliance.
Varg is an escaped thrall who killed his master Kolskegg in a red-mist rage after learning his sister Frøya died in captivity. He goes to Liga to find a Seiðr-witch named Vol, but the Bloodsworn control access to her.
He challenges Einar Half-Troll to a fistfight, loses but impresses the crew, and joins the Bloodsworn. Under Røkia’s training, he learns shield-wall combat.
When Prince Jaromir’s druzhina ambush the Bloodsworn at the docks, Varg kills an attacker in his first battle. Queen Helka arrives and hires the Bloodsworn to investigate deaths in the north.

In the wilderness they find twenty-four of Helka’s drengrs skinned and hanged. They track the killers to an excavation site guarded by skraelings and a bull-troll.
During the battle, Drekr and a red-eyed dragon-born warrior with a bone sword appear. Varg enters a red mist and kills the dragon-born, but is wounded.
He wakes in a catacomb and learns the entire Bloodsworn crew is Tainted, and that he is Úlfhéðnar, wolf-kin. Skalk betrays them, kills Torvik, steals the bone sword and the Raudskinna, and kidnaps Vol.
Varg takes the Bloodsworn oath from Glornir, receives a silver arm ring, and vows to hunt Skalk and rescue Vol.
Elvar sails with the Battle-Grim to capture a Tainted bear-born man, Berak Bjornasson. After the capture, a sea serpent attacks the ship and throws Berak’s son Bjarn into the sea; Elvar dives in to save him.
Agnar sells Berak to Jarl Störr in Snakavik. Störr demands Elvar return home and marry Queen Helka’s son Hakon, but she refuses.
After the Raven-Feeders ambush the Battle-Grim, kill Thrud, and kidnap Bjarn, Uspa reveals she memorized the path to Oskutreð. The warband performs a blood oath and heads north.
They cross the IsbrĂşn Bridge and the Gallows Wood, reach Oskutreð’s blackened stump, and meet the Froa-spirit Vörn. Ilska arrives with captured Tainted children, including Bjarn.
Agnar kills Ilska’s brother Skrið in a duel, but BiĂłrr betrays the Battle-Grim, stabs Agnar to death, and reveals he is a Tainted rat-kin working for Ilska.
Ilska forces the Tainted children to bleed on the stump’s bolted doors.
The dragon-god Lik-Rifa is released from her prison, kills two winged daughters of Orna and Ulfrir, and transforms into a pale woman with red-coaled eyes.
Lik-Rifa vows to reclaim Nastrandir and flies south. Elvar and Grend collapse in the ash, realizing they have unleashed an ancient evil.
