Read the Full Chapter-by-Chapter Breakdown of the Book
In Jo Nesbo’s Wolf Hour, the 2016 timeline opens with the shooting of gun trafficker Marco Dante in the Jordan projects.
Detective Bob Oz is assigned to the case despite being unstable and sidelined because of his daughter Frankie’s accidental death. Bob is separated from his wife Alice and works on the fringes of the Homicide Unit.
Thirty years earlier, in 1986, Mike Lunde took his wife Monica, son Sam, and disabled daughter Anna to a McDonald’s on East Lake Street.
Cartel hitman Tomás Gomez, known as Lobo, shot up the restaurant and killed Mike’s family. Detective Olav Hanson accepted bribes from gang leader Wes Villefort and altered evidence so Lobo walked free.
Mike Lunde spent three decades planning revenge. He lured Gomez to his taxidermy studio, drugged him with Rohypnol, and chained him in a remote Cedar Creek cabin.
After torturing Gomez for names, Lunde flayed his face and hands and used the skin as a mask and gloves.
Wearing Gomez’s face, Lunde shoots Marco Dante, kills NRA spokesperson Cody Karlstad through a windshield, and poisons Wes Villefort with tetrodotoxin at the Rialto theater.
He also beheads corrupt detective Olav Hanson and displays the body on a metal Pegasus sculpture at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.
Bob Oz bonds with Lunde at the taxidermy shop without realizing he is the killer. He finds the 1986 police report and connects Lunde to the McDonald’s massacre.
Detective Kay Myers discovers the Cedar Creek cabin and the flayed, frozen body of the real Tomás Gomez.
Lunde takes Mayor Kevin Patterson’s wife and children hostage at Town Taxidermy. Bob enters unarmed, negotiates the family’s release, and stays with Lunde.
Lunde asks Bob to help him pull the trigger; Bob refuses, and Lunde kills himself as SWAT forces enter.
The epilogue resolves the remaining threads.
Marco Dante dies when a rigged grenade trap under his car activates. Bob leaves the police, marries bartender Liza Hummels, and raises a child with her in Chanhassen.
