Full Story Summary: The Path to Stormseat

SPOILER WARNING: This section details the entire plot, including the ending.

Highprince Dalinar Kholin remains haunted by visions of the Almighty during highstorms. The command is always the same: “Unite them.”

He intensifies his political campaign, using his son Adolin in a series of duels to win the Shards of rival highprinces, aiming to corner the traitorous Torol Sadeas.

Shallan Davar travels to the Shattered Plains as Jasnah Kholin’s ward. Her ship is attacked by assassins, and Jasnah is presumed killed.

Stranded, Shallan begins a dangerous journey overland, using her emerging Lightweaving abilities to survive. Her spren, Pattern, feeds on the truths she speaks, granting her the power to create illusions.

She adopts the persona of “Veil” to infiltrate the Ghostbloods, a secretive organization her father was involved with.

Kaladin Stormblessed commands Bridge Four as bodyguards to the Kholin family. He continues to train in secret with his Windrunner abilities, lashing objects and flying with Sylphrena, his honorspren.

His growing trust is shattered when Brightlord Amaram arrives at the camps. Amaram is the man who enslaved Kaladin and murdered his squad, yet Dalinar welcomes him as a man of honor.

Kaladin’s hatred for lighteyes deepens, straining his bond with Syl.

The Assassin in White, Szeth, attacks Dalinar. Kaladin leaps into the fight and drives Szeth off, revealing his Radiant powers to the court. Instead of gratitude, Kaladin is met with fear and suspicion.

Shallan eventually reaches the Shattered Plains and joins the Kholin household. She continues her Ghostblood infiltration, discovering Amaram is connected to them and to a vast conspiracy surrounding the Voidbringers.

Adolin’s dueling campaign culminates in a trap. He faces four Shardbearers alone. Kaladin, against orders, jumps unarmed into the arena to defend him.

He is arrested for his bravery, but the act solidifies his legend.

Moash, a member of Bridge Four, gives Kaladin a gift: a set of Shards. He also reveals a plot to assassinate King Elhokar, whom he holds responsible for his family’s death. Kaladin is given an opportunity to step aside and let it happen.

Meanwhile, on the Plains, the Parshendi general Eshonai leads her people in adopting stormform, a powerful and corrupting bond that summons the Everstorm, an apocalyptic highstorm that brings the Voidbringers.

During a scouting expedition, a bridge is sabotaged. Shallan and Kaladin fall into the deep chasms.

Trapped, they navigate the labyrinthine depths. Kaladin’s powers are drained because Syl has left him, disgusted by his complicity in the king’s assassination plot.

They are attacked by a colossal chasmfiend. Kaladin’s skills are useless without Stormlight. Shallan is forced to summon her hidden Shardblade for him to use, finally admitting a terrible truth: she killed her father with it.

Kaladin kills the creature. As a highstorm floods the chasm, Shallan makes a startling discovery. Looking at a drawing she made of the Shattered Plains, she realizes the entire landscape is a giant, symmetrical pattern—a cymatic representation of the ancient city of Stormseat.

The path to the lost city of Urithiru lies directly at the center.

They escape the chasm. Kaladin finds Syl has returned after he swears the Third Ideal of the Windrunners: “I will protect even those I hate, so long as it is right.” He rushes to stop the assassination, confronting Moash on the palace balcony just as Szeth arrives again.

Kaladin fights Szeth in a clash of Stormlight, slicing through the sky. Dalinar, hearing Shallan’s revelation, activates an ancient portal on the Plains, teleporting the entire Alethi army to Urithiru just as the Everstorm is unleashed.

The storm transforms the parshmen globally into Voidbringers. Szeth, defeated, falls from the sky. A new chapter for humanity begins from the ancient tower city.
