Warning: Major spoilers ahead.

Twelve years before the main events, Tabitha Crowther was abducted by Horned Gods during an ambush. Her son Graysen survived the crash that blinded his infant sister Ferne. Their father Varen and aunt Valarie have hunted for Tabitha ever since.

Byron Wychthorn, head of Great House Wychthorn, was implicated in Tabitha’s disappearance. The feud between the two Houses never healed.

Five years before the story opens, the Horned God Master Sirro granted House Crowther the Alverac. This ancient blood contract gives Graysen legal ownership of Nelle Wychthorn upon her twentieth birthday.

In the present, Danne Pellan discovers Nelle’s hidden wyrm and tries to blackmail and assault her. Nelle kills him in self-defense. Her unleashed wyrmfire kills several Crowther relatives and soldiers, including Collens, Hollis, Gretchen, and Liam.

Graysen captures Nelle and claims responsibility for Danne’s death under the Alverac to protect her secret. He cinches Zrenyth’s cord around her neck, cutting her off from her fire.

At Crowther Keep, Valarie and Varen demand Nelle be thrown into the pitch-black dungeons to torture Byron into surrendering Brangwene’s Hjarte. Graysen refuses. “She’s mine… I decide what happens with her.”

He takes Nelle up a spiral staircase to his private tower quarters at the top of the Keep. Byron Wychthorn arrives demanding his daughter, but Varen and Valarie deny him entry.

Graysen lies to Byron that Nelle is locked in the dark dungeon. He exploits Byron’s guilt over having locked Nelle in the Tithe Prison as a child.

Graysen then attends a summit at Master Sirro’s glass-and-bone penthouse in Ascendria. Sirro reveals that a tithe convoy carrying Red was hijacked by the Children of the Harbinger—though Jett Crowther secretly rescued Red himself.

Sirro orders Graysen to find a winged secret-dealer named Yezekael in the Hemmlok Forest. He also hints at his own predatory interest in Nelle.

Graysen travels to Hemmlok with his friend Mela Văduva. In Yezekael’s abandoned nest, he finds a diamond necklace that triggers a memory. Valarie possessed Tabitha’s pearl necklace, suggesting Tabitha met a high-ranking House figure before her capture.

Graysen also tells Mela that her lost lover Elyse is still alive, held in Pellan laboratories.

Back at the Keep, Nelle falls gravely ill. Zrenyth’s collar cuts her off from natural light, forcing her wyrm into hibernation. Ferne summons Graysen back.

Using his connection to the tower’s wild magic, Graysen shifts the stone walls outward. Open arched balconies flood the tower with sunlight, saving Nelle’s life. Caidan Crowther brings Nelle’s ghostly wraith-wolf Sage to live in the tower.

Through Penn, the quiet mortal housekeeper, Nelle learns about Tabitha’s legacy. Tabitha reformed House Crowther, building modern apartments for all staff and insisting on equality.

Penn also reveals that the tower’s wild magic locks out everyone except Graysen, Penn, and Nelle. Graysen caged Nelle in the tower to protect her from his ruthless aunt and brothers.

Nelle negotiates: she will keep her temper under control and stay with Sage in exchange for leaving the tower to explore the Keep. Graysen agrees.

He guides her through the staff quarters, the Great Hall, the white-rose gardens, and the multi-level library. There, Nelle searches for ways to remove Zrenyth’s collar and finds references to Zrenyth’s Mites—microscopic organisms that consume divine metal.

The hyperaware bond between Wyrm and Wyrm Tamer deepens into romantic and physical tension. On the tower staircase, Graysen wipes away Nelle’s tears as she swears to survive him and the Alverac.

Jett Crowther triggers a chaotic beast called a brunnie inside the Keep as a distraction. Nelle slips into the library and pulls a trigger-book, swinging open a hidden passage to the escape tunnel.

Jett confronts her, mocking her attempts and revealing the family left the library empty on purpose to monitor her. Nelle discovers that Zrenyth’s boundary prevents her from leaving the estate grounds.

Her twentieth birthday is only two weeks away—when the Alverac will permanently bind her soul to Graysen’s absolute command. Nelle collapses under the weight of it.

Broken by hopelessness, she returns to Graysen’s quarters. He finds her in tears. In an emotionally charged climax, Nelle climbs onto his birdcage bed and uses physical intimacy to persuade him to untie the collar and let her go.

Graysen sees through her desperate plan and pulls back. He admits he knows she will destroy House Crowther to save herself. He accepts her choice and collapses in exhaustion beside her.

The next morning, Nelle decides on a new course. She agrees to help Graysen find Yezekael by guiding him to Ascendria.

They enter the garage and board his vintage Mustang, flanked by a four-vehicle convoy of armed Escalades. As they cross the drawbridge, Nelle puts on gold-rimmed aviator sunglasses.

She watches the rookery of the Birds of Prey—ghostly winged foreseers of the murdered. Listening to music with gritty bass, she looks at Graysen’s boyish, unguarded smile.

Refusing to remain a victim, Nelle reaches a fierce internal realization: “I didn’t need anyone else to save me. I was going to save myself.”

The book ends on this cliffhanger as the convoy speeds toward Ascendria.
