In September 1989, Arthur Oakes visits his mother at Black Cricket prison. He lends a hoodie to Tana Nighswander.
That act exposes Arthur’s job as head student librarian of the Rackham College Special Collection. Tana’s sister Jayne and her boyfriend Ronnie Volpe blackmail Arthur into stealing rare first editions.
Arthur tells his close friends: Colin Wren, twins Van and Donna McBride, Allie Shiner, and Gwen Underfoot.
At Colin’s estate, The Briars, they discover Division 19 military research films made by Colin’s grandfather Llewellyn Wren. The films show a summoned ghost named Elwood Hondo.
After a Halloween assault, the friends use a journal bound in the skin of Enoch Crane to summon King Sorrow, an ancient dragon from the Long Dark.
The dragon demands an annual Easter sacrifice. The ritual erases one day from their memories. The group later calls that missing day Scatterday.
On Easter 1990, King Sorrow crushes Jayne and Ronnie in Reno, Nevada. The friends stage a fake break-in at the Rackham library to cover Arthur’s thefts. Arthur leaves for Oxford and breaks up with Gwen out of guilt.
In 1995, Allie targets white supremacist cult leader Horation Matthews. She boards a transatlantic flight with Matthews. King Sorrow attacks the plane over the North Atlantic, decapitates Matthews, and forces an emergency landing in Greenland.
In 2000, private military contractor Thermopylae Security kidnaps Van and Donna. Van leaps to his death to save Donna from torture. Donna summons King Sorrow to destroy the black site on Cherokee Island. Colin later negotiates a covert target list with the contractor.
In 2001, Donna targets Francine Trout for the childhood murder of Cady Lewis. The dragon explodes Black Cricket prison, killing hundreds of inmates and guards. Gwen is severely injured during a rescue attempt.
In 2006, Arthur and Colin find the Sword of Strange Hangings in Wales. Colin stabs Arthur and leaves his body in a stone coffin.
In 2016, Gwen, Allie, Robin Fellows, and Tana learn of Colin’s betrayal. They steal the martyr’s robe and saint’s blood. On Easter morning, Donna consumes dragon tears to act as bait.
Gwen pins the dragon’s tail with Arthur’s soul-sword. The dragon, driven by hunger, devours its own tail and swallows itself entirely. Gwen dies but is revived.
Allie and Tana marry. By 2022, Gwen and Robin see more dragons appearing across the globe.
