TL;DR: The Core Arc at a Glance
Anathema by Keri Lake is a dark gothic romantasy set in two realms: the mortal Mortasia and the immortal Aethyria.
At the center is Maevyth, an orphan whose blood awakens an ancient power after she cuts herself on a bone at the edge of the Eating Woods.
When her sister is banished into that same forest, Maevyth follows and crosses a magical barrier into Aethyria. There she is rescued by Zevander, an assassin cursed with a black flame that refuses to harm her.
Together they uncover dangerous political secrets, train her growing power, and form a forbidden bond.
The plot builds toward a violent confrontation at a royal ceremony, then a forced return to Mortasia and a cliffhanger ending that changes what Maevyth thought she knew about her family.

Anathema Summary: The Deep Dive
Spoiler warning: This section recounts the full plot, including the ending.
The world of Anathema is split into Mortasia and Aethyria.
Mortasia is a mortal land ruled by fear and religious control in Foxglove Parish, where heretics are banished naked into the Eating Woods to be devoured.
Aethyria is a realm of immortal blood mages, where access to a rare mineral called vivicantem divides the wealthy highbloods from the starving spindlings and decaying nilivir. A magical barrier called the Umbravale separates the two worlds.
The story begins with a prologue set two hundred eleven years earlier. Lady Rydainn gives her infant son Zevander to the rogue mage Cadavros, who curses the child with the black flame sablyfyre.
Zevander is later enslaved and tortured by General Loyce before becoming an elite assassin for King Sagaerin. He spends his years searching for six illegal blood stones to complete a scepter that might banish his curse.
In the present day, Maevyth is a nineteen-year-old orphan living with her cruel step-grandmother Agatha. After her adoptive father is killed, Agatha sells Maevyth to a wealthy and abusive businessman named Mr. Moros.
While trying to escape, Maevyth cuts her arm on a sharp bone at the forest archway. She falls into a fever, dies for eight minutes, and wakes with a silver-feather scar and a silver fleck in her left eye.
She also digs up a scaled egg from her raven’s grave, and it hatches into a dragon-like Corvugon she names Raivox.
When her older step-sister Aleysia is condemned to banishment, Maevyth defends her and accidentally summons a pile of human bones from her hands. The crowd brands her a death witch, and she flees into the Eating Woods after Aleysia.
In the forest, she is attacked by wood-fairies called wickens and witnesses a mutated stag-beast version of Cadavros devour Mr. Moros. Guided by the forest, Maevyth steps through the Umbravale into Aethyria, where corrupt Imperial Guards capture her.
Zevander, who crossed into Aethyria seeking a final bloodstone, fails to kill Maevyth because his sablyfyre refuses to harm her.
When he learns of her capture, he uses his massive scorpion prodozja to slaughter her captors and brings her to Eidolon Castle.
There, the rogue high mage Dolion identifies Maevyth as the last of the Corvikae, an ancient mortal race tied to the death goddess Morsana.
Over two weeks, Maevyth trains in defensive glyphs and discovers she can siphon Zevander’s black flame. Their connection grows intense and magnetic.
Meanwhile, Zevander’s sister Rykaia smuggles Maevyth to Princess Calisza’s Becoming Ceremony in Costelwick. At the ceremony, Maevyth reveals that Mr. Moros had discovered a massive vein of vivicantem under the Lyverian mountains.
Zevander interrogates a suspicious mage named Anatolis, who confirms that the Magestroli lied about Cadavros’s death and that Magelord Akmyrios orchestrated Maevyth’s capture. A silence spell liquefies Anatolis’s organs before he can reveal more. At the same time, starving Nilivir launch a violent uprising at the palace gates.
During the chaos, Melantha, Akmyrios’s apprentice and the secret flammellian who tortured Rykaia, abducts Maevyth. Akmyrios attempts to turn Maevyth’s blood to stone using sablyfyre.
In her mind’s caligorya, the goddess Morsana tells Maevyth to command the flame. Maevyth wakes, incinerates Akmyrios, and uses a bone whip to kill the other mages.
Melantha then tricks Maevyth into believing Aleysia is alive on the other side of the Umbravale, pushing her back into Mortasia. Zevander rescues Rykaia, sends his allies to Calyxar, and crosses the Umbravale after Maevyth. In Mortasia, Cadavros seizes Zevander’s mind through an Abyssal binding, trapping him in a hallucination of his abuser General Loyce.
Maevyth finds the mutated Elowen in the woods. Elowen attacks her, and Maevyth uses a new death-inducing glyph to turn Elowen to dust. Maevyth then returns to Zevander and presses her palms to his, drawing him out of the nightmare by absorbing his fever.
After Zevander awakens, they share an intimate encounter and decide to flee together to Calyxar. But as Maevyth searches for food, she discovers a hidden trapdoor in the cabin floor.
She opens it and finds her sister Aleysia alive and hidden in the crawl space.
