TL;DR: The Shadow Queen’s Bargain

Neve wakes in the Shadowlands, a prison for ancient gods.

She is found by Solmir, a fallen king. He needs her to help destroy the other Kings before they escape their collapsing world.

Solmir binds her magic to his body to stop it from rotting her soul. Together, they hunt and kill the Old Ones to gain enough power to open a portal.

On the surface, Red works to bring Neve back. She becomes the vessel for the Wilderwood’s light.

The story ends with the two sisters colliding in a final magical confrontation. Their powers destroy their souls, but this act permanently shatters the cycle of gods and monsters.

For the Throne Summary: A Descent Into Bone and Ash

Spoiler Warning: This section details the entire plot, including the ending.

The story begins with Neve Valedren waking in a smoked glass coffin.

Her veins are black with shadow magic. She is in the Shadowlands, a colorless underworld of upside-down trees and bone-filled mountains. Solmir, formerly disguised as her betrothed Arick, finds her.

He explains that the world is breaking apart. The Five Kings, trapped gods, want to escape. Solmir plans to destroy them for good.

Hannah Whitten establishes the immediate danger: using magic here causes physical rot. To prevent this, Solmir binds Neve’s magic to himself.

He becomes her physical vessel through constant skin-to-skin contact. They seek out the Seamstress, a half-spider creature.

She tells them they must open the Heart Tree in an inverted castle. This requires the magic of two Old Ones. The Seamstress sacrifices herself to give Solmir her power.

On the surface, Red and Eammon search for a rescue plan. Red has bloody dreams of the Heart Tree. In Valleyda, Raffe hides Neve’s absence. He deals with the arrival of Okada Kayu, a princess from Niohni. After finding a letter from Kiri, they sail for the Rylt. Kayu funds the voyage.

Back in the Shadowlands, Neve and Solmir face Calryes, Solmir’s father. He tortures Solmir. Neve escapes and kills the World Serpent with a god-bone dagger. She absorbs its immense magic.

On the surface, Red tries to force open a gateway. She nearly turns into a tree but is left with a golden key.

Neve and Solmir next find the Oracle. The Oracle forces Neve to confront painful truths about her selfishness. Solmir kills the Oracle and takes its power. They escape a collapsing mountain.

They cross dangerous marshes and call a Bone Ship to sail the Endless Sea. On the ship, Solmir confesses his love for Neve. He admits he abandoned his plan to sacrifice her.

A dying Leviathan captures them. It asks Neve to kill it so the Kings cannot claim its power. She stabs it, absorbing the magic. They are pulled to the Sanctum, where the remaining Kings wait.

On the surface, Raffe learns Kayu was a spy for the Order. However, she chose to protect them out of love. Kiri attacks Red at the Rylt Temple. Eammon kills Kiri to save his wife.

In the Sanctum, Neve refuses Valchior’s offer of immortality. She breaks off her own finger to create a god-bone weapon. She stabs him. Solmir releases the Kings’ souls, but they overwhelm him.

He begins turning into a monster. To save him, Neve pulls all the Kings’ souls into her own body through a kiss.

Red becomes the sole vessel of the Wilderwood’s light. When Neve emerges from the portal wreathed in shadow, their powers collide. They die, shattering their souls.

This permanently releases magic back to the world. They wake up in the snow, fully human and alive.

Arick is also resurrected with no memories. Neve abdicates her throne.

A year later, she reunites with Solmir in Alpera.
