The Incandescent Summary: The Deep Dive
Spoilers ahead. This section recounts the full plot, including the ending.
Dr. Sapphire Walden is thirty-eight, holds a doctorate in thaumaturgy, and once researched higher demons at an American university. She now spends her days writing risk assessments for teenagers who can set fires with a gesture.
Chetwood’s magic divides into three disciplines. Evocation is spoken and gestural spellcasting powered by physical strength, Instantiation enchants objects and builds lasting wards, and Invocation summons, contracts, and banishes demons.
Outside the classroom, the Order of Marshals polices magical safety. They wear rune-engraved armguards and carry enchanted shortswords. Chetwood also houses “sorcerers,” teenagers with wild untrained talent who attract demonic activity.
Chief Marshal Laura Kenning arrives in the autumn term with a concern. She flags Nicola Conway, a brilliant seventeen-year-old ward of the school whose family died in a demonic incursion a decade earlier.
Walden defends her student. During a double Invocation practical, she deliberately alters a laboratory ward as a safety test. Her four Upper Sixth students spot the change, but Mathias Wick panics during the summoning.
His uncontrolled surge of power draws Old Faithful, an eleventh-order demon that has lurked in Chetwood’s shadow since the seventeenth century. It pushes against the summoning array while Walden and Kenning hold it back.
Nikki ends the attack with a quick banishment cantrip copied from Walden’s risk assessment sheet. Afterward, Old Faithful whispers to the students, and it tells Nikki it is the demon that killed her family.
Nikki steals Walden’s copy of Nielle’s Arrays and persuades Mathias to help her attempt a triple-array summoning in the tower of School House. Aneeta Shah discovers the plan and alerts Walden.
Before Walden can intervene, Old Faithful tears through the wards and triggers a critical incursion centred on School House. Ezekiel Nwosu evacuates most of the foster children, but Nikki and Mathias stay trapped in the tower.
Kenning urges Walden to wait for reinforcements. Walden refuses, and Will Daubery charges into the violet fog ahead of them, forcing Kenning to follow.
Inside a distorted version of School House, Kenning kills a seventh-order archdemon with her shortsword and rescues an injured Will. Walden levitates him to safety and continues alone.
She breaks through Old Faithful’s barrier and finds Nikki and Mathias inside a black void formed by their collapsed array. Walden steps in, uses her authority as Director of Magic, and forces the demon back.
To get both students out alive, Walden strikes a binding blood pact. She will remain behind to fight Old Faithful to the death in exchange for the children’s release.
Old Faithful then manifests as Charlie Green, a lanky teenage boy who was Saffy’s classmate and first love, and who died in a 2003 incursion when the Marshals collapsed the portal on him.
Outmatched, Walden unbinds Phoenix, a tenth-order higher demon she captured during her doctoral research and kept leashed inside spellwork tattooed across her right arm. Merging academic theory with Phoenix’s power, she fights back.
Kenning re-enters the fight and together they overpower the entity. Kenning drives her silver sword through Charlie’s corpse, destroying Old Faithful and ending a twenty-year ghost story.
Suspicious of Phoenix, Kenning holds Walden at swordpoint until Walden swears a binding oath placing her fate in Kenning’s hands should the demon ever break loose.
The Board of Governors demands accountability. Kenning takes the official blame to protect Walden, Nikki, and Mathias, and resigns her post to return to front-line duty in London.
The Governors replace her with Mark Daubery, Will’s uncle and a charming former government advisor. He flirts with Walden, joins her on planar patrols, and begins a brief romantic liaison with her.
Over the following terms, small anomalies accumulate. Imps possess vape detectors, photocopiers, and radiators. A wild incursion erupts in Covent Garden during a Christmas trip to London.
In spring, a Year Nine Evocation practical turns violent when a student named Noor, possessed by a third-order demon, casts an impossibly powerful sheet of green flame at a classmate. Walden performs an emergency exorcism in the lab.
Realising that middle-order demons are entering the school without triggering warnings, Walden and site manager Todd Cartwright hunt for structural flaws in the wards.
She uncovers the truth. Mark Daubery has been sabotaging Chetwood’s protections, using a cursed umbrella and tampering with the Victorian thaumic engines to leak wild magic and force Walden to unleash Phoenix.
He has also bound himself to Charlie Green’s corpse and the engine array using dark instantiation. By summer, the sabotaged engines collapse and threaten to drag the entire campus into the demonic plane.
Phoenix takes over Walden’s senses to defend its territory, burning the school grounds. Kenning returns to Chetwood to stop the disaster.
Walden realises the demon cannot be contained while bound to her body. She regains control long enough to demand that Kenning cut off her right arm at the elbow with the enchanted silver sword.
Kenning strikes. The severed arm frees Phoenix, which chooses to align itself with Chetwood as an apex territorial predator, stabilising the school’s boundaries and driving other demons away permanently.
Mark Daubery’s scheme collapses, and he is left neutralised and under Marshal investigation. In the epilogue, Saffy recovers in an NHS hospital and learns to write left-handed.
Chief Ramamurthy confirms every student survived. Nikki passes her A-levels with top marks and prepares for Oxford alongside Will, Mathias, and Aneeta.
Having released the guilt of 2003 and her rigid administrative persona, Saffy resigns as Director of Magic. She reconciles with Laura Kenning, and the two plan a new life together in London.
